I'm pretty burnt out on pixel art games, but at least this one has some style to it. It leans more toward the early Playstation era of 2d graphics as opposed to 8 and 16-bit. I might give it a try one of these days.

Speaking of Metroidvanias, Dead Cells is really fun and really great.

 

But fuck, does it get frustrating as all hell at 2 Boss Cells, never mind whatever the fuck 5 is gonna do.

I should play Dead Cells, I just know I'll suck at it. 

 

This also looks pretty cool and is now on my radar. Hopefully I'll actually play it after I buy it unlike Dead Cells.

So I played the demo last night and really enjoyed it. I ended up playing through it three times total and keep thinking about it. 

 

The combat and controls in general are really good and fluid and it most certainly doesn't suffer from that "beautiful 2D indie game with gameplay as an afterthought" syndrome. It very much reminded me of Demon's Crest back on the SNES mixed with a Castlevania somewhere between CIII and Symphony of the Night with more fleshed-out combat and the obvious Dark Souls-isms. 

 

OST is very, very good and atmospheric, animations and art in general are incredibly good in motion and the level and encounter designs are also good. A good amount of spikes, ladders, fireballs type of environmental hazards mixed in with combat.

This is why more games should have demos available. I was only mildly interested in the game. Not a huge fan of pixel art, TBH. Played the demo. Now I want to keep playing. I'll still probably wait for impressions to be certain the quality remains consistent throughout and to see how long the game is, but I'll probably buy it soon after release.

Darn kids these days complaining about pixel art...ungrateful whelps! Back in my day, pixel art was all we had! There was no such thing as shaders or light-sourcing, or particle effects! We had never even heard the word “polygon.” All games had to be painstakingly built pixel-by-pixel, with limited color options and even when masterfully done, the image displayed would always be compromised by incredibly low-res television sets without standard color settings the developer could count on to display the game they wanted to properly.

 

It was all we had, but we were grateful for it...!

 

That said, this game looks good! Yeah, very Playstation One levels of detail and animation. Very Symphony of the Night-esque. I can dig it.

Lol I’m 36.  I’ve played and appreciated plenty of old pixel art games in my time. But that’s where I like to leave them. They had their time 30 years ago. I don’t need to revisit it just like I don’t need VHS graininess artificially added to my new movies.

I'm 39 and I love good pixel art just as much as I love nice HD animation. I'm happy to see they have delivered on their promises and I hope there is a PS4 demo when that version releases.

Okay, just started this game. If pixel art was keeping you away, well, you very rarely see pixel art of this quality, at least in the cutscenes. Reminds me of Hyper Light Drifter.

This might actually be the most pathetic highlight of any review I've ever read! Hey guys I think the art's weird and therefore the game is way worse! Please stick to the generic bullshit I'm preconditioned to enjoy!


Imagine that same line but for Wind Waker. That's the kind of dumbass comment you expect from us forumgoers, not professional reviewers!

From that quote, it reads to me like the artstyle overshadows the rest of the positives.  As if to say that's by far the best thing going for the game.
