Remarkableriots
Do you prefer to stick to the main story, explore, do every side quest, or do other things? For instance, I like to explore and find everything in open-world games like Assassin's Creed. I have spent an insane amount of time in Disgaea (1,000+ hours) just upgrading weapons and armor. I still haven't finished the story. I played it on my PSP, so I took it on trips and played a lot at work.
gamer.tv
Main line story. It’s rare to find a game where side quests feel meaningful - really, it’s why Nintendo are my favourite developer, everything feels purposeful.
AbsolutSurgen
I do a little bit of both. I tend to do most "story" side quests, but only a few "collectible" side quests if that makes any sense.
Remarkableriots
I probably gathered items in Final Fantasy XIV for 1k+ hours.
Best
I tend to focus on the main story but for instance with Zelda, all I did for hours upon hours was upgrade my stamina and health before I did anything else. I'm only now focusing on the main story which I'm certain I'm close in finishing soon.
Bacon
I do it all until I beat the game. If it has to be done after the final boss is dead then it is rare that I do that. I dislike post-game and would always like it if the final boss is the hardest boss in the game, even over super bosses.
Nokra
I used to be more of a completionist and would try to finish every side quest, explore every avenue for diversion, etc. These days though, where my gaming time is more limited, I tend to stick to the story unless there's something really intriguing. dualhunter
I prefer more streamlined games where the story progresses steadily but when I play games with tons of sides stuff to do I end up doing it. In Final Fantasy XV, Steam says I've played over 48 hours but I'm only on chapter 3.
Derek
I used to do a lot of the side stuff, then when I start to get bored, I just move onto the finish. Like Bacon, once I beat the main boss, I usually don't go back for post-game content. DQ 11 was the exception, though, I went back and hard 100 percented that bitch. Mr.Vic20
Stories, by an large, do very little for me anymore. I am mostly into exploring, leveing, crafting, and break the economy of a given world.
TheLeon
It depends on the game, but generally I guess I focus on the story/main campaign, and then how much side stuff I do depends on how much I’m enjoying the base gameplay/mechanics. I’ve never been a completionist.
stepee
Lately besides my usual platforming/story/exploring stuff I like most I’ve been really into crunchy visceral combat like Dead Island 2 and Evil West.
crispy4000
I don't like leaving important places unexplored or notable sidequests incomplete. I don't feel like I've truly seen a game through otherwise. Screw the achievements though.
5timechamp
depends on the games.. if the repeatable tasks are worthwhile then they will be pursued along with main objectives… sometimes games put annoying tasks to complete for good rewards (notes for sea shanties in black flag).. others like kicking doors in in Ghost Recon Wildlands are enjoyable for the variables.. Dre801
I will do a great deal of side stuff, but not all as I've never been a Completionist.
Xbob42
Depends on the game, my mood, the quality of the side content and main content, how long I've already been playing, what other games I'm interested to getting to, all kinds of factors that kind of change every play session. But if I generalize broad enough, I like to do side stuff until it stops being interested and get back on the main story.
Remarkableriots
Dragon Quest Builders I didn't get very far story wise because I was too busy building stuff. I need to finish that sometime soon.

I guess I didn't do that. Just max leveled everyone, finished all the quests and beat the Time Worm or whatever it was.

Fizzzzle
If the world isn't fun to explore for its own sake, I get bored. Sometimes I'll just go straight through, like with Hellblade or something, but generally I like to stop and smell the flowers, so to speak
EternallDarkness
it all depends on the game
