A data collecting buoy in Florida recorded an ocean temperature of over 101 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday.

A buoy in Manatee Bay, Florida, showed an ocean temperature reading of over 101 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday night, the latest sign of record heat in the coastal waters.

The National Data Buoy Center, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, recorded the temperature about five feet below the surface off South Florida’s East Coast at 10 p.m. ET.

It’s a critically hot reading for an ocean, and is especially concerning for the coral reefs in the area, which typically thrive at temperatures between 73 and 84 degrees, according to NOAA. And while it may be an all-time high, the comparison to other top readings is tricky because of how it was recorded.

The existing record for hottest ocean surface temperature is reportedly 99.7, which was reached in Kuwait Bay in the Persian Gulf. Jeff Berardelli, Florida WFLA News Channel 8′s chief meteorologist and climate specialist, said it’s unclear if the latest reading will be counted as a world record.

“These buoys that are inside Florida Bay — so that’s to the north of the Florida Keys and to the South Florida peninsula — they’re all in very shallow, murky, dark water,” Berardelli told CNBC. “Because it’s murky, and because it’s contaminated with sediment, the water temperatures are reflective of the fact that darker surfaces absorb more heat.”

Almost every single coral in a coral reef nursery in the Florida Keys has died as NOAA raises its coral bleaching warning system to the highest level possible for the area.

Coral reefs play a vital role in the overall health of the planet. And off the coast of Florida, they're in jeopardy, as the relentless heat continues.

The Coral Restoration Foundation said in one coral reef restoration site off the state's coast, the extreme temperatures have proved deadly.

"On July 20th, CRF teams visited Sombrero Reef, a restoration site we've been working at for over a decade. What we found was unimaginable — 100% coral mortality," said Phanor Montoya-Mayoa, a restoration program manager at the foundation who has a doctorate in biology. "We have also lost almost all the corals in the Looe Key Nursery in the Lower Keys."

Sombrero Reef is a protected area off the Florida Keys, just past Marathon. It's a popular site for snorkelers and divers as the area is home to star corals that are considered endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The Coral Restoration Foundation has been on a mission to restore the reef, spending years planting and protecting various corals.

But extreme heat is deadly for the ocean animals. When ocean temperatures become too warm, the algae that normally live within the coral's tissues come out, causing the animals to turn white. This is known as coral bleaching. While bleaching events aren't necessarily 100% fatal for reefs, they do place them under significantly more stress and make them vulnerable, especially to future bleaching events.

A report today indicated that the gulf stream could destabilize as early as 2025, though it's not likely to until at least 2050. But if it does, you're looking at potentially millions and millions of deaths as rain patterns and ocean/atmospheric currents completely change in the northern hemisphere.

A collapse would bring catastrophic climate impacts but scientists disagree over the new analysis

The Gulf Stream system could collapse as soon as 2025, a new study suggests. The shutting down of the vital ocean currents, called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (Amoc) by scientists, would bring catastrophic climate impacts.

Amoc was already known to be at its weakest in 1,600 years owing to global heating and researchers spotted warning signs of a tipping point in 2021.

The new analysis estimates a timescale for the collapse of between 2025 and 2095, with a central estimate of 2050, if global carbon emissions are not reduced. Evidence from past collapses indicate changes of temperature of 10C in a few decades, although these occurred during ice ages.

Other scientists said the assumptions about how a tipping point would play out and uncertainties in the underlying data are too large for a reliable estimate of the timing of the tipping point. But all said the prospect of an Amoc collapse was extremely concerning and should spur rapid cuts in carbon emissions.

It definitely feels hopeless. So many events are happening that are screaming for drastic change yet we do so little about it.

I’m not close to conspiratorial, but recently the UK has effectively abandoned its green pledge and you vaguely wonder if the political consensus is there is nothing that can now be done, so why bother.

That is kinda frightening. Yea, this world is drastically changing and honestly what can we really do? :/

Well...we can stop it. But that would require reducing corporate profits. Hell, consumers could do nothing and we could still solve this with proper requirements of large industry. Things would cost more, but we could do it.

I feel like I used to see more articles about how we are making progress on climate change and avoided the worst outcome. There is more to do but we are making a difference and governments have bought in. Now my feed is full of doomsday and green technologies suck. It’s depressing for sure especially since I have a young daughter.

I can see someone from PETA trying to rescue a live lobster from a fancy restaurant, rushing it to the “safety” of the ocean water off the coast. The lobster is drop into the ocean only to see it boil alive in front of them. Falling to their knees crying, the newly cooked lobster smell overcomes their senses, they devours it.

Instead the Hulk bullied New York State into shutting down Indian Point claiming he's an environmentalist.

The negative environmentalist attitude toward nuclear is infuriating. I must leave room for being wrong, because I'm not an expert on nuclear technology, but the "environmentalist" arguments against nuclear that I've seen are just bad arguments, so I'm inclined to reject their rejection :p

The environmental movement did not kill nuclear in the 70s.

Coal did.

When do we start beheading those holding back progress on healing the planet? When is enough enough?

Who are you going to behead? This can’t be fixed unless China/India/Russia/etc also want to tackle it, and they just aren’t. For every ton the western world stops producing, they’ll produce 10 more, because they need the economic growth.

pretending this is something that can be legislated just doesn’t hold water.

World War because of Global warming is gonna be sooooo much better.

So, the left wing position is what, then? The subjugation of every country who won’t fall in line with their climate goals?

what’s the solution? It’s not recycling and solar in a few first world countries, that’s for sure. Theres not enough minerals to realize the electric car push with current battery technology.

India and China especially are increasing output of greenhouse gases at unprecedented rates.

im not pretending it’s not a problem, but world war to prevent world war seems a bit backwards.

Its a problem with no solution, because no upcoming nation is going to cripple its growth because the superpowers of Europe and America say so.
