I liked that bit. The mechanics they showed off are pretty standard in VR, but there usually isn't an in game reason for why it works. It's nice that they built one into this.

 

 

 

Also, not sure who saw the minimum requirements, but they're significant:

Processor: Core i5-7500 / Ryzen 5 1600
Memory: 12 GB RAM
Graphics: GTX 1060 / RX 580 - 6GB VRAM

I started watching those and decided I'll just play it. Teleportation isn't my favorite, but as of now there aren't many better options. Everything else continues to look like it's setting a new standard for narrative VR games. Really need to get my Oculus working again on my new PC.

Each video shows a different movement type. Teleportation looks like it breaks the immersion big time and would make the game super easy.

I thought continuous looked the best and then shift is probably a good compromise between the two (teleportation and continuous)

 

Not sold on the new Alyx voice actor but looking back the old one wasn't super amazing either.  🤷

Cool, I didn't watch each one. I'll probably start with shift, hopefully that one strikes the right compromise between immersion and what my stomach can take.

TWD:S&S is this way and I feel like it works fairly well. They have some motion sickness settings too which they vignette your FOV while moving.

 

Teleporting I find to be more difficult because you usually have to teleport, recognize your new spot and turn (if necessary) to face where you want to be. All in real time while things are coming/shooting at you isn't ideal.

- They're fans of the gloves and the small things they let you do. Not revolutionary, but still very, very useful and intuitive
- Feels very much like a Half-Life game still and they were impressed how that gameplay translated well to VR
- They thought the story was serviceable but really liked the writing.
- Beautiful world that gives you a chance to explore - slower pace than traditional FPS games, but very thrilling when the battles do arrive

I jumped in for a few minutes because I couldn't help myself, even though I do need to do some work. The things that stuck out the most to me in the introductory minutes of the game are:

-The graphics are great. Not "good for VR," which is usually like a mid-tier console game, but legitimately excellent. I suppose you get a very good sense from the gameplay videos, but seeing it in VR is really something else. The character models in particular stand out.

-The level of detail in the world is at another level. The graphical fidelity really makes all the difference, but if it was a barren wasteland it would be all for not. That's very much not the case here. It's dense and detailed beyond most games, and with nearly everything being interactive, it's amazing.

-I have a launch Oculus Rift and I haven't used it in a while, and I really wish I had a HMD with a much higher resolution display.

-It's weird that a Half Life game and a VR game has the player character talking. It's not bad, but it's weird.

Yeah, I can agree with all of this. Played for about an hour and a half/two hours and its just a series of "holy shit" moments and visuals. I've been fortunate enough to play a lot of custom VR stuff in Japan and the coolest thing I played was the untethered shooting game at Club Sega. While obviously I don't have the luxury of fully free walking, as a home experience this is nothing short of amazing.

Half-Life: Alyx Behind the Scenes, Part 1: How Valve Found Its New Alyx (USgamer)

Today marks the release of Half-Life: Alyx, a virtual reality-exclusive title and the series' first installment in over 12 years. This being Valve's first full-length single-player game in close to a decade, on top of being a Half-Life title, means this is the first time that some relatively recent hires have had a chance to make their mark. It's also the chance for some longtime Valve employees to take on a more significant role in Half-Life.

 

Half-Life: Alyx was in development at Valve for about four years, during which Erik Wolpaw and Chris Remo were only around for about half of the time. Wolpaw, who joined Valve as a writer in the mid-2000s, left the company shortly after the earliest VR experiments that led to Half-Life's return got under way. Remo and his comrades from Campo Santo—the developers of Firewatch—all joined Valve in 2018, when Alyx was well into production. Wolpaw then came back to Valve as a contractor later that year.

 

Remo, a designer and programmer on Alyx, remembers playing the original Half-Life games as a fan; Wolpaw helped out on the Half-Life 2 Episodes, but those were still mainly the domain of original series writer Marc Laidlaw (Wolpaw also, of course, wrote for Portal and Left 4 Dead). Half-Life: Alyx is Remo's first Half-Life game as a developer, and it's the first time a team has taken over from Laidlaw, who announced his retirement from Valve in 2016. Wolpaw, Jay Pinkerton, and Campo Santo's Sean Vanaman worked out Alyx's story together.

 

In the past year, Remo says Half-Life: Alyx has become "almost a whole new game." USgamer had the opportunity to chat with Remo and Wolpaw ahead of Alyx's release. In this installment, we talk broadly about coming back to Half-Life, designing for VR, and the fate of other projects like Double Fine's Psychonauts 2 (which Wolpaw wrote for) and Campo Santo's on-hiatus In the Valley of Gods.

How does this control on an OG Vive?

Controls just fine WMR controllers, though the original Vive wands don't have a joystick on them so that might complicate things a bit.

 

Got a good 3-4 hours playtime and gonna call it for the night. Physically takes a bit of a toll being in VR for extended periods of time, not just the weight of the headset but standing and holding the controllers in kind of an awkward position for so long has given me some soreness.

 

The replacement of Merle Dandridge as Alyx was unfortunate but the new lady does a good job. The loss of Robert Guillaume as Eli is a much bigger hit.

Valve has succeeded at just about every goal it must have had for this project. The only thing left is whether hardcore fans will be willing to buy, and use, a virtual reality headset in order to learn what happens next in the world of Half-Life.

 

The good news is that those who do will experience what is likely the best VR game released to date.
