208,000 student-loan borrowers who attended ITT Tech got their debt balances canceled, along with some defrauded by Kaplan Career Institute.

President Joe Biden's Education Department just delivered relief to all remaining students defrauded by a major for-profit institution.

 

On Tuesday, the department announced it has approved $3.9 billion in debt relief for all remaining federal borrowers who attended now-defunct ITT Technical Institute from January 1, 2005 through its closure in 2016. According to the press release, this will impact 208,000 borrowers, including those who did not submit a borrower defense claim themselves — a type of claim a borrower can file if they believe they were defrauded by a for-profit school. Borrowers impacted by this relief will not have to take any additional action.

 

"It is time for student borrowers to stop shouldering the burden from ITT's years of lies and false promises," Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. "The evidence shows that for years, ITT's leaders intentionally misled students about the quality of their programs in order to profit off federal student loan programs, with no regard for the hardship this would cause."

 

Along with the news for former ITT Tech students, the department also announced that it has notified DeVry University — a school previously found of fraudulent behavior — that it's required to pay millions of dollars for approved borrower defense applications. A DeVry spokesperson told Insider that it has received the department's notice, and that the school "remains deeply committed to student success and preparing students to thrive in careers shaped by continuous technological change."

When I was in high school, I wanted to get into the video game industry (considering how much of a shithole it is now, I may have dodged a bullet).  Back then, there weren't really any places near me that offered classes on that, but DeVry claimed to, so I went there.

 

I was a stupid teenager, and that's the kind of people these schools prey upon.

Granted I only made it two semester for computer technology, or whatever it was called, but pretty much most people in my class had extenuating circumstances. Those kind of places were great at preying on that shit. It's the same type of thing as "down on your luck!? Our business will help you because we CARE" marketing you see everywhere in the States. Lots of veterans in my class at the time.

I think what I find most surprising about it is that we have community colleges all over the country that provide actual education for reasonable prices. When I was 18, that seemed like the most sensible route and is the direction I went. Were you not aware of alternatives at the time?

It's actually interesting the current state of things in tech where bootcamps are very very very common but there not far off from what you would have gotten going through something like Devry/ITT Tech.

Growing up, I remember it being DigiPen was the place to drool over. I've over the years have heard some pretty awful things about it.

Certainly not. I am genuinely interested in how people end up in such places. As I mentioned, in the US we have community colleges all over the place that provide real educations for reasonable prices, so I wonder how people pass over that option for these for profit schools which are more expensive anyway.

I didn't think you were. It was for my joke in my first post.

 

I also wonder because growing up it was something I was actively considering. Go to community college for the basics then see about transfering over depending how my studies went. I just in the end struck gold and was able to skip the whole process and go straight into a job (yay having no life in high school and getting into coding as a hobby).

In grad school I was working at Best Buy during summers to help get a bit more money. There was a guy that worked there who was going to ITT and said we were getting the same education because his yearly tuition was 45k. 45 fucking k, to ITT. Fuck these schools. He wasn't ex-military so he wasn't rocking GI Bill money.

To be honest, I'm like @sblfilms, I know these sham for-profit schools are predatory, even growing up I felt it was quite clear, so it is surprising to see so many people fall for it - however I don't think they should be mocked, but I do find it surprising when there are so many other, legitimate alternatives, but the reasons given in this thread explain it some. Either way, cancel the debt and destroy all these sham schools.

I had several high school classmates do ITT because they couldn’t afford to go to a state school hours away and couldn’t really do CC because it was also hours away by car 

 

and also our high school guidance counselor was a moron and smoked pot with some seniors so he was zero help for anyone

Sorry, the sentence structure threw me off, but I get what you're saying now.  Yeah, that was a big part of it, but even the slightest bit of research at the time would show a lack of accreditation, etc. I mean, you're dumping lots of money into one of the most important things in your life, your education, presumably you're gonna personally research the hell out of everything before dropping a dime. That's what I did when I was applying to undergraduate colleges when I was 17/18. I get why people fell for it - online classes, convenience - but a modicum of research made it clear. I mean, when I was a teen/young 20's my friends and I made fun of the commercials for such places, that's how obvious we thought it was at least.

 

I want the victims of this scam to be made whole as much as possible, I'd hate to be taken advantage of like this, but to your point, "online and convenient" would at least never be enough to convince me, on its own, to spend mad money on it.
