Is the American Left calling him a racist though? Who? Has a single prominent Democrat said a single word about any of this? I don't feel like any of the big Lefty news sources covered this at all. Why would they? It's not even news. Literally nothing newsworthy happened. I feel like this is a debate the right is having with themselves. Quote

ort Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 OVERHEARD AT FOX... Okay, so what's the big news of the day... Well, republicans in congress are fighting like hell against a bill that something like 75% of Americans strongly support... OK, perfect, so let's run with "Liberals are cancelling Dr. Seuss!!" 2 Quote

Like at all. Like, ever... I mean, I had to look at this and try to decide if it was a real Ben Garrison cartoon or a bad parody... and I'm still not 100% sure and that's a bad sign. What is he even trying to say here? It's just like they are twitching uncontrollably and screaming about about socialism, immigrants and cancel culture. Quote

Once he actually tried it he realized he liked it and he'd been a fool, and Sam-I-Am was only trying to help. I know "you didn't understand the source material" is a common complaint in political cartoons but it's especially amusing given that the entire point is supposed to be in defense of Seuss and his works. I mean, give me a break with the faux outrage. Just stop republicans. It's flipping ridiculous... Trump said like 5-10 worse and/or more shocking things every single week he was in office... and now they are pretending like this is some sort of big deal? Save it, you dishonest hucksters. No one is buying it. Quote

Uaarkson Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 Pepe Le Pew being rapey is like, last century news. Quote
Guest Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 Pepe Le Pew is played up as gross even in the cartoons from the 40s. He’s a joke at the expense of French male stereotypes. He literally stinks. Quote
ort Posted March 6, 2021 Posted March 6, 2021 Yeah, and don't even get started on Speedy Gonzales. Quote

I can still see the objection to it on the basis that it plays the sexual harassment for laughs even if the laughs are at the expense of the harasser. But it feels off to suggest that Le Pew is meant to be a positive example to boys, even within his original time and context. But also not a fight I’d feel particularly compelled to fight *shrug* Quote

Anathema- Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 For a lot of folks they saw themselves in speedy. It less about offense and more appropriation. Quote

From what I understand, when the shorts got dubbed into Spanish, that trait wasn't carried over. Bottom line is, I'm fine with them putting this disclaimers in front of old cartoons, but I think outright banning the cartoons is a step too far. Quote
chakoo Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I always thought dr Seuss was liberal trash for preaching environmentalism to children. Can we liberals go after beavis & butthead just to see Christian conservative moms go ape shit over trying to protect them. Quote

ort Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I think it was more the other mice like Slow Poke Rodriguez who were the really negative stereotypes. Speedy was always played as a super-competent badass. It's still a show written by white people, and voice acted by white people about a bunch of poor Mexican stereotypes played for laughs and turned all the way up to 11. I also want to add that while I recognize all of these as super problematic, they still make me laugh and I still have a special place in my heart for all these goofy ass, racist violent cartoons I grew up on... Greatoneshere Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I'm glad Mexicans are trying to appropriate Speedy Gonzalez but I always felt he was racist even when I was a kid. Yeah, he was cool, but like, just look at the character. Quote
