if you could get through the first 10 hours of KOTOR to get to Dantooine to become Jedi, there’s nothing nearly as long or as much of a slog in ME1. It has a slower start than ME2/3, but much of that is introducing you to the universe, races, cultures, politics, and history. You can speed through it focusing on the main stuff. 
 

Id say it is very much worth playing ME1. It lays the ground work for the later games and is a great game in its own right. I am biased for sure. ME was my favorite franchise of the PSWii60 era of consoles. In terms of world building and being an expansive space epic, I feel it can hang with the Star Wars and Star Trek, easily.

Without even playing ME, I'm just thinking about what an incredible generation that was.  I've been playing mostly 360 games lately, stuff from XBLA, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, Dead Space, etc., and the quality is pretty staggering.  I'd happily trade in all of the current bloated open world shit and the overly cinematic third person games for more of what we were getting regularly 10 years ago.

 

Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely play the first one.  It's been about 15 years since I played KOTOR but I remember being pretty into it right from the start, so I'm sure ME will be great.

ME1 is awesome and is a must play before heading into part 2 & 3. You'll really enjoy it, I'm almost positive.

Garrus was always my dude and I played through the 360 versions multiple times with him in my party. But I can't keep this fucker alive for five minutes.

Are you placing him with the squad controls? I find that has been more important than I remember (and also way simpler with the new D pad controls).

Also are you upgrading his armor? What difficulty are you playing on? What stats are you prioritzing when you level him up? All of that stuff matters in this game.

Yeah.. like I said, Garrus was always my go-to squad mate. But I don't remember ever having this much trouble keeping him alive. This is early in the game, I haven't even come across better armor yet. I have mods attached to his armor but it hasn't seemed to matter much.

Yeah, but only for the bigger fights. Like the one on the planet with Liara. There was no way he was making through the fight with the Geth outside the tunnel. But even through small mundane fights he's getting taken out. It's frustrating enough where I just started using Wrex instead.

@XxEvil AshxX that liara meeting planet is def the first time where the game challenges you a little. It’s crazy that you can spend like 6 hours on the citadel before going there doing essentially zero combat lol. It’s such an odd game for a AAA like mainstream title.

Garrus was my boy back when I played it on 360. I wonder why he isn't performing for you? He was badass... this seems odd and hopefully they didn't fuck anything up.

Looks like a pretty quick and dirty port to me. Some character faces look a bit better, some look rough still (like Ashley). For some reason it looks too clean. In any case I kinda feel the same way @SimpleG does. Game looks fine on PC with Mods, and maybe even better.

 

What if I told you that these are actually from the original version of the game?

I bought this and loaded it on my Series X.  Going to start the first game once I finish RE Village in the next few days.  I can't overstate how excited I am to dive into this series and see what the fuss is about.

 

Also, if anybody is getting this on Xbox, make sure to punch the MS rewards quest that gives you 6000 points ($6).  Between that and the EA Play discount through Game Pass, it comes out to about $50.

Obviously the greatest incentive to get the game is it includes the majority of the DLC (I think one is missing) but personally I'm not clawing at the wall to replay the same thing I have already with marginal differences.

I’m not sure how much the PC mods improve the visuals, but if a person only ever played the old console versions it’s a huge upgrade in both performance and visuals. 
 

The only DLC missing is an obscure one I think they lost the source code or something for. 
 

I think the quality of life and performance improvements of the first game are extremely noticeable, and I’ve heard 3 looks almost like a new release.

 

Personally I’m quite happy with the purchase.

Started the first game and loving it.  I'm wondering what the recommendations for classes are?  I think someone said Soldier was boring, but I generally am combat focused in these types of games so I chose Vanguard - is that a solid choice or is there something else that's better for a newcomer to these games?

Vanguard is a great choice!

Soldiers (going off my bad memory) focus on guns and armor, and miss out on biotics and techs, which are generally fun and satisfying to use in combat. So with Vanguard you get some additional biotic options while also being proficient with guns. You should be good to go.

Vanguard is a great choice. Combination of Biotic and Soldier class I believe so you can be pretty combat focused with a couple of biotic powers thrown in for good measure. Plus they dumbed down the training requirements so even though you can't "train" in Assault and sniper rifles with this class, you can still use them. You just won't get any of the special attacks for those weapons (Overkill for assault rifles and Assasination for snipers I believe) Vanguard specializes in pistols and shotguns. I'm using Vanguard for this runthrough ( I mistook it for sentinel ) Still a solid class.

Vanguard is probably the best class in the game. Sentinel/Infiltrator next probably with the amount of Geth in the first game.

Yup vanguard is a great choice since you'll get some of the combat skills from soldier, but also get biotic skills to have fun with. In the second and third game each class gets their own unique power too, and with vanguard you'll get the ability to use a biotic rush to basically turn yourself into the Flash and slam into your opponents. Pair that with a shotgun and you can rush up to them, go, "HI! Bye, bye!" before blasting them in the face harder than a male porn star on a new girl getting her first money shot.

Can you get a platinum on the first playthrough? I know in the original game you could only get all the achivements if you replayed the game a couple of times. Did they change the achivements?

 

EDIT: Apparently you CAN get them in one playthrough.
