Hitman's Wife’s Bodyguard - 1.5/5 - The first movie was one of those “bad but kind of enjoyable” movies that you watch whenever you stumble across it on tv. This one is straight bad. I think the actors know it too since the performances are way over the top. It’s a bummer.

I agree. the first one was like "turn the cameras on Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson and let them do their thing" which can carry basically any garbage movie (see: blade Trinity). The second one was like "people liked that, let's do that again, but this time with a gun to their heads. Dance, monkey, dance."

Monster Hunter - 3/10

 

It's really stupid, but somehow it's also far better than it has any right to be. Also a total waste of Tony Jaa. I kind of feel like it's another case where the stunt coordinator must have been fucking the director's wife, only in this case the director's wife is also the star actress and the stunt coordinator is a woman. Now I'm more interested in that than I am in the movie.

 

Every time you think the movie is going to go somewhere interesting, it doesn't.

Well you were harsher on it than I was, even by my scale (which I gave it a 4 if you look back). I thought the movie looked promising from the trailer (well the international trailer anyway) so it wasn't going to be "Dumpster Baby" bad (This is the movie you judge badness of all others) but a big budget POS. In any case, it's not worth wasting the muscles on my fingers to justify how bad or not bad it actually should be considered. It's bad, it sucks, it has no ending. The end.

Well, the director, Paul W.S. Anderson, is married to star Milla Jovovich. He's responsible for Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, the 6 Resident Evil live action movies, etc. So I think the director was fucking the star most likely.  

 

Also it was Wesley Snipes and Ryan Reynolds in Blade: Trinity, not Samuel L. Jackson, but I understand your point about letting them do their thing (for Hitman's Bodyguard sequel film).

I'm watching X-Files from the beginning. I fucking love this show so much and my girlfriend can't even keep her eyes on the screen for more than five minutes. I've rarely questioned life more than this.

Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain - 8/10

 

First I want to make @sblfilms proud and say I went to a THEATER and watched this in a Theater! (In fact my first time since 2017)

 

As for this one, I enjoyed it. The movie feels like a celebration of his life while still feeling a bit like his show in a way. Actually feels more like a behind the scenes of the show, with a focus on Bourdain himself and really outlines the ups and down of his life, of his psyche, etc. It's unfortunate what happened to him but I do feel like this is a worthy tribute even if the opening lines of the movie were what he actually wanted to have happen to him.

A Classic Horror Story

1/10

A Netflix horror film that is the worst horror film I have ever seen. The basic premise is a group of strangers traveling together get into an accident and  find them selves stuck in a forest and being hunted down. The film steals from many popular horror films and thats the only redeeming quality of the film and its why it got a 1 instead of a 0 out of 10. The film really thinks it smarter than it is, you can see the basic gist of where its headed long before the film makers intended you to do and when it does finally happen my only thought is

 

Its commentary on the viewer and society as a whole is about as subtle as a brick to the face.

The Endless: 7/10 - This is a Moorhead and Benson joint. The previous film I've seen from them was Spring, which I enjoyed. I think this one shares similar elements, as in making sure you don't know much about the movie going in. It's about two brothers (Played by Moorhead and Benson actually) who are supposed survivors / defectors of a "death cult" but, perhaps as the title might let on, there is more to the group than this. As survivors of the cult Aaron is bored with his mundane life and after receiving a mysterious tape in the mail, kind of get homesick and want to visit the camp.

 

I would say the biggest flaw  of the movie is how long it takes to set everything up and by the time you get to it, how blown away are you? Personally for me, I thought it was clever but not mindblowing. Also, it feels low budget, not that that is really an issue but at the same time it feels like it narrows the scope of how this story is told. Like this could have been a high budget school project or something. In any case it's an interesting concept but feels like there could have been more oomph to the whole movie.

Watched The Green Mile for the first time tonight. Somehow skipped this one for years. I read the book a couple months ago, so it was time. Husband and I really liked it and I liked how it was faithful to the book. 9/10

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence: 7/10 - I had been wanting to re-watch this for a while. At least after I watched the original and live action version. For some reason when I got the itch (I had rented it the first time) to see it recently the blu-ray was hard to come by. It must have been reprinted in the last couple of weeks because Amazon had more to sell so I picked it up.

 

I think that many would probably consider the first movie to be a groundbreaking anime. So how do you try to keep up that standard 9 years later? Well I guess make the movie a CG and animated blend. I think for the most part the results are quite striking. A lot of 3D in anime looks bad but for the most part it generally looks good here and sometimes downright gorgeous looking, impressive that it mostly holds up in 2004.

 

The looks aren't the only ambitious part of the movie. You would generally think that most people would want to watch GitS for Major Kusanagi, but this one has the guts to make a movie basically about Batou. I think they pull it off though because the story and mystery is mostly compelling. The writing does get bogged down in random quotes later on in the movie but overall I think it's pretty solid.

 

Although the first movie is held in high regard I think it's mostly average to be honest. I feel like this one, while maybe not as action packed, is better in some regards and even continues the philosophical conversation about what is life even further than the first movie did. It's a worthy sequel while kind of turning expectations upside down. Also fun fact Studio Ghibli helped with some of the animation in the movie!

Blade: Trinity - 1/10

 

I was curious to watch this after I said something another thread about just being able to turn a camera on Ryan Reynolds and making a movie passable. NOPE. Dear God, this movie is fucking terrible. I mean, the only point it gets is for Ryan Reynolds' scenes, but it still completely sucks.

 

Like, take a trip with me. Imagine XXX, The Fast and the Furious, and The Last Witch Hunter. Imagine everything you liked about those movies, and then remove them, and then make a movie out of the remnants. Then imagine Deadpool narrating over the resulting franken-movie, only it's not meant to be funny.

 

Edit: Random thought, but the human blood farms have people vacuum sealed IN THEIR CLOTHES. That's fucking gross. And the password for their blood harvesting farm is "harvest," these are supposed to be immortals, jesus christ you could think of a better word than "harvest" as your harvest password. Like they probably speak Aramaic and shit, I'm assuming the Aramaic word for "password" is better than "harvest."

Little White Lie

 

Interesting little documentary about a girl raised by her parents as basically white and Jewish...who well, was not. Not sure what to rate it. It looks more like a film student project with home movie snippets and her filming her parents on an IPhone or some shit but it's quite fascinating. You expect someone to be the obvious bad guy but as usual with real life and family, it's not that simple. 

 

The Great British Baking Show

 

I don't know wtf is going on with me lately but I only want to watch either ultra-wholesome things or documentaries, that's about it. This show is lovely but makes me viciously hungry. I've seen S1 and half of S2 so far and for some reason, I hate half the contestants of S2 while they were basically all really fun to watch on S1.

I'm a huge fan of both films so I like them more than you do but this was a solid review!

I don't think Blade: Trinity is that bad, and there are some fun moments, but after the legit good Blade 1 and 2, it's a massive step down.

My sister borrowed a VHS of the Green Mile and when I was 11, I stole it from her room and watched it after everyone in my house went to bed. I don’t know if that was a good move, considering the content of the movie and all that.

 

I also took Final Destination 2. Which I still love.

Yeah the 2nd movie is easily my fav of the series. Opening scene is my favourite setup because it feels like the most realistic possible outcome I could really see myself get caught in. Plus the barb wire slicing the dude into pieces was amazing seeing the first time. The last 2 were also ok but the 3D really added to the entertainment. Have both of them at home and the 3D pop in the bridge collapse with some of the impalements just shooting straight into your own eyes

Im legit addicted to British Baking show. It’s like the highlight of my year when it comes out. Absolutely blew my fucking mind when Old Greg took over as one of the hosts 😂😂😂

It’s made me very nervous driving behind anyone with wood strapped to their vehicle.

 

 

Just started to watch the He-Man reboot with my daughter in the morning (namely I’ve been watching it, she’s been eating or playing). It is awesome and such a good blend of 80s throwback without all the irritating parts of the 80s.

Clarkson's Farm

 

Show is exactly as implied, Jeremy Clarkson attempting to run a farm. Unlike the typical Top Gear adventures where they do something for a week at most this spans a whole year from fall 2019 to fall 2020. Clarkson comes off as genuinely caring about the farm and really putting in the effort to make it work to various levels of success because the show does go into the fact that farming is really difficult. Kaleb a local farm worker gets the best screen time and always has a good barb to throw at Clarkson's fuck ups. Of course a show filmed over a whole year and cut down to 8 40 minutes episodes can make anyone look great or awful, competent or a disaster, energetic or lazy so who knows what really happened there.

 

8.5/10

 

 

Mythic Quest season 2

 

There are some quality character moments this season that really feel unearned, they needed a few more episodes to develop things out especially between Ian and Poppy. Side characters all remain solid with F. Murray Abraham's continuing to be a scene chewer in the best kind of way.
