Entertaining, but it would be nice to have a speaker so the House can actually conduct business again.

Apparently it's not necessarily the case that they have to get a new Speaker before they can do anything else and that may just be a requirement for the start of a new Congress.

From Max Burns:

Looks like Rep. Hakeem Jeffries is making his move, telling reporters Dems could work with the @GOP on a consensus Speaker choice.

"It means partnering to reopen the House," Jeffries said, "and changing the rules that were enacted in January that empower...extreme members."

From Robert Costa:

checked in with some centrist Dems… they’d privately like to see TOM COLE emerge as a consensus pick if Scalise stumbles, say he’d be easiest to work with for next year or so

right but anybody they would say is 'acceptable" like you posted above do you really think the rest of the gop would go for them?

They only need one Republican to nominate Cole and then like four more to vote yes?

Too bad the Dems suck at messaging because I think there’s a compelling 2024 argument to be made that when our allies needed us the most, Republican failure meant they couldn’t get the aid that’s needed.

Absolutely, the ads write themselves. Show clips of rockets exploding in Israel, apartment buildings being shelled in Ukraine, with text/voiceover. "Tell Republicans to get back to work, because the world needs America."

Sounds uncivil. Plus what if the Republicans run mean ads against the Democrats in retaliation?

From the just-concluded closed-door GOP meeting:

Quote

Several GOP members & aides coming out of this meeting don’t believe Scalise can ever get to 217

Steve is done. 100% done,” said one GOP source. “We might never elect a speaker.”

Quote

Republicans in the room said Scalise repeatedly wouldn’t tell members what his plans were, including whether he would seek a floor vote.

“Just rambled and didn’t directly answer questions. No plan. Didn’t unify or inspire the conference.”

From Jake Sherman:

Quote

The House Republican Conference is a mess. Complete and utter mess. They are no closer to picking a speaker. They are a month away from a shutdown. Israel is asking for aid, which needs to pass in the next few weeks.

They are completely lost. And have no idea how they will get out.
