The Tale of the Princess Kaguya: 9/10

Based on a 10th century story The Tale of Princess Kaguya is another Studio Ghibli masterpiece and Isao Takahata's final film. It's the story of a woodcutter who finds a girl in a bamboo shoot and raises her to become a princess. While the father seems very enthusiastic about making his daughter a princess it turns out that being a princess might not be all it's cracked up to be. It's a well told and poignant tale. However, the show stopper in this movie is the art style. It's like moving ink painting. Every frame of the movie you could hang on your wall as a beautiful portrait. Which begs the question, what the heck were the academy awards smoking when they gave best animated feature to Big Hero 6 over this? The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a classic work of art and Big Hero 6 is a long forgotten movie. As far as non Miyazaki films go this one hangs up there as one of the best.

Writer/director Isao Takahata's Studio Ghibli output is sparse compared to Hayao Miyazaki but all of them are next level gems: Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, My Neighbors the Yamadas and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.  Great, beautiful film.

Shazam Fury of the Gods

Rough, visual aesthetic was inconsistent.. the tone cant resolve itself… Plus when the evil creatures invade the city the gymnastics they do to convey threat but not have anyone die is very obvious and cringy.. they needed a miracle shield helicarrier.. it was bad

Tetsuo: The Iron Man: 7/10

I think this usually appears on those "weird" movie lists and yeah it is pretty dang weird. It's not very straightforward either in terms of narrative but you can kind of piece together what happened. I guess there's a guy known as the fetishist who puts a piece of metal in his leg, then he goes crazy and gets hit by a car. Then THIS is where things wet weird, he's like a little metal guy in a pod who infects other people and turns them into scrap metal. It's certainly unique and has some cool prosthetic effects, it's like The Fly meets Captain EO. Just kind of like a long weird ass music video.

The Dictator: 6/10

I wanted to see this movie because of the 911 scene which was moderately amusing. Moderately amusing is a good description for this movie because that's what it is. Sacha Baron Cohen plays a dictator and it seems to be a lot of Borat jokes but less surprising. Also, The Dictator isn't as likable as Borat which makes it harder to care. It's a scripted movie so maybe it lacks that improv surprise that Borat brings. A lot of the jokes you can see a mile away because you've already seen them. In the end the thing that keeps you watching is the cutesy love story I suppose but again that's nothing groundbreaking either. The Dictator has some good jokes but in the end you'd be better off watching one of the Borat movies.

IN THE HEIGHTS (4K/ATMOS) 3.5/5

First thing I gotta say is the Oscars need an award for choreography for dance/fighting or hell both added. What a cool looking movie with some great choreographic dance routines, with the pool being a standout. Looking new and cool but classic nod to musicals of old. What I love seeing in my musicals (yeah I like them) is when the rhythm of the music is set with the actions on screen, and a good chunk of them do a pretty damn good job syncing together. Also being LMM first musical, it was cool hearing his sound but a lot of Larson’s R.E.NT. rhythm/sound. So now naturally I gotta find the time to watch his Larson film Tick, Tick, Boom. Now I did find the movie a bit slow, and they aren’t songs I will know off by heart, unlike some Hamilton songs, but will probably catch myself humming. The disc looked great, sound thumped nicely but needed to up my receiver to get to my comfortable enveloping hearing zone. Atmos just made the music sound fuller, and a nice neighbourhood atmosphere when walking the streets. So fans of LMM or musicals, it’s an easy recommend.

Fist of Fury AKA The Chinese Connection: 8/10

I haven't seen a lot of Bruce Lee movies. Enter the Dragon of course but can't think of anything beyond that. The story is Bruce Lee's fighting school teacher has died and he, Chen (Bruce Lee), is very upset and also suspects foul play. It just so happens those evil Japanese are in Shanghai and decide to talk trash about the teacher. So Chen becomes angry, furious you might even say, and goes to their dojo and kicks their asses. But turns out these evil Japanese dudes are shitty and decide to retaliate. An interesting twist of history here the Japanese are bad and friends with Russians while the Chinese are the nice peaceful folks 🤔

In any case it's basically a revenge story with some pretty good fighting. Hard to believe any of these dudes stand a chance against him though. Also, Bruce Lee proves it's ok to fight dirty. A lot of nut shots and even biting. Don't be too proud to go for the crotch shots folks! The ending leaves a bit to be desired but overall the ride is fun.

ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE (4K/ATMOS) 3.25/5

Well I’m stuck in my room dealing with gout, and so I have time to watch some movies again. Well a movie and it has things I liked and things I didn’t. I think I liked this darker tone but ZS style is destruction, Michael Bay light. Like the WW opening hostage scene and blowing out a fucking building wall for one guy loading a gun. Then jumping up through the building to throw away the bomb and not the big opening you made killing a dude. Let alone the dangerous rubble flying outside onto pedestrians and police. I like the expanded story for Victor/Cyborg and had the real heart/touching moments in this story. Gotta say I like Affleck at Batman/Bruce, and surprised that Flash wasn’t in that much of the movie. The story is also a bit disjointed because of these random character introductions out of no where, and sort of a cliffhanger ending too. Plus the movie could have been half an hour less had they played at full speed the entire time, but every scene needed a slow-mo moment. In comparison to what we got from Joss Whedon, this is essentially the same movie for the most part. Now just darker in tone, more slow-mo, more hero/villain cameos, but ends on a dark possible future. We’ll never see how that could of gone and in some ways I don’t wanna see it anyways. The DC universe just tried to do a Marvel in half the time and movies and failed. So let’s see where Gunn goes with his take, because the world could use a little colourful hope again. As for the disc itself it looks good, but odd watching it in 4:3 and overall it didn’t work for me. Some nice moments used with the framing but odd aspect for most of the rest of the movie. Looks overall clean on my NX7 setup, but the Atmos track really shines. Lots of use with the overhead sounds like the parademons and random debris flying about. So I guess I’m glad I’ve seen both but it’s not something I would need to see again anytime soon either. Rent or stream, but don’t need to buy.

THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE (4K/ATMOS) 2.5/5

There is barely a plot here. It was more of a kids eye candy and nostalgia moments for the adults who grew up with Nintendo. I like the little Easter eggs and in jokes scattered around, but it wasn’t still wasn’t much. The 4K disc looks amazing and sound wasn’t too far behind either, but a 3D might of upped my enjoyment factor. Tons of scenes screamed 3D and Illumination Studios is one of the few who still take full advantage of the format. If RSM got the rights for a release, I still don’t know if would be enough for me to see this movie again. Feels like Wario would be the next big bad they could exploit.

DUNE (3D/DTS-HDMA+NEURAL:X) 3.25/5

This felt like Game of Thrones in that we have so many characters/families/mythology that needed to be kept in order. It was a bit slow as well, but everything is setup for Part 2. The cast was great, SFX good and so was the score. It isn’t a soundtrack I would seek out to listen to alone, but it really worked nicely setting up that world atmosphere. The 3D was all about depth and separation, and really stood out with the many ships flying or just too the size on the ground. Plus a stellar few scenes when they jump to an outer space shot of the fucking mammoth ship above the surface. Sound was good but that centre dialog was a bit low in volume and needed a slight boost. The ending had me interested enough to see part 2, and maybe improve my overall enjoyment of this first half itself. Hopefully I get a 3D release when it has its release on video

BLACK WIDOW (3D/DTS-HDMA+NEURAL:X) 3.25/5

Nice seeing my Marvel film with the expanded imax scenes included. It was the last disc released with it, now with IMAX being an exclusive thing on Disney+ (but rumour is that GOTG3 will include it for its disc release) Anyways I guess this took place shortly after a Civil War and a good reason to keep the cameos out. It was an ok Marvel entry that was really a big lead in for the series Hawkeye. David Harbour steels every scene he’s in, and can’t wait to see more of him. Intriguing that he mentioned fighting Captain America in the 80’s. Anyways the sound was good but Disney has really snipped the balls out of the LFE work for my subs. The 3D looked good and sharp, few cool in your face pop outs, and that expanded imax kick for for some scenes were great to see again. So not bad, but not their best either.

  • I Shot Jesse James 3/5 I like Sam Fuller, but this was just kinda meh.
  • Winchester '73 4/5
  • Bend of the River 4.5/5
  • The Man from Laramie 4/5 These 3 are Anthony Mann/Jimmy Stewart Westerns and they are so, so good. It's fun to see another side of Jimmy Stewart--he can be vicious, mean, wrathful, but also selfless and daring to become a new man. The Far Country (I watched that a few months ago), is probably my favorite of their collaborations (the deconstruction of the individualist hero is just incredible), but I really like Bend of the River. So fun to see a Western actually shot in the PNW! I've also been ruminating about an exchange between a settler and Stewart, where the settler bemoans the heel turn taken by a shopkeeper. The shopkeeper has denied the settlers the supplies they need (and have already paid for!) to survive the winter because of a new gold rush. He can sell the supplies to miners and make 10x the profits. The settler says that it's too bad, he thought the shopkeeper had been a nice guy. And Stewart retorts "He was...until they found gold." And I just found it to be such an incisive and insightful look at human nature; we all can be good, but we all have that potential to go bad if the circumstances are there. That exchange, short that it is, is really revealing of the Mann/Stewart Westerns, and how they get human nature (alright, that's enough about Westerns and I doubt anyone cares enough about the genre [but stay tuned, I'm planning on making a big post on Westerns one of these days]).
  • The Wages of Fear 4/5
  • Diabolique 3.5/5 A nice pair of French drama/thrillers by Clouzot.

June:

The Naked Spur 3.5/5 Another Mann/Stewart Western.
On The Waterfront 5/5 hadn’t seen it since college. I know Brando gets all the ink but Malden is my favorite. His speech about Christ and Calvary is an all-timer.
The French Connection 4/5 another rewatch. Love Hackman and Scheider

Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore 4/5 Love this, especially the relationship between Alice and her boy.
The Banshees of Inisherin 4.5/5 I’d kill for the sweaters Colin Farrell wears.
12 Angry Men 5/5 another rewatch. Still just as good. Trying to think of another movie that boasts so many good performances, and maybe the only one I can think of is Network?

JFK 4.5/5 Whew. Never seen a movie this long move so well.

The Law Cafe (법대로 사랑하라): 8/10

The Law Cafe stars Lee Seung-gi, from Mouse, and Lee Se-young, from Kairos, in a much more lighthearted (mostly) show sure to appeal to @Greatoneshere yet again. Lee Se-young plays Kim Yu-ri a pro bono attorney that resigns from her law firm to open up a cafe that also gives out legal consultation. She's very anti corporation and specializes helping the little people thanks to a past experience where her late father was blamed for an accident while the business got off scot free. She's also friends with Kim Jeong-ho (Lee Seung-gi) who was a former prosecutor though some bad ties made him step down and become a landlord instead. They both like each other but he had kept his distance from her for a number of years when their paths crossed again when it turned out he was the landlord of the cafe. So the show is about solving cases, while revealing the mystery of what formed the rift between the two all these years. Unlike a normal law drama, there aren't really any court cases. Instead the characters use the law to their advantage in settings outside the courtroom to resolve issues. The cases are themes that manage to tie themselves back into the main narrative in a smart way. It's a cool formula but I felt in the last couple of episodes they shied away from the legal angle a bit, I would have liked to see some of that happen. Overall a fun show. Like I said mostly lighthearted but there are some intense themes of course (bullying, sexual harassment, etc) so it's not all smiles the whole way through. Also, it turns out between this show and Kairos, Lee Se-young is a very good crier. :p

My wife watches a ton of K-dramas but they're usually pretty boring to me. Mostly comes off as porn for women, a lot of self-indulgent emotional nonsense. Obviously some are great though, every genre has some good stuff.

Did she watch any of the ones I watched? Mine you might actually feel differently about. :p

NO TIME TO DIE (4K/ATMOS) 3/5

Well it was a nice send off for Craig, but boy did it take forever to get there. The movie runs a bit long, action scene were kind of lacking here (minus the big opening) Still holy shit on the plot details of this movie and having that Covid release timeframe. The disc looked pretty good, but the sound was amazing. Plenty of use with overheads Atmos speakers, with all the other speakers also being constantly active too. So good disc, too long of a movie, lacked some action, but was a nice last outing for Craig

Everything Everywhere All at Once: 9/10

I put this at the top of my Netflix queue back in December (at least) and finally after 7 months of being on "short wait" they finally sent it to me. Although it took a long time to become available I would say it was worth the wait. I don't know if I have much to add beyond what other people said (did other people say something? :p )  but this is probably the most important high concept movies since the original Matrix. It was like someone had an idea and said, "put it in there" and it worked. It certainly turned what would have been a mundane story into something extraordinary. Interesting how Jamie Lee Curtis won an Academy Award for this over Stephanie Hsu who had a more substantial part and actually showed more depth of character just by who the character is. Finally an interesting tidbit at the end of the credits, there is a copyright for hotdog hands LLC, funny how they filed a copyright for that particular thing just for this movie. :p

Yeah, Jamie Lee Curtis winning was seen as a “career” Oscar. Those can be kinda lame (for those of us lame enough to care about these things), but also that’s a fun, wild performance the likes of which normally don’t win awards, so I’m mostly fine with it. Glad to hear the movie lived up to the hype for you.

Wow this was awful… You can see its bad early on but I soldiered through to the end…. honestly the most impressive thing is the cameos… they pull from anywhere and everywhere sometimes all at once… some surprising appearances for sure…

Honestly about the only enjoyable thing is hearing Jim Cummings voicing a couple of characters (Darkwing Duck specially)

Its an interesting take on nostalgia.. some ridicule it, some update it, others present it as it was… then there was this

I think I liked it for all the reasons you hate it. Loved the cameos and being self-aware at times. It was a huge bunch of nostalgia for me, and being high might of helped as well. I kinda hope we get a sequel in all honesty

Harakiri: 8/10

When a film is titled Harakiri you can probably anticipate bad things happening, and that's pretty much how the film goes. It begins with a master-less samurai, Hanshiro, who arrives at a samurai clan and wishes to commit harakiri. However, before the clan accepts his request they try to deter him by telling him a counter tale, which sounds an awful lot like his own. It turns out many people turn up to the temple and ask to commit harakiri but they get turned away with money because they are kinda like bums or something. But the Iyi Clan says fuck that and made this individual actually follow through with it. So Hanshiro counters with a story of his own and it just goes to show you there are two sides to every story. In the third act they really kick things up a notch in terms of cinematography which is actually quite stunning. The film was directed by Masaki Kobayashi who had done Kwaidan (the only other film I've seen from him) and I think this one is slightly better but obviously the man does quality work. In any case a good movie and whatever transfer Criterion is using here looks really good as well.

JOHN WICK 4 (4K/ATMOS) 3.5/5

Well I don’t know if this is the end for Mr. Wick but if it is, then they sort of did a good job wrapping things up, but more questions have been left. Lots of Matrix feelings from this movie with a lot of similar setup/shots. I will admit the thing I loved most were the sets, with the elegance and super abundance of symbolism between humongous large items dwarfing the people that surround them. The action is good but it wasn’t as kinetic as the other 3, and I think his age might be part of it. Plus I sort of agree with Oliver Stone that they make him too superhero like here. He’s pretty much like Superman protecting the innocent with his bulletproof cape/suit. For its almost 3hrs length it never really dragged much for me and fuck do I love Donnie Yen. (Would like a spin-off) He I think is the real story here and same for the tracker/Mr. Nobody and would like to see more of his backstory somewhere. Disc looks great and overall sounds great, but I gotta check out what’s happening with the centre channel. Everything sounds low and a little muffled, and might need to figure out how to amp things up with an old receiver. Anyways I would rank the series 2,3,4,1 but might of tried too much here like The Raid 2 did story wise
