~Rate The Last Movie/TV Show You Watched Thread~

Recommended Posts

I rewatched all of the Craig Bond movies over the last couple weeks. I don't have much of anything new or insightful to say about them. Casino Royale and Skyfall are great, Spectre is disappointing but still fun, Quantum of Solace is pretty much just a mess (understandable, given that it was a rush job during the writers strike).

I personally think Quantum of Solace is really good and a great coda to Casino Royale. It is a brutal, violent film about a killer coming to terms with himself and his lifestyle and calling his love a bitch who is dead.

But it's not a perfect film by any means.

Guns Of Navarone

A film that has continuedly slipped thru the cracks for me. Its action from start to finish but it does show its age. A group of commandos are sent to destroy a pair of guns on the island of Navarone. They are lead by Gregory Peck. Gregory Pecks character is a bit over done, he the worlds greatest mountain climber, a combat vet with experience second to none and speaks multiple language's with perfect accent. To me Anthony Quinn and David Niven are the real stars here though, they play as opposite side of the coin. Given the era of the film and when it was made , it could of turned into some ultra patriotic horse shit. But the entire crew has no issues calling out Pecks orders when they feel hes wrong. The film is worth all the praise it gets as one of the best war films . Watching Quinn pick off Nazis with sniper rifle from a mountain side is worth watching alone.

9/10

Lion: 7/10 - Thought it was pretty solid. The strengths of the movie are obviously the compelling beginning half where Saroo gets lost and then has to survive as a child. Then 20 years later he decides he wants to find his mother and then they had to figure out a way to make that dramatic I guess but I felt that wasn't really needed, in fact it was kind of distracting. I mean maybe it happened but we didn't really need to see him neglect his relationship and such in such a dramatic fashion in order to convey how important this is for him. Nicole Kidman talking about how she saw brown boys when she was 12 was also a bit awkward, but I think it ends well. Overall it's worth watching.

@Rachel made me watch this a few years ago. I enjoyed it too....for the most part.

It's funny that it popped up here, because I've been thinking about Lion a lot recently. I really loved it and felt deeply connected to the story, although the story of my own adoption was infinitely less dramatic than his. Like, if I wanted to find my birth mom, it would probably take like 2-3 phone calls, max. :p

The Terror: Season 1 - 8.5/10

I'm on episode 9 right now so tonight'll be the last episode but unless this shits the bed massively, it's been a truly great show. I've really enjoyed the slow, methodical pacing and the atmosphere is impeccable. If slow, mounting dread is your cup of tea, I definitely recommend this one.

Kiss Me Deadly (1955) - ?/10

I've been reading about this one for so many years, I finally decided to just buy the Criterion BluRay used because it isn't available for streaming. I made it about an hour into and stopped because I found it generally really boring and uninteresting. The opening was really cool and had a surreal vibe to it but it quickly seemed to devolve into a somewhat silly string of sillier conversations in people's apartments. Maybe I'll finish it another time but everything I've read about it lead me to believe it'll be much more atmospheric and weird than this.

So every October I try to watch 31 Horror/Halloween movies in 31 days. Figured this year it would be fun to actually post some thoughts about them as well :)

October 1 - Werewolves Within - 8/10

Started out light. Whodunnits are probably my favorite genre of movie so this was right up my alley. I had no idea the ATT girl was in it and I thought she was fantastic! She should really be in

more main line stuff.

October 2 - Prisoners of the Ghostland - 3/10

I enjoy me some weird ass Nicholas Cage movies. But this one…wasn’t it. Confusing, weird for the sake of weird, dumb. It would have been 1/10 but Bill Moseley was fantastic so bonus 2 points.

October 3 - Vivarium - 8/10

Now this was the good kind of weird. I love these kind of isolated horror movies where people wind up in a weird place and can’t get out. Kinda like Cube. They all have this really odd vibe to them that I dig. Great performances. Good, if not predictable, twist. Had never heard of it before scrolling through Primes horror section and was a really pleasant surprise!

This made me want to check this flick out. I love isolated locations like that as well, one of my favorite little mini-genres if one can call it that even. Or types of settings rather. That scene in The Others where she tries to leave always gave me an 'isolated location' boner

Huge surprise? Show was a huge hit and got a mediocre season 2 in its anthology run. Loved the first season, actors killed it, particularly Tobias Menzies.

Yea for me I mean. The cover image on Hulu looked cheesy as hell and I had never even heard of it. I just checked it out because I was bored and the description sounded cool enough. Did not expect that kind of caliber of a show whatsoever.

Oh yeah, it was a full prestige show with rave reviews when it came out based on an excellent book. But it's been a few years now, so you not knowing about it makes sense. I loved the show, but didn't watch season 2 based on poor overall reviews.

FREE GUY 3/5

Just finished watching it 5 minutes ago on Disney+ in Canada and it was good but not amazing. Couple fun cameos and a few good belly laughs here and there. I’d maybe give a higher score but watched it on tv with headphones, and not my usual Atmos and Projector setup. Might of added more enjoyment with the beefier chaotic sound design and intensity to some of the more chaotic action moments. Sadly my my receiver is on the fritz and still waiting for new one to arrive hopefully soon (been 5 weeks already) So many movies I’m holding out on watching until it’s all fixed

Change that The Terror: S1 score to a 9/10. The last episode was fucking good.

What a huge surprise this was.

Agreed 1000% easily one of my favorite seasons of television ever. Helped by the fact it’s the rare show they absolutely sticks the hell out of the landing. Now I wanna rewatch it.

Looked up some reviews of S2 after finishing S1 and yeah, gonna skip it for now.

The ending absolutely tied the whole thing together with a bow on top for me. Like you said, very rare. I feel like a rather large amount of shows and movies I watch at this point fuck up the ending in some way.

The show is actually motivating me to read about Inuit culture and folklore/mythology. I'm really curious about the origins of the beast and some other aspects. I know next to nothing about them but the show got me really interested.

October 4th - Blood Red Sky - 9/10

Been saving this one to watch for awhile. Really really well done take on the Vampire genre. Fantastic performances(the kid especially) and amazingly the 3rd act didn’t fall apart at all. Which I feel like movies set on airplanes always seem to do.

October 3rd - Vivarium 8/10

October 2nd - Prisoners of the Ghostland 3/10
October 1st - Werewolved Within 8/10

October 4th - Blood Red Sky - 9/10

October 3rd - Vivarium 8/10

October 2nd - Prisoners of the Ghostland 3/10
October 1st - Werewolved Within 8/10

October 6th - A Classic Horror Story - 6/10
Ummm I think I liked this. It’s sorta meta, so I guess that kinda excuses some of the really dumb shit the characters do? But you don’t really know it’s that way till later in the movie so the dumb decisions just annoyed me in the moment. The twist at the end is fun and a little unexpected and there’s a stinger that’s really good. Eh, not a masterpiece but a fun horror movie to watch this time of year.

escape room tournament of champions 2.5/5

i liked the first one. characters weren’t as interesting this time. i think the rooms in this one were more interesting but maybe they weren’t shot as well because it doesn’t hit the same. and fuck them for ending the movie on a cliffhanger.

I Spit on Your Grave 2: 5/10 - It's strange to call this a sequel when really the only thing that ties it with the first movie is the concept of the movie. So, in that case you know what to expect and that is half the problem with the movie. The second is the premise doesn't work as well as girl alone in the woods, this is girl in an apartment in New York that somehow no one sees or hears get taken away (all the way to a foreign country?) And while the bad guys were creeps in the first movie I don't think they were quite as dumb as the ones in this movie. In the first one it was kind of like, hunt down and torture kind of thing. In this one it's like, they walk right into her trap. On top of that I'd argue the demise of the villains in the first movie were better as well. Overall it's just a retread but not as good.
