Either way, I do agree with most of the negativity surrounding King of the Monsters... it had everything except good framing for the Monster Action..... Sure I could see that. But King of Monsters was fantastic. Its the one thing that King of Monsters got RIGHT My problem was that the camera always transitioned down to the human scale and what was happening to them just as the fighting was getting good... it didnt allow the fights to feel cohesive enough..... the midair Rodan vs Ghidorah battle had a great lead-ip only for it to transition to something else. Yeah, this. King of Monsters had great monster action, but it was all sound and fury signifying nothing. It was all so dizzying and in your face so constantly my wife and I just became bored. We really wanted to like it (the trailers were awesome) but yeah, it just ended up being a lame movie. I know Bob Chipman liked it, but I side with most critics on this one, who lambasted it (a 43% on RottenTomatoes). It doesn't surprise me audiences liked the movie more, but I just couldn't click into it. Gareth Edwards is simply a better director than Michael Dougherty was. I actually enjoyed Kong: Skull Island more than King of Monsters, probably would rank it around Godzilla 2014. On IMDb users give Godzilla 2014 a 6.4/10 while King of Monsters has a 6.0/10 (and Godzilla 2014 has 200,000 more votes, making the contrast even more stark), so @johnny and I are not alone in this. Kong: Skull Island has a 6.6/10. Adam Wingard (the guy doing Godzilla vs. Kong) is sometimes a great director (You're Next, The Guest) and is sometimes a bad director (Death Note) so we'll see if he can pull this off. Godzilla's relationship to humans is the whole point. Obviously, with 1954's Godzilla, it's most prominent in the form of a fable of man vs. the consequences of the development of the atomic bomb. Even when Godzilla's character transitioned to a more kid-friendly earthly protector, there were still pretty cool messages from time to time. Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster is one of the best movies from the Showa era because it shifts the danger to humanity from atomic energy to pollution. And it showed massive human costs in stark ways. Fast forward to 2016's Shin Godzilla, and it yet again anchors the story of man's (inadequate) response to Godzilla--this time as a natural or nuclear disaster a la Fukushima. Yeah, most of the movies are about fighting space aliens or whatever and the humans are kindof set pieces. But I believe there are flashes of brilliance all throughout Godzilla's run that MUST relate Godzilla to the humans. That's when Godzilla is truly the king. You're talking about themes... im talking about execution. Even the two recent Godzilla movies have strong ecological overtones dealing with Godzilla and the other titans restoring balance... that doesn't make the human scenes any less corny or boring. NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE is watching a Godzilla movie "for the message". Yes 1954's original Godzilla was a great allegory for the atomic bomb. The movies moved further and further away from serious science fiction as time went on. Nobody remembers what a Godzilla movie was trying to convey about man's place in the universe when they think back about these movies. What they remember is this Or this Or this Sometimes its ok for a movie to simply be entertaining, dumb fun. That's ultimately what a movie about giant monsters beating each other up should strive to be... mindless fun. I didn’t grow up a Godzilla fan and had never seen one of the movies until 2014’s Godzilla. seeing all of the monsters really didn’t do anything for me besides what we get in the film. i thought the fights were cool but overall it falls flat. also thought Kong Skull Island was just alright, but was one of the best movie posters ever. I hope that the rumors of Godzilla taking the dive so Kong can become “King” is not true... I will definitely make an effort to see this on the big screen...
