Demon's Souls Remake OT - You Died, update: reviews from OpenCritic posted

For me the progress is in learning the various encounters within levels, just like in old sidescrollers. They're all beautifully designed tricks and traps and like a 180 from modern game design. DeS is more like a Ghouls N Ghosts in a more modern format to me.

I don't know what it is but I'm bored to tears by cinematic, open world this that but let me repeat and master and explore the shit out of a level like the dreaded 5-2 in DeS and I can't tear myself away.

I’m on 1-2 and the bridge is just kicking my ass. With all the archers and the knight that charges you. The dragon at your back. I made it once past the archers and the 2nd knight. I then forgot to eat some health, got up the stairs and got hit with an arrow and died. I wanted to throw my controller through my tv. What am I doing wrong here?

I absolutely love the atmosphere of this game. The gameplay is really good. I really  love the story and basically non-existent dialogue or frequent cut scenes. The environment really does such a good job of telling the story (kinda reminds me of ICO/SOTC in that regard). The sound is fantastic. It truly feels like a next-gen game.

but...I cannot deal with punishment factor. Having to constantly run back is just ruining it for me. I really don’t know how you guys can stick with it and not get both completely frustrated and bored.  This game is all about repetition. Being someone who has never replayed a game in my  life once I’ve beaten it, I think this is where the game is going to lose me.

Umbasa.

Okay, even as someone who played a couple Souls games prior to this, 1-2 felt like a big spike in difficulty compared to 1-1. The beginning of the game felt harsh for me, and I found myself farming a bit and felt I was going backward, but it's not as hard as it looks. It's hard, but not that hard to the point where you'll be farming all the time. Here are some tips:

  • There are times when you can avoid a powerful enemy. As said in another post, there's an alternate route you can use to avoid at least one of the bridges. And if you helped that guy in 1-1, you can help him again in 1-2, and he can take out some ground enemies for you.
  • There are five archstones. You're on 1-2, but the way they all work, each stage of a world is harder than the previous. 1-1/2-1/3-1/4-1/5-1 are the easiest of theirs, and then X-2 is harder. So you don't HAVE to try 1-2 right now. See how you feel about 2-1. Or 3-1.
    • On that note, if the dragon were dead, it might be easier for you. So maybe don't bother with him yet.
  • Each world has its own dangers, so the most beneficial armor for you may change depending on the world you're in. AND how hard a world is may depend on what your build is. If you're a magician, you're gonna one of the worlds easier and better for you than others. If you're a melee character with piercing weapons, you'll likely find another world much easier.
    • Each world also has its own benefits -- its own people you can rescue who may be VERY helpful, item drops that work better for certain characters (if you're having time finding spice, maybe another world has more of it, for example), etc.
  • If you want a way to get a feel for the level without risking your souls, maybe plop down a blue eye stone marker and wait for someone to summon you for help. It'll give you the opportunity to co-op, to learn the enemies' attacks, and find shortcuts from good players.
  • Don't feel frustrated. EXPECT to die. It's okay! As hopeless as it can feel, you will never get yourself to a point where it's impossible to beat the game. The game isn't cheap, so you'll never feel like you're hopefully outnumbered because it's meticulous with its enemy placement and level design.

Its kind of that the enemies are puzzles themselves, instead of using typical environmental puzzles in a game like zelda. That's what I love about them.

So I finally cleared it all. Hands shaking like a leaf. I’m standing at the fog wall. And to the left is a locked door I didn’t notice before. There ‘s a bloody message stating “find the key”. So I’m thinking - ok, I know there’s 2 archers upstairs that I died to stupidly bc I didn’t eat some herbs. The key must be up there. And I bet it unlocks a shortcut so I can bypass most of the bridge as I’m sure beyond the fog wall is a boss.

nope. No key anywhere. Go through the fog wall and yep, it’s a boss. The tower knight who lights me the fuck up. So now I am all the way back at the beginning again. Lol.

for real. Y’all a bunch of fucking masochists.

My first Souls game was Demon Souls on the PS3. I played the game for probably an hour and thought it was the stupidest thing I'd ever played. Didn't touch another Souls until either Bloodborn or Dark Souls 3. Trust me I get it, there are some bosses where you just have no idea what to do, I beat the spider boss purely just by healing through it, I didn't know that you had to run all the way back to avoid his oil/flame thing. Don't feel bad if you have to look up strategies to kill bosses. I do it, a lot of my friends do it, and just because you know the strategy doesn't mean its always easy to pull off. It just takes time, patience, and getting use to the gameplay.

I would honestly avoid boss strategies as much as you can. With a couple exceptions, many of the bosses you can hide from and try to figure out, including the Tower Knight, by looking at his patterns.

For many of the bosses in Demon's Souls specifically, there is a much easier way to take them down than their appearance would indicate.

Oh for sure, going in dark is a much better experience. I was just trying to say don't be ashamed if you need to look up a boss.

Especially tower knight. Hes a very simple boss once you figure him out.

Spoiler

Stay behind, avoid his aoe.

Oh, and kill the monsters upstairs first.

Spoiler

I didn't even know the first time that if you attack his ankles enough, he falls and his head is super vulnerable. That never happened my first time; I just attacked one of his ankles repeatedly until he died.

Then the second time, I used magic on his back, thinking that was the trick, but I still didn't understand that hitting his ankles made it easy.

Has anyone seen any deals for this? I haven't seen ANY sales for this game yet. Seems like every other PS5 has gone on sale at one time or another except for this one.

I have no idea about how the other PS5 games fared/are faring so take this with a grain of salt but when I was looking up a physical copy two weeks ago, or whenever that was, this one was nowhere in like a 100 mile radius while most other stuff was in stock. Might be selling like hot cakes?

Well when I tried to buy a physical copy at launch it was sold out... but the guy at the Target I went to said that they only got like five copies in anyway. So while it may be sold out, I don't think there's that many physical copies out there in the wild.

Really cleaned up tonight and beat Maneaters as well finally. Assholes.

Working on 1-4 now and just need to take down the final bosses for worlds 2 and 4.

The graphics in this game continue to impress me every time I play. Some of the detail and atmosphere in 1-4 is amazing.

It's some good stuff. I played more NG+ last week and I'm pretty sure I'm up to level 100+?

Graphically, Bluepoint are technical wizards. This is a stunning looking game. World 4 in particular for me is pretty amazing, from the sounds of the flying enemies to the entire atmosphere of the world. Wait until you experience the final boss of World 4 if you think the graphics have been impressive so far.

I'm at...around 63 to 65 I think? Level, I mean.

I had a guy invade me in 1-4 last night and we ended up not fighting each other but instead doing ridiculous gestures/poses at each other from dramatic vantage points for like 15 minutes. Parapets across the street from each other and stupid shit like that. Then he sent himself home. What a nice invader!

Anyway, yeah, I'm about to tackle the Dragon God and the storm...king (?) tonight I think to clean up more. I want to focus on 1-4 and not just dip my toes in, that's one of my favorite stages. I'm still so-so on some of their decisions but the more I've played the game, the more I think for whatever they didn't necessarily nail, there's always one other thing they fucking completely nailed. The re-design of the Maneaters is way better than the original for me for example.

And one tiny detail that somehow adds a lot to the combat feel for me is the way enemies drop their swords with those heavy clangs...something about it really sells the sword fighting much more to me with that addition and it's such a seemingly small detail. There's something about the overall marriage of animation 'weight' and the rather meaty EQ on the weapon and armor sounds that makes the combat feel more weirdly realistic than I've ever felt in a game...and in Demon's Souls.

YOU SHOULD HAVE SAVED THE VIDEO OF THE INVADER! I love shit like that. One time I summoned two people to help me with a Bloodborne boss, and two of us just started screaming at each other. At a certain point after the other guy screamed one last time, I did the Mercy pose and fell to the ground, and then he did a victory pose. Stuff like that makes multiplayer hysterical.

Lemme know what you think of the Dragon God and Storm King music and design. I LOVE the music in both; they truly feel like monumental moments to me, but I've not played the original and didn't have any expectation.

Actually, the OST is the only legit swing-and-a-miss for me honestly. I've said it before I'm sure but I by no means think the new OST is objectively bad. It's great music. Just the original tracks are very much more memorably eccentric. It's kind of like how RE2 Remake replaced the original X-Files inspired OST in the main hall etc. with something objectively maybe more mature and modern sounding but in the process lost a lot of the music's character to me.

HOWEVER, I'll report back on both those fights if I get into it tonight. And yeah, I also love the dumb posing battles after, or before, boss fights. I actually never looked up how to save videos or anything on PS5 yet, I never knew on PS4 either. I know it automatically saves some clips when you get a trophy so I know I have the ends of boss fights but that's about it.

Oh I can happily tell you ...I said whoever designed the thunderstorms in breath of the wild needs punched square in the face lol I was gone. I learned that place was the absolute shits very quickly. Gone without a word.

Edit: actually I do think I got a little note and it said something along the lines of inciting violence
