I see the sentiment on giant bomb and specifically Jeff Grubb about the price where they keep saying, the price isn't a factor, it's worth it, you'll buy it anyway etc. But I do think there is a barrier there that makes $70 a tough pill to swallow. I think I already said this but it is easy for a reviewer to say "This is worth $70" when they don't have to pay any money to get the game.

I agree. I personally feel like a lot of critics are shilling this game a tad much especially when most of them are claiming that it’s easily worth $70, and that its price shouldn’t even be a factor. I can only see that somewhat applying to people who haven’t played the original game, but not to people who have.

I could accept the $70 price tag a little more if it was in fact an actual remake like it’s been marketed as, but it literally looks identical to the original game just with improved graphics. That’s not really a remake IMO, it’s a fancier remaster. They’re basically charging $50 more for the same game with a Last of Us Part II skin on it.

So far, every review I watched/read seems to be scoring this with a mindset of “if you’ve never played the original or remaster”, despite noting it’s existence. In other releases like this, it always seems that reviewers are often focused on “we already played it” to drop the score down (unless it’s practically a new game, like the recent RE remakes), with this there’s a constant “if you’ve never played it before…”. I don’t know if it’s a “because it’s a major publisher + major dev” thing or what, but like… I dunno. IGN even complains about them not adding the improvements to combat and atmosphere from Part 2 and still 9/10 it (again with the “if you haven’t played part 1 yet!” note).
I don’t mean to seem overly negative on this, as TLoU is one of my fav PS3/360 gen games, but that full price for what’s essentially just a reskin is kinda shitty, and it legitimately seems like reviewers are flat out ignoring that for the first time ever.

Tinfoil hat cynicism time but I will say that I think Naughty Dog also gets brownie points for their Good Guys Dev shtick. The Sony Twitter was full of snippets of "we worked so hard on this, we're so passionate", it always comes off as a marketing bulwark against overt criticism to me. But they're so passionate, how dare you diminish their work style. But the way I see is that as a player, I frankly don't care how the sausage is made and I've seen WAY lower profile and budget efforts deliver a whole lot more without needing a four minute video explaining just how passionate they are about the fact that Joel now goes into his pants-shitting crab walk animation more smoothly than ever.

The more I've read the reviews, the more it kind of blows my mind how much language surrounding this I'm seeing without really weighing that literally nothing was changed about the game's most obviously archaic and PS3-tech-restrictive elements. On top of that, many reviews seem to forget that the original came with a juicy multiplayer game almost that apparently is still well alive and thriving that got axed wholesale. All this while charging more than the sequel. The argument that this version was necessary for accessibility options seems kind of sus me as well. So you're being the Good Guyz by charging people who were previously unable to play your game due to physical limitations a premium full price to do so? There's no upgrade path or maybe patch for the Remastered Edition for accessibility options?

TLoU is a pretty great game and a classic obviously but I think this "remake" and the motives and ball-dropping around it come off as bullshit to me. On top of it, re-read the announcement write-up:

Quote

A total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay mechanics, improved controls and expanded accessibility options. Feel immersed in improved environmental storytelling, effects, facial animations, and enhanced exploration and combat.

That's a whole lot of words purposefully chosen to be neither here nor there but implying a lot to those that expected them to expand on the original and bring it more in line with the sequel. I'm not saying people shouldn't have fun with it and enjoy the prettier version and all that but I do feel that "what could've been" sting like with Resident Evil 3 Remake where it's like...alright well, that was the one shot they were gonna take and well. Like how the fuck did they see, for example, that Bill's city school bus combat arena with their shiny new coat of paint and thought that didn't look positively hamfisted in contrast with super-modern graphics. It's a PS3 hardware limitations level design. I think the reason Demon's Souls remake ended up working much better is because that game was instead going above and beyond in the level design and struggling and it opened it up in a way while TLoU's level design and combat arenas were already criticized as basic and restrictive almost a decade ago. It's still Manhunt and they had a chance to expand that.

I think that "greedy sony" has been getting a pass in the media as of late. $70 games, their $10 upgrades more recently the price hike of the Playstation. But the excuse always is, "Well they're going to buy it so it doesn't matter" but to me all of these things add up.

Yeah I think a lot of this is to make you forget that there was some crunch culture years ago and a lot of the staff didn't want to work on this game, I think they left the studio or were assigned to something else or something (I forgot how it went) So this is all the men in black flash stick thing.

At the end of the day @Greatoneshere hit the nail on the head. Sony is really trying to push their movie / tv show tie ins along with releases of games. They did it for Uncharted (didn't they?) doing it for this and will be doing it for Twisted Metal probably. At least for Twisted Metal it should be a new game not just a re-release.

How is the Metro series btw? I thought about buying 2033 Redux...if that's the first one?

I only played the 3rd which is obviously Exodus. It got enhanced for the XSX and PS5 and looks amazing! The game itself is terrific and very atmospheric. I'm close to the end I think but it's been a great ride!

The digital foundry video is, as always, a very detailed breakdown of how the graphics have improved, along with some interesting looks into how things like the AI have and have not improved.

I'll be happy to replay this one, but I don't feel any need to rush. My suspicion is that the price won't stay at $70 for too long. If it's not cheaper by the holidays, it'll probably be on sale before the series comes out next year.

This game was probably made because they saw what happened to Witcher 3 sales after The Witcher series hit netflix.  I think it spiked to the highest ever concurrent players on Steam, Xbox/PS and topped Sales charts for awhile, years after the game launched.  CD Project Red didn't sell some updated $60 full price version to take advantage of it, they sold whatever was out, probably a $20-$30 copy at the time.

Sony figured, why sell the $20 Last of Us 2 Remastered when we could maybe get $70 per head that might come over.  If they offered some kind of upgrade path for currrent owners I could maybe understand, but to charge $70 for a game that has its multiplayer cut, is a step too far for what seems to be graphical  upgrades.

I may eventually get it on a deep discount, but even then I doubt it as I don't have time to replay old games really.

They’re probably going to keep it at $70 until the HBO series comes out, and announce The Last of Us Part II remaster for PS5 close to when the HBO series comes out and sell it for $70 as well when it does. :p

I'm so conflicted right now. I haven't played this since 2014 so it would be kind of a fresh experience for me.

I'm off tomorrow and I will be so tempted to buy it I just know it. $70 fuckin dollars is what is making me second guess it all together. Fuck me I bet I play this tomorrow. :/

I didn’t realize that it’s been so long since you played it, I didn’t even play it for the first time until in 2016 when I got my PS4. I’ve played it a couple of more times since then, most recently in 2020 right before The Last of Us Part II came out. I should be ready to play it again by the time that I get a PS5, and since I don’t plan on getting a PS5 until Grand Theft Auto VI comes out the remake should be $20 by then.

If you’re really in the mood to play it again right now and think that the improved visuals will make the experience worth $70 then you should go ahead and get it, but if you can wait until November there’s really no doubt that it will be on sale for $50 or less Black Friday.

I decided I'm buying it tomorrow. I know I'll absolutely love it and the visuals will be stunning. Add this to the games I'm currently playing lol

Ok, so I played for 3 hours. I haven't played the 1st one in 8 years so I don't remember much at all. So this is basically a fresh experience for me.

The visuals are absolutely stunning and from what I'm seeing is that they improved the allies AI, too. Ellie and Tess never once got in my way or unrealistically ran out in plain sight for the enemy to see. I distinctly remember that being a big issue from the original.

I'm extremely impressed with the voice acting and facial detail and emotion they show. The gameplay is fantastic and I don't miss any of the newer moves etc from part 2. It controls and plays great. This is a much tighter story than part 2 which I love. It's just flat out an incredible video game. I could write so much more about how great this game is.

I'm taking a small break now and playing more soon.

I want to make it clear that those that recently played part 1 or remember a lot from it, I wouldn't pay $70 for this. Yes, the visuals are mind blowing and the AI has been improved, but that still doesn't warrant the price for this.

I played 7 hours total today. What an incredible game holy hell.

I'm playing in fidelity mode and it runs at 40fps. I want all the detail I can get. I did try performance mode and it's a rock solid 60fps but you lose some resolution.

I literally had to force myself to stop playing this.

The game does look good, but not a huge improvement from Part II, so it makes me wonder how insane Part III will look after Naughty Dog gets more time to learn the ins and outs of the PS5.

You are correct, sir. I played part 2 today and it's comparable visually. This remake looks better than 2 but not by much. It's the facial details and emotions on the characters faces that is so impressive.
