Why would it piss anyone off? The first game did the exact same thing over and over. That'd be weird to be upset by a mechanic people have known this game would have since the first has had it for a decade.

This game has already massively outsold the original.  I know people in my personal life who play one or two games year who either bought this game or have asked me about it.  The majority of players have never played the original and probably would have no idea this was a sequel if 2 wasn’t in the title.  Most people who play this game have no clue what was or wasn’t present in the original.  If you’re just jumping on the bandwagon now, I don’t think being surprised that an entire faction isn’t playable for a while is unreasonable.

On top of that, the original didn’t require an internet connection to play, you could just play by yourself offline.  I never played the original, but I’m assuming with no connection to the meta-game online, you could just play whatever you wanted even if a faction was off the map for a bit, because how would your offline game know that?

Also don’t get annoyed at outlets playing the game for clicks and engagement, the entire internet is ruined that way.  We built the shittiest version of something possible and made it impossible to succeed otherwise, it’s not their fault.

I'm not sure about the first game being played offline, I only ever played it online. But if your defense is that casuals are stupid, don't know they are playing a sequel, don't understand how the gameplay loop works even if there was a first game to go off of first, etc. you won't find any sympathy here. Their ignorance isn't a criticism of the developer, it's a criticism of casual gamers. I do think if you're just "jumping on the bandwagon now" that being surprised is unreasonable, that's my entire argument. The slightest amount of research (like with anything) would elucidate this for them.

If most people playing this game don't understand the gameplay loop, the articles are still stupid for not informing them better/more clearly rather than trying to drum up clickbait. I don't disagree with you that most Helldivers 2 players, like most people in general, are idiots, but idiots making stupid "jump to conclusions mat" Office Space style are to be chastised and educated, not justified.

How in the hell did we get to the conclusion that you’re in idiot for not playing a game from nine years ago?  You’re angry about clickbait titles that aren’t even clickbait, but you also think someone is a dipshit if they found out about a popular game because it was popular and didn’t do an oral history of the previous game before playing?  You call people stupid casuals for not knowing the gameplay loop of a game they didn’t play or a game that hasn’t fully revealed its own loop yet, while at the exact same time not knowing the mechanics of the original game yourself?  What are we even doing here?

Yes, if someone plays a sequel to the same gameplay loop as the previous game and instead believes the race is completely gone in the sequel game (to the degree it "pisses them off") then that's stupid. I said nothing about needing to have played the previous game to know this, you can just look it up online. I'm not angry about anything, I'm simply stating a fact that having clicked the article (and seen others online) that it's clickbait because there's no controversy here. And you exaggerate. Finding out the race isn't permanently gone isn't doing an oral history, it takes a second to find out, it's not work. I know enough of the mechanics of a game that they aren't going to perma-delete an entire race that's part of the gameplay loop. And me knowing/not knowing the offline/online aspect of Helldivers 1 isn't causing me to come to incomplete or incorrect conclusions about the sequel since I'm not disputing or criticizing what the game is doing with that mechanic or feature. So yes, I'm going to call someone stupid if they truly believe "race is gone permanently from sequel game" because one would assume something, anything else first since that's an incredibly stupid conclusion to come to. You don't need to even know the gameplay loop to assume how stupid that is to believe.

I know the developers said they wouldn't add in PvP because they want to avoid any toxicity forming in the community, but I took that as Helldivers vs. Helldivers, but what about Helldivers vs. player controlled bugs/robots ala Left 4 Dead? That might work.

After now putting in over 50 hours into this game, and wishing I had even more, I realize this really isn't that type of game at all, and wouldn't be needed/fit. I thought of this before getting the game, so didn't really understand the gameplay loop, so it doesn't need a mode like that. I wonder what other kind of variety they could add to the mission types though. They recently added an almost tower defense mission.

The Helldivers 2 community has come together on Reddit to pay tribute and honor a fallen Helldiver who tragically lost her life.

Quote

Within the first month of Helldivers 2 being released it sold over eight million copies, and that number has only continued to grow. Hundreds of thousands of players jump into the game every day to work together to spread democracy to the galaxy, often teaming up with people they have never met but share the same common goal. Unfortunately, not all of the Helldivers make it home and some have sadly been lost along the way, including Luce, a level 53 Helldiver that went by the handle ‘Fire and -ice-.’

U/Ghostga took to Reddit to share the sad news that a fellow Helldiver has fallen with a post titled “My Friend, Luce, passed away recently from a car crash and she was an avid Helldivers 2 player, getting every achievement and getting all the way to level 53. Rest in peace Luce.”

The Helldivers 2 community has come together to pay tribute to Luce with a sea of Helldivers 2 GIFs in the comments saluting the fallen soldier. Some other players gave more personal tributes, including u/ArtistAncient7924 who said,

“We are truly sorry for your loss. She fought in the name of managed Democracy and now she will rest in the light of liberty. We truly thank her for the amazing work and enthusiasm she had for diving. Let’s make these binary speakers regret in her name!”

U/Joy1067 is paying tribute to Luce during the current Major Order saying “Next bug hole I see, I’m tossing a grenade in for Luce,” while u/Ghostly-Terra also gave their condolences saying “The SES Hammer of Dawn shall launch a 380mm Barrage as a Multigun salute to the fallen.”

From Circana's (former NPD's) Mat Piscatella:

PC has been a huge part of the success of Helldivers II in the US. With PC, Helldivers II is already the 7th highest grossing Sony published game in history. Without PC it wouldn't currently rank among the top 20.

Rest of his quote:

And according to Circana's Player Engagement Tracker, Helldivers II has ranked first in US MAU on Steam each month since launch (including April). Launching Helldivers II on both PlayStation and PC has been nothing short of a massive, resounding success.

Just because I'm highlighting the success of the PC SKU here doesn't mean I'm saying the PlayStation SKU was not also successful, FYI.

Never underestimate Sony's ability to ruin a good thing.

I find this a bit sweeter because this is one of the games the Dragon's Dogma 2 hater trolls rallied around when it came to number of players playing (not micro-transactions for some reason though 🤔)

The reaction to this is absurdly overblown, but also this was a dumb move by Sony.  Just offer people something like 500-1,000 super credits for linking accounts and you’ll get almost everyone without the outrage.

There are some countries that don’t have PSN like China. No way Sony excludes China so I’m sure it won’t be a requirement for certain countries. At that point, why force it on everyone else?

Sony didn’t expect this to be such a huge hit and now wants to force PSN so it can report PSN growth during an earnings call. This has nothing to do with safety and security imo.

As said, multiple regions don't have PSN, and a mandatory account linking months after launch with a company known for multiple data breaches (including one involving 77 million accounts) isn't exactly an award-winning strategy at the best of times.

If it was there from launch, pretty much no one would care. It would still bother people, but this seems like it could, at least on Steam, set themselves up for easy refunds. "Do this or we brick your game" out of nowhere is a lot more significant than "them gamers are overreacting"

agreed. im totally baffled by this. big deal, you need to create a free account and link it. as if this is something new. PC players finally getting sony exclusives and then lose their minds over this is wild. it would really suck if sony rethinks their strategy of continuing to release games on pc  going forward if this is the reaction to something so insignificant. and im sure there will be exceptions for the regions that cant create PSN accounts.

True. No big deal. Person in Ukraine just needs to buy a PS4/PS5 so they can create a PSN account to play their PC game. #BeGratefultoSony

Steam discussions are a compelling argument that the first amendment was a mistake.

Changing the terms of sale months after launch and bricking your game if you don't agree (or in the case of the above 70 countries/territories: can't) is absolutely something new, gamers love to gobble corporate cock, I know, but come on.

But enjoy your unrestricted refunds and 120,000 negative reviews as well as no longer selling your game in 70 nations, Sony. Hope the fuckin' email addresses were worth it, lol.

Something I didn't know but that video outlines is that in the UK to make a PSN account you have to provide a face scan. Just another thing to add to the pile.

That’s the problem: there aren’t any exceptions being made. In fact, Steam is refunding people in those regions now upon request, regardless of how many hours they played, however, if you bought from a third party and not from Steam directly, you’re f’d. It’d be one thing if the PSN account creation was always required, but to add it in, and without much needed exceptions, is a really shitty move and anti-consumer.

I saw Germany is also like that, so I'm assuming other EU countries probably are similar.  That is a step too far for many in order to create online accounts.   And the UK and Germany are probably some of the biggest EU markets.

I definitely feel for Arrowhead Games.  They made an amazing game, did just about everything right, and are no watching their baby just get destroyed thanks to no fault of their own really.

And it seems Steam is just issuing refunds for most that are asking.  Can see that getting out of hand as I'm sure a lot of people have naturally stopped playing.

Many and get a refund and buy it again when its on sale soon.

The major mistake was on Sony's part in allowing the game to be sold on Steam in those restricted territiories to begin with in the full knowledge that the PSN integration would occur sooner or later.

Sony should have turned on the restriction flag on the Steamworks back end immediately once the game's Steam page went live.
