The Outer Worlds - Critique by NeverKnowsBest

I felt misled by the initial reaction of the game, mostly by the gaming press, which I defend more than most people do.

The game feels like a cheap shell of a fallout game. I didn’t hate it by any means, but I think mediocre is an accurate descriptor. If I could go back in time I would tell myself to wait until it was $20 or less.

It was the right game at the right time. It didn't have to be good. It just had to work lol.

It released at a point when people were frustrated with Bethesda for fucking up their own winning formula, EA was shitting all over everyone with their lootbox bs, and Ubi was releasing the broken mess that was Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

To back up @Xbob42 's point, even a stripper with a peg leg can look good if all the other ones trip and break their necks trying to get up on stage.

I've randomly taken to hating this game for no reason at all as I've decided there's something vaguely cunty about its existence without ever having played it. I'm glad you all hate it.

Thank you for being sympathetic to our cause. However, I recommend getting it for a dollar one gamepass so you can hate it even more.

This is my feeling as well.  The reception of this game probably had far more to do with Fallout 76, than this games own merits.

Then you throw in the fact it's now a 1st Party Studio, so Xbox Fanboys are going to hype it up as being the greatest thing ever since its made my an Xbox Studio.

Hopefully with Microsoft bankrolling it, they can afford to take a few more chances and mix it up a bit. They were a studio living game-to-game so it's understandable they'd play it safe while gambling with their own money.

You should still get game pass doe, for your amazing PC you have.

I have the free 3 month trial (or whatever it is) that @cusideabelincoln gave me. I started replaying Prey instead of trying something new because that game totally rules.

No wait, I tried Bloodstained and deleted it within the first 15 minutes.

Bloodstained is a fantastic game. Starts off really basic, then gets completely fucking retarded in the best way.

I'd spin it up again if I were you. You'll know you're getting to the good part when you're basically breaking the entire game with your OP powers.

Honestly, it's the absolutely vile art direction and overall look that did it. It actively depressed me, seriously.

I've played Symphony, Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow and so on, which I all loved, and this came off like an infinitely uglier, bad rehash. THAT BEING SAID...I'm sure the gameplay is actually fun and I will give it another shot eventually.

My feelings on the game haven't really changed much. I don't think it's bad if it's what people enjoy. There are genres and subgenres of everything that I don't love that other people do, and if something is a pretty good entry in one of those subgenres, that's probably enough.

Personally, I fell a bit out of love with this particular subgenre long before most. Morrowind came out in 2002 and I was astonished. By the time Fallout 4 came out 13 years later, the novelty had largely worn off. The rhythm of the gameplay, the detached feeling of navigation, the unexciting combat systems, the unnatural interactions, the constant menu navigation, and all the assembled jank pulled me out of what is unquestionably an impressive game. I realize they're not all in the same genre, but when Assassin's Creed came out and showed such incredible fluidity of movement, and Uncharted had new levels of filmmic intensity, Rockstar iterated on their vision of open world gameplay in GTA4 and RDR, and Bioware was working through Mass Effect, the Bethesda model of RPGs had lost so much of its luster to me.

That's not so much a critic of Fallout 4 or Outer Worlds as it is an observation as to how I reacted to those games. Outer Worlds is a much smaller, but perfectly fine entry into that Bethesda style of RPG that we've been seeing since Morrowind. Some genres don't really evolve too much, and that's fine. I don't play many fighting games, but I don't think anyone's really complaining so much about the formula for the latest Mortal Kombat. It seems plenty of people are perfectly happy with that type of game. Myself, I feel like they are stuck in time, beholden to a success born out of incredible innovation, but unwilling to attempt another similar leap.

Well it certainly looks better than it could have looked. They cleaned up the poop!

(PS Don't even try to look at Mighty No. 9)
