The deposed former speaker has made clear he plans to stay at least through the speakership election that begins next week before ending his House career, these people said, in order to help the party steady itself after a seismic shakeup.

Is it a possible pickup district if he resigns? I know he's won by pretty big margins before but he's also a longtime incumbent, so maybe a Democrat would have an actual chance against a complete newcomer?

Redistricting in 2022 returned the district to the San Joaquin Valley. The new 20th district includes parts of Kern, Tulare, Kings, and Fresno counties. It includes the southern Sierra Nevada and western Mojave Desert, with three "fingers" extending west into the valley. Cities in the district include Clovis, Tehachapi, Ridgecrest, Taft, Lemoore, the west and northeast sides of Bakersfield, the south side of Visalia, the northeast side of Tulare, the north side of Hanford, and a sliver of northeastern Fresno including California State University, Fresno.[3] The new 20th district is the most Republican-leaning district in California, according to the 2022 Cook Partisan Voting Index.

Naturally, he's denied the Politico report.

I mean he spent so long trying to become speaker. He almost thought they didn’t win the House in 2022 when it took a while to figure out the winner. Then he took 16 tries or whatever on a vote, and now this. What clout does he have?

Those that voted him out last week, what sort of scenario would they ever make them willing to change their mind? 96% of the conference wasn't enough to save him last time.

The conference forces through a rule change that significantly raises the bar for the motion to vacate resolution.

Yeah, but McCarthy has to be voted back in as the Speaker first. Does he have the votes for that again? Is there any concession he could possibly make to Gaetz and his flunkies? Because Lord knows he would never ask Dems for help.

I honestly have no idea if he has enough votes to become Speaker again without Democratic support to offset Gaetz & Company.

I love how moments like this teach people how utterly NOT set in stone the rules of government are.

What happens if no one has enough votes to become speaker of the house? .... nothing, because it's never happened before. The House just stops functioning until one is elected. There's literally no precedent for it.

Even stuff we take for granted, like the Presidential line of succession wasn't implemented until the Cold War, when they were like "oh shit, what happens if like the whole cabinet gets taken out in a nuclear strike?" Hell, the first time a president died in office (Harrison in 1841) they had no idea what to do. John Tyler was immediately appointed acting President, but they were like... do we just hold another election now? Imagine if that precedent was set...

Point being it's fun to give these examples when someone tries to present the Constitution as some exalted, infallible document. It's not, it was written to be intentionally vague about a lot of things.

Maybe he should try reaching across the aisle, that side has a touch less in the way of chaos agents than his.

Rep. Mike says McCarthy should be reinstated as Speaker.

“I believe he is the right person to lead,” he tells reporters.

Asked about his troubles getting 217 votes, Lawler says: “Well, who can?”

“Does anybody have the votes? No.”

That moment when you realize the Rep you are interviewing truly has no idea who the next Speaker should be much less how to get the votes for it.....

From The Guardian (reporting on an "X" from Politico):

McCarthy allies plan to nominate him during upcoming election - report

Quote

House Republicans supporting McCarthy plan to nominate the former House speaker for the position during the upcoming election, Politico reported.

Those in favor of McCarthy plan on voting for him as long as possible, with anywhere between 60 to 80 Republican votes going to McCarthy’s candidacy if he is nominated.

The goal is to install McCarthy as House speaker once again, while also denying Jordan and Scalise votes.
