At least with those, you get guys wearing cool uniforms and swanky shades on your TV for about 5 minutes while they read their manifesto and then it's back to regular programming.

There’s a very good version of Julius Caesar that is set in an African nation during a coup.

Can someone give me the tl;dr of how a political party can just keep swapping out who is in charge consequence free?

In system like that of the UK, the voting public votes for the party and not for the individual politician.  This means that the leader of that party -- who in this case happens to the be prime minister -- can be swapped out ad nauseum because there is no change in the actual ruling party.

Imagine if the US Speaker of the House was President. Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert, Nancy Pelosi, John Boehner, Paul Ryan, Nancy Pelosi, probably Kevin McCarthy.

That clown show is the UK.

Alternatively, look at Canada for how it generally works better. Tenure of last 5 PMs (1984-present):

  • Trudeau (Lib): 7 years (current) - 3 victories
  • Harper (Con): 9.5 years - 3 victories
  • Martin (Lib): 2 years - 1 victory
  • Chretien (Lib): 10 years - 3 victories
  • Mulroney (Con): 8.5 years - 2 victories

It's actually ironic, as the UK has a much better parliamentary democracy in terms of how free their MPs are. Canada is much more party-centralized, with the PM/leader able to control members. In the UK they are much more likely to do what they want, including sacking the leader. Both have pros and cons.

Things are still going smashingly.

The Tories are attempting to get a vote on a fracking bill and this is happening in Parliament's voting lobby:

Quote

I’ve never seen scenes like it at the entrance to a voting lobby. Tories on open warfare. Jostling and Rees Mogg shouting at his colleagues. Whips screaming at Tories. They are done and should call a general election. Two Tory whips dragging people in. Shocking.

Quote

Just watched the Deputy Prime Minister practically pick up a hesitant Tory MP and march him into the Government lobby. Astonishing.

Quote

BREAKING: Tory MPs now claiming that chief whip Wendy Morton and her deputy have both resigned - after fracking vote shambles. Total chaos engulfing govt.

Quote

Extraordinary stuff happening here during the vote on fracking which is apparently “not a confidence vote”.  I’ve just witnessed one Tory member in tears being manhandled into the lobby to vote against our motion to continue the ban on fracking

  • Commissar SFLUFAN changed the title to Update: Anarchy in the UK (Parliament...at least on the Tory side)

Also...at this point the next person won't (and can't) be any better; the only people who will be willing to take the job are those who simply want it on record that they were PM. The actual job is poisoned, now, as will be their career.

Really, if King Charles were smart he'd just call a new election, lol. It would immediately boost his numbers in popularity.
