Hydroxychloroquine was never seen as the solution in the medical world but it was definitely used a lot as a stopgap.

This news just came out yeaterday and it's fairly depressing.

I think we are in for a lot of these disappointments.

And I’m starting to wonder the possible death toll if there simply aren’t good treatments or vaccines for 2 or 3 years. Because we aren’t going to stay home for long, people are going to get it, and we will have to keep reallocating resources within each country to keep up with localized surges.

There are a few vaccine human trials kicking off right now. While it doesn't mean we have a solution ready for this summer I don't think it will be a full 2-3 years before we have one. It's kind of crazy that some parts of the world will have this under control and partially return to normalcy while the USA will continue to be a cluster fuck over people's selfishness.

My future in-laws are really testing my patience at this point...They aren't full bore chuds when it comes to the shutdown efforts, but they are incessantly badgering my girlfriend, to the point that she spent basically all last night in tears because she is so stressed out about the situation. She's floated the idea of coming over and hanging out in the driveway and her mom needled her about just coming inside because it's 'no big deal, you go to the grocery store right', and meanwhile her dad will absolutely make one or more snide, shitty remarks about the situation.

Personally it doesn't bother me, because my dad is the poster child of risk (COPD, aortic graft, high blood pressure, you name it), so my stance is simple: I ain't going over, and I will take any measure - no matter how ridiculous in their eyes - to keep him safe. But I wouldn't hold her to that standard (all I've asked is that she only do what she is comfortable doing, and that I support whatever decision falls in that framework), so it is especially frustrating to see her family push so hard on her. At some point things will open up more and we will have to assume some level of on-going risk, but until then I'm willing to hold out and wait for things like testing and contact tracing to pick up.

We don’t have a very good track record of producing vaccines for Coronavirus was from the articles I’ve been reading. They are apparently very difficult to do. So what if we simply don’t get one or it’s effectiveness is limited and needs to be rejiggered each year like the flu vaccine, and some years we don’t have one at all for a particular strain?

I think there are just a lot of assumptions being made about timelines based around the idea that we will definitely have a vaccine in the 12-18 months range that will be very effective...but we have no idea if that is true.

I read a really insightful twitter thread from a virologist (which I can't find now) about how even if we fail at making a perfect vaccine, the results will still be beneficial. The few reasons he gave:

  • If, like the flu, the virus mutates and protection doesn't last, it will slow it down for at least a season, preventing an overload of ICUs
  • In the above cases, even after it stops working perfectly, it will still work for some, reducing the overall spread, as the body will have some memory of the similar viral strain
  • When vaccines don't work to prevent catching a virus, they still tend to reduce the impact on the body due to some defences being prepared from the memory of the strain

For these reasons he said that even a failure could save tens or hundreds of thousands of lives (from catching ), and more from the reduced impact if they do catch it.

There is absolutely no guarantee that a vaccine will ever be created for COVID-19.  The common cold is a coronavirus, and many decades and billions of dollars of research have been poured towards developing a vaccine for it and yet there is none.

And if there is one created (I'm a little more hopefully something will be created, but I don't think the efficacy will be great), there's a good chance it won't be for 2-3 years. I think lots of the public is expected a vaccine van to start rolling around in March 2021.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a new commercial rent assistance program on Friday that will help small and medium-sized businesses struggling to pay rent amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Canadian government unveiled the details of the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program, which it said will help lower rents by 75 per cent for qualifying businesses. The program will be administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

The program will provide forgivable loans to commercial property owners to cover 50 per cent of rent payments from April to June. The loans will be forgiven if the property owner agrees to reduce rent by at least 75 per cent for those three months, leaving businesses on the hook for 25 per cent of the rent.

As a side note, some people are very angry that Trudeau is providing financial support for students ($1,250-$1,750/mo from May until August). The reason? Normally, Canada's fruit and vegetable industry flies Guatamalans and Mexicans to Canada to work the fields, and pays them less than minimum wage (since their lodging counts as compensation). It turns out than no one wants to work 12+hr days in the sun picking fruit for minimum wage and no benefits, so farmers can't find people now, and were hoping the provincial governments (Quebec, mainly) would get students to do it. Private care homes were the same, and were working with Quebec to get summer students into care homes to work since they pay so little and the job is so hard. Now that students are getting money from the federal government, why would they work crappy minimum wage jobs with no benefits? The solution, of course, is to pay these people better for hard jobs, but private industry doesn't want that.
