Unannounced Star Wars game appears to be coming soon

Quote

Electronic Arts has a new Star Wars game coming called Star Wars: Squadrons. The publisher is going to start teasing the new release from its EA Motive studio soon. But a leak on the Xbox website is spilling the details faster than a group of Bothan spies. This is the rumored Star Wars: Project Maverick that first leaked onto PlayStation Network in March. EA will likely have much more to say about this during its upcoming EA Play event on June 18.

According to sources familiar with the game’s production, Star Wars: Squadrons is an aerial/space combat game about piloting ships in head-to-head battles. It features a single-player campaign, but the main focus for Squadrons is on the multiplayer. The idea is to get players fighting against each other in team battles featuring iconic Star Wars vessels.

It needs to have straight up Rogue Squadron / Crimson Skies arcade controls, none of that wonky quasi-simulation shit that was in Battlefront II.

This would be really awesome if they took the old Xwing/Tie Fighter style gameplay, modernized it and added in multi-player.  I could really get behind that.

It's going to be far closer to Rogue Squadron than TIE Fighter. I would guess there is going to be some kind of auto-level for flight, and not much rolling. This will 100% be an arcade experience since it is going to be targeted at consoles, not PC.

Oh, and I will bet 100 space bucks that there will only be the following ships at launch:

X-Wing

A-Wing

Y-Wing

TIE Fighter

TIE Interceptor

TIE Bomber (or maybe TIE Avenger)

They will then release about 8 different DLCs for the prequels, ST, Rebels, etc.

We can only dream that they'll do something imaginative like have a "commander" mode, where you can pilot a star destroyer or cruiser and give your team directives and provide support functions like bombardments - along the lines of Battlefield 2-type strategy.

I've been waiting for an updated Rogue Squadron or Tie Fighter type of game.  Battlefront's flying feels like shit.  I want to be excited for this, but then this is EA.  And it's also a quick cash grab.  Such bullshit.  They've had the Star Wars license for 7 years and they have done jack shit with it.  They could have released all different kinds of Star Wars type games.  Is Disney also at fault there, too?  A license wouldn't necessarily have to be exclusive to one publisher, right?  Disney could have just taken pitches from developers who make all types of games.  Give us the Battlefronts.  Give us the KOTOR/RPG game.  Give us the immersive story-driven action game.  Give us the flying games.  Give us some new games!  What have we seen since 2013?  2 Battlefront games, Fallen Order, and a remaster of Jedi Knight.

Problem is any publisher that can afford the Star Wars license is gonna just look for mega-hits.

I don't remember X-Wing and Tie Fighter being all that simmy (like, say Falcon 3.0 or MS Flight Simulator were simmy) -- my recollection is that it was slightly more simmy than Wing Commander/Freespace 2 or the more recent Ace Combat games.

You could have multiple factions, from the different eras of Star Wars (and multiple tiers) -- you could have small ships, and "medium ships" akin to the heroes in Battlefront

i.e.

Galactic Empire

Tie/ln Fighter

Tie Advanced x1 (Vader's ship from a New Hope)

Tie Advanced v1 (The Inquisitor's Tie Fighter)

Tie Interceptor (Soontir Fel's ship)

Hero: VT-49 Decimator, Tie/D Defender (Phoenix Squadron's Ties)

Rebel Alliance

T-65 X-Wing

BTL-A4 Y-Wing

A/SF-01 B-Wing

RZ A-Wing

Hero: Millennium Falcon, VCX-100 light freighter

You could do similar load-outs for First Order/Resistance and Galactic Republic/Separatist.

It would be interesting if they could do larger scale battles, and include capital ships as well.

For whatever level of "sim" you ascribe to them, they were orders of magnitude more sim than any Rogue Squadron or Crimson Skies. Definitely more simmy than Ace Combat too.

The other unfortunate thing about space battles is that they end up devolving into just spinning in circles until somebody gets a target lock for missiles. Hopefully the combat zones have obstacles (say, the hulks of destroyed ships)...but also not too many. I can already see EA making the maps way too crowded or linear. I'm also afraid about the FOV. I'm assuming we're going to get 3rd person combat, which is fine for an arcadey game.

It's being developed by Motive I believe so think BF2 Starfighter mode as a starting point for what to expect.

It'a hard to be a sim about space combat. You can only work off of what we see in the movies. Based on that they are as sim as they can reasonably be.

My recollection was they were very similar to Ace Combat  7 (which I just played) -- makes we want to go back and play them.

I don't think you can make a modern multiplayer game with any staying power based on Rogue Squadron or Crimson Skies.

It will have staying power because you'll need to play for 20 hours to unlock proton torpedoes. All the newbies will be flying around unarmed Z-95 Headhunters while 13-year olds with free time and rich people will be flying Millenium Falcons with gold and pink skins, and sparkle exhaust.

Yes. Sim for the fantasy created in the movies. True space fighting Sim would be pretty boring. You can't actually have dogfighting aircraft in space. With no atmosphere there is no way for ships to maneuver in that way.

The RS games actually did a great job avoiding that and balancing objective design.  Okay, the occasional escort mission sucked, but other than that, it was good.  Most enemy ships being fodder probably helped with it not devolving into circle fights.

I’m expecting this to turn into more of a multiplayer focused thing.  Which would be a shame.

From the sounds of the leaks, there will be a "campaign" of 2-3 hours. So knowing EA, similar to Battlefield 4 or something, which was an on-rails tutorial. And yeah, while a multiplayer focus can be good, in this case I think people will tire of a 32-person dogfight over and over. Maybe they will surprise us with some fund team vs team missions (escort, base assault, etc).

If they don't take inspiration from Rogue One it will be disappointing, because I want to fly the hammerhead cruiser.

Today's trailer was cinematic only.

Geoff Keighley confirmed it will be 1 first person cockpit view game, with 5v5 multiplayer and a single player campaign.

PS4/XB1/PC -- No SeX/PS5 versions

October 2nd for $39.99

Edit:  Gameplay at the EA event on Thursday.

Edit:  It will take place shortly after RotJ.

So they don’t waste more money if it bombs.

And to ensure there is a HUGE potential user base to give it any hope of succeeding. I'm sure it will get patched for next gen shortly after next gen consoles launch.

The line about "five pilots, one squadron" makes me think this will be 5v5...which is not great. Anything less than 16v16 will be a pass from me...and honestly I was hoping for 32v32 at least as an option on PC.

I am glad it's taking place after ROTJ, however.

Keighly confirmed it is 5v5.

Also it supports VR on PS4 and PC.
