The Gentlemen was good. Maybe a bit slow at times, but some great performances. Especially from Hugh Grant who just chews up the screen whenever he’s present. Also wanna say that I enjoyed Rock ‘N Rolla too, and seems underrated at times from his movie catalogue.

Indeed The Gentlemen has some spectacular performances

I have loved everything Guy Ritchie has directed up through Game of Shadows. Hell, I even liked The Man from U.N.C.L.E. to a point. King Arthur sucked, Wrath of Man sucked, Aladdin sucked. I haven't seen The Gentlemen, apparently that one's alright.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is money, that movie slaps hard. And King Arthur is severely underrated, with a great score, great cinematography, an insane Jude Law performance. That movie rocks. The Gentlemen was also pretty great. Aladdin was whatever though. I haven't seen Wrath of Man yet.

UPGRADE 4.5/5

This was my 2nd viewing of the movie and I think was even better a 2nd time, because now I see the clues to the conclusion we got in the end. Plus the camera work in some of the fight scenes are just fucking awesome too. Also I think my receiver might be dying on me because I lost picture and had consistent intermittent sound loss. I tried 4 different cables and  various HDMI ports with the same result. :( But go fucking see one of my fav movies from *looks up date, Holy Shit!* 2018 if you haven’t already.

I resubbed to AMC A-List since now that my work schedule has changed, I’m able to see more stuff. In the last week, I’ve watched:

Stillwater- if your daughter is in a French prison for 5 years, wouldn’t you try to learn at least a couple words of French? I didn’t really enjoy this movie at all. If Matt Damon is stirring up shit in Europe, it should be as Jason Bourne, or that other talented guy.

The Protege- kinda fun, mostly forgettable. I know he’s the bigger star, but it’s pretty rude to Maggie Q that Michael Keaton gets top billing. It’s her movie.

The Night House - I went into this with only a vague memory of seeing half a trailer. Rebecca Hall rules. I don’t know if I would call it all that scary, but it has an unnerving tone that is effective throughout. Really enjoyed it.

I want to start posting in here but I've legit watched nothing but utter trash lately. All my arthouse cred from my younger years is out the window. No wonder I didn't like Green Knight.

Lately I've been farting into my couch while watching Car Masters: Rust To Riches which must be one of the stupidest shows I've gotten into in ages.

Triloquist: 3/10 - Not sure what compelled me to watch this but it was not good. I think the movie is self aware that it is not good but the problem is it isn't in a good way. Imagine if Child's Play was like a dummy instead of a doll but with no explanation other than "magic" of how it works. Story, pretty bad, it's like a road trip movie I guess (like Sonic the Hedgehog) but they stop killing people and then make this girl they want to have the brother's baby special. Acting is quite poor as well and the writing is bad and fully of cringe slurs and stuff like that (you know the "f" word and "r" word) and yeah not very good.

I thought the movie was alright. It's a rehash of Pirates of the Caribbean in a lot of ways, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The one thing I found weird is that I realized I subconsciously don't buy it when Dwayne Johnson has a love interest in a movie. It's weird.

@Greatoneshere

I know we talked about The Lighthouse extensively on here when it came out and I was lukewarm on it. I just rewatched it last night because I'm reading a book about unsolved mysteries that featured a lighthouse story.

I liked it a lot more with a fresh perspective and less preconceived notions hype, if that makes sense. I watched with subtitles this time and it made way more sense, I think that's what fucked me up initially. Like half the plot and dialog was news to me this time around.

Subtitles are a lifesaver. Really glad you gave it a second chance!

Aliens: I'm not going to rate it because I watched this as part of Max's watch party. He had an Aliens watch party on twitch which was pretty fun. I guess the Aliens special edition is streaming on there (on amazon prime) until the end of the month. I've seen it before but it's been a while. A pretty good movie I must say. :p

But watch parties are pretty fun, I hope he does more.

I thought it was way more of a Mummy rehash than Pirates but yeah basically. And agreed on the love interest thing. I think he and Emily Blunt has fantastic chemistry as far as bickering with each other. But none of that translated to any kind of sexual tension. Only movie I remember Rock having a natural feeling love interest was Walking Tall.

Been catching up on a lot of Amazon Prime content while I've been on vacation

The Tomorrow War - 4/10

It was... fine.

Spoiler

So... the toxin that they spent literally the entire second act of the movie focusing on, meant kind of nothing? They just kind of found the ship and blew it up and then stabby-stabbed the queen (yes, they also hit her with the toxin, but it seemed like it didn't really matter at that point)

Cool ideas, but... eh.

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse - 4/10

If you've seen one, you've seen them all. It was... fine.

Spoiler

If you're going to have a political thriller which always has a "good guy who was secretly a bad guy the whole time," do NOT cast Guy Pearce as the good guy who was secretly a bad guy the whole time. As soon as he stepped on screen I was like "oh he bad." I was trying to figure out whether Jamie Bell's character was in on it, but as soon as Guy Pearce entered frame it was game over as far as any suspense was concerned.

Jolt - 5/10

Kind of funny at times. It was... fine. It had more character than the other two. I'll probably actually remember that I've seen this one, whereas the other ones I'll probably forget about within a couple years.

The Green Knight will need a similar reassessment. Just watched it, seen it three times now, it is amazing. :p

I actually saw it a second time because my friend bought me a ticket to go to one of those movie + beer + snacks places. Honestly, I liked it even less the second time unfortunately. I really wanted to love that movie, it sounds amazing on paper, so I'm definitely not just hating on it for sport.

Mirror - Hit a lot different than it did however-many-years ago when I first saw it. The way he can film people in interesting ways with their faces obscured is always a sight to see. Still on my lower tier for Tarkovsky, but what the hell does that even mean in such a body of work.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions - The kind of low-level genre fodder than I can get on board with. It does enough with the concept to make it enjoyable while not having any of the gusto to blow me out of the water. There’s also a genuinely affecting death here.

Brewster McCloud - Much stranger than I had any inkling about. Main character is psychotic, he’s pursued by a Bullitt-esque character that the movie makes an effort to downplay, and helped by a woman who’s heavily implied to be a literal fallen angel, and Shelley Duvall is a ridiculously endearing badass. A deeply silly and dark movie that ties these two disparate qualities together very well with a stunner of an ending. Never short of reasons to love Bob Altman.

Reminiscence - Modern noir with a lot of nice window dressing that doesn’t use its concept to its fullest (or even much) potential outside of a couple brief instances (great climax, and a mid-movie scene where someone recalls a memory of a memory.) Also wastes Ferguson, a great actor who could’ve made a fantastic and memorable femme fatale given the right chance.

The Protege - Somewhat-competent nuts-and-bolts action programmer completely sunk by a terrible Out of Sight/Mr and Mrs Smith subplot grafting. Pretty disappointing, but can't say the trailer didn't warn me.

Candyman - Provocative and unnerving. Gets a bit too caught up in its social commentary and the plot gets muddled towards the end, but puts forward a bunch of ideas that largely pay off big time. DaCosta’s got the chops, really taken with her visual approach from the get-go.

Bang the Drum Slowly: 7/10 - Before @sblfilms' Astros were banging the drums @ManUtdRedDevils' Yankees were banging them in 1973. Back then paying your best pitcher $100k was unheard of. As for the movie it feels a bit subdued, like a lot of old movies. Obviously a movie about some dude dying should be pretty somber but it kind tries to keep the spirits up, much like the characters in the movie, most of the time. There's nothing really too dramatic in either the ball playing or the conclusion of the movie. It's a fine movie but ultimately impactful for me.

Vacation Friends - 7.5/10

I really enjoyed it. It’s not really that laugh out loud funny. But the story is much better than I assumed. Def tropey but done really well. Cena is really coming into his own and hits not only the comedic notes but also a few nice dramatic ones as well. I def recommend it for anyone looking for a fun, feel good story.

What's Wrong with Secretary Kim: 6/10 - So word of warning up front I'm going to post uncovered spoilers for this show that I'm 99% sure none of you will watch.

I decided to check out this show because I was a fan of Park Min-young's other show. She's a woman so beautiful that I'd slam @Greatoneshere's head in a car door just so I could have a pleasant conversation with her, but this show didn't do it for me at all.

So the idea of the show is Park Min-young plays secretary Kim, the secretary for a wealthy vice chairman of a company. The guy has a reputation for being a selfish narcissist and it comes off that way as well, because he is. He has no thoughts about women, and won't even let them touch him other than his secretary who straightens his necktie and attends to his every need. So she's worked with the company for 9 years and decides she wants to quit because she's achieved her goal of providing for her father and 2 sisters and would like to find a life of her own. The Vice Chairman doesn't like this but he can never express that he likes her and just kind of sees her as an asset for him. But he will use the excuse that he does like her to keep her attention. So he woos her with his wealth and such in attempt to keep her around. So she falls for it and they fall in love, I suppose, but it doesn't really feel that way ever. The guy is all into himself the whole time, and sure he says he loves her but I just couldn't get on board.

The show, like many others, is one that props up a wealthy CEO who needs love. But unlike other shows where the CEO has a problem, like he's an alien, or a goblin or has some sort of disease, this guy is just a rich asshole. There is a small subplot that links the two together, at a young age when he was 8 she she was 5 they were abducted by a woman who killed herself, however we are lead to believe the vice chairman's brother was the one with her, but it later turns out it was actually him. He supposedly lost his memory and switched memories with his brother but then turns out he remembered everything and even remembered secretary Kim all the way back. So not only is this subplot inconsequential the guy was a liar his whole life and she goes along with it. I mean, he gave her an education but treated her like trash so is that a good trade off? In the end this guy didn't do anything to deserve our love except have money and ultimately the show is a waste of time because  there's no drama, just fake drama.

What saved it for me was all of the side characters. They all had much more interesting stories going on. I think the show would have worked better if the show actually focused on Kim escaping the work place and the shackles of her boss and actually finding a new life rather than just continuing to work in the same place and ultimately falling to her boss's wishes.

Also, something silly is there is a lot of blatant product placement in the show. On 3 different occasions they order Domino's pizza (I wonder if @thewhyteboar can  tell us if Korean Domino's pizza is good) and on another occasion the two are sitting in a car and he says he won't move until she drinks this coffee, so she does but like it's pretty obvious what's going on when she does. In any case if you like Park Min-young stick with the other show she was in, Her Private Life, a much better written and compelling love story than what we got with this show.

The Last Man On Earth 7.5/10

Vincent Price is the titular last man on earth as a virus spread wiping out humanity. This version sees the creatures as a hybrid vampire/zombie that attack Price every evening. They are rather weak on their own but dangerous in groups and they are not mindless either , they often taunt him by calling out his name at night from the outside. During the day he gathers food and hunts down infected, kills them and then burns the bodies.

The film was made in the late 60's , violence and gore is never shown but heavily implied. The most violent scenes are when Price hunts the infected which goes hand in hand with the underlying theme. It was also filmed in Rome but set in NY so it has this weird vibe to it, it feels like an off kilter dream where you are at a familiar location but its an amalgamation of a bunch of different places. I watched this on Kino's new Bluray release but it is open domain so you could watch it somewhere like YT.

Korean pizza is a pretty mixed bag. There are small local places that can be pretty good. But as for chains, there are Korean chains and American chains. The American chains (Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Dominoes) far outclass the Korean ones. Korean places will put shit like shrimp, rice cake, potato, and "yellow gold sauce" (a think a weird mustard) on their pizza. Steer clear of any Korean pizza place.

I dunno, that sounds interesting at least.

Seems like they got strange toppings from Dominos on the show anyway.

Under the Silver Lake - An engaging enough mystery/thriller/noire to hang out with for a while. I related to it a decent amount and there were definitely some memorable moments, but also I think it's one of many examples of a movie that would be so much better if plot and character behaviors played out more believably.  7/10

It was definitely a weird movie but I found it very interesting and strangely hypnotic.

Some re-watches here:

Jackie Brown - 10/10

One of my favorite movies of all time. There's something about the chemistry between Pam Grier and Robert Forster that is so believable and ultimately sweetly melancholic.

Rear Window - 7/10

I know it's a mega-classic and I like a lot about it but some of it never fully clicked with me despite multiple viewings since I was a kid. I'm more into Vertigo and The Birds myself.
