Beto is dumb by going hard on this because assault rifles aren't the biggest firearm problem. It's so totally Centrist Liberal.

75% of American adults oppose a handgun sales ban. It's tough to put that out there when it is so unpopular. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/meet-the-press/support-free-trade-reaches-new-high-nbc-wsj-poll-n1043601

It's the most acceptable position to take, because you'll never ban guns entirely. But it's a lot harder for gun advocates to argue that they NEED an AR-15 for any purpose whatsoever, and they've definitely been involved in multiple mass killings.

It's the perfect set up for the GOP to go after Democrats though:   "They do want to take your guns".  Any waffling there may have been with conservatives and gun owners about voting for Trump, as repugnent as he is, will all fade away if the Democrats run on a confiscation platform. Do they not remember what happened in 1994?

This time around, probably. The winds are definitely headed that way though and it's not a bad idea to start "priming the well" for its eventual majority support. We just need a few dozen more dead school children and the country will come around.

1994 isn't 2019. Democrats care too much about shit that happened years ago, running away from their shadow of the 1980s. Dems used the NRA as a punching bag and kicked ass in 2018; it's no longer something they care about because the gun control movement has grown so much and is significantly more well-funded.

Conservatives aren't voting for Democrats. Democrats care too much about trying to get a sliver of the other guys and causing a larger percentage of Dems to stay home.

Guns aren’t a big enough issue to sink a candidate. Even if it was, gun lovers use the same attacks against Dems regardless of their stance on the issue. Gun people act like all Dems support confiscation.

This. It's the same with the "socialism" BS with Warren and Sanders as potential nominees, as Buttigieg said, no matter how center or left they are, the GOP will be calling them all socialists.

Jesus Christ.

They’re right though, because as we all know, Trump would never stoop to that level. Castro should be ashamed of himself.

And Biden is naive enough to feel above that sort of thing when Trump is off on the side forgetting he has a teenage son.

I mean, I hate that Castro had to go to a GOP talking point for an attack, but at the same time, people need to stop coddling Biden.

He just said that Biden didn't remember something he said 2 minutes ago. I think anyone in a debate would have pointed that out.

Also when Buttjudge said we should all be nice and civil I'm pretty sure Castro was the one who said if you can't take it now you're not going to be able to handle it when the GOP does it.

So I don't think he's using GOP talking points, he's just participating in a debate.

I find that poll a little odd. I didn't watch this debate but based on the Internet reaction I thought Warren had an unproductive debate?

This debate was basically a carbon copy of the first two debates. She was still good but mainly because she's still saying the same good things.

I can see Bernie losing his supporters to her very easily. He comes off as almost reprimanding his audience instead of trying to win them over. More and more, I can see that Berniebros actually are a reflection of him.

People who like political porn and theater have those reactions (as do we), but I don't think many people watch the debates thinking like this. She has good ideas that people like and is passionate; there was no reason for people to feel worse about her, you know?

I don't necessarily know if it'll translate in the polls (Bernie took fire from multiple candidates but did a pretty decent job holding his own), but I think that's why political commentators should focus less on how a candidate "did" and just what they said.
