What should the new D1P "rules of engagement" with Twitter be?

Recommended Posts

With one of the most loathsome, odious people on this planet who I'd gladly torture to death with my bare hands about to take control of Twitter, the time has arrived for a discussion as to what the "rules of engagement" should be with that particular social media platform going forward, most notably in regard to its utility as a source of news information.

Personally, my preference would be to prohibit its use entirely on D1P, but obviously that's going to be difficult if not impossible in the near term.  As a result, I'm looking for ideas as to what should be the appropriate use of Twitter on this site.  My initial ideas are as follows:

1. Tweets that contain links to an actual news story will be prohibited, but rather the link to the news story itself should be posted instead.

2. Tweets that are one-off jokes/dunks/opinions, etc. will be prohibited.

3. Tweets that are one-off news items such as a picture or singular piece of information that's not necessarily "breaking news" will be prohibited.

4. Tweets that represent actually breaking news stories that do not yet have an actual associated news article will be permitted.

5. Tweets that represent substantive multipart informational/analytical content will be permitted.

Feel free to provide your own input as to how this site -- and specifically this board -- should approach Twitter going forward, bearing in mind that my overall objective is to reduce our overall engagement with Twitter as much as possible.  Naturally, I reserve the privilege of completely prohibiting ANY engagement with Twitter as I see fit :p

#4 and #5 are obvious inclusions.

However, #2 and #3 could range from actual conflict reporting updates (as we see often in the Russian invasion of Ukraine thread) all the way to "look at what this dumb motherfucker said." Parsing each should be easy, so there shouldn't be a blanket ban here.

I'm also pro-dunks. Being exposed to all the horrible news items on a day to day basis means that there needs to be some levity. And in the interest of giving credit where credit is due, I think it's worth allowing the reposting of good jokes instead of wanting to add levity to a thread and stealing the joke through scrubbing the original source.

Here's a great example of #2 and #3 at work together:

All said, I'm fine with people extracting articles and posting them instead of tweets. To add to that, I wish people would use paywall bypasses. The rest of these proposed guidelines for usage of Twitter would be a net negative for the forum.

Makes sense.

I think an exception should be made for any thread dedicated to NFL football.  Making fun of people in football is half of the fun.

I think that Tweets are very useful in communicating small updates that aren't conducive to a larger story.  For instance, Tweets from journalists with photos/small updates on what was happening on the ground were useful in understanding what was actually happening on the ground for numerous ongoing events this year (Ukraine, Canadian Truck Convoy, etc.)

I don't understand how you would enforce this without very active moderation.

=========================================

I understand why you might want to do it.  I guess I will separate the man from the social media platform in my mind, so my preference would be to not limit what sources can be posted.   But in the end, you own the board, you can do whatever you want with it.

For real, I think these "rules" are dumb as fuck. Not that I post fuck all from twitter, but it is really dumb. Just ban it out right or don't change anything at all. The "this is ok but this and this isn't, oh but this could be important so I have to make an exception" is some dumb shit. At that point just actually moderate and delete the posts you don't want to see. That's what will end up happening when someone links a tweet they think is ok but you don't anyway.

Either way, as someone who only uses twitter for porn, video game shit, and following twitch streamers, I could not care less about twitter dying. I will love watching people jump ship, and watch massive communities fall apart. Like, I wonder how much of an impact this will have on "cancel culture". Cuz like most of that shit really does come from twitter unless it is something actually massive. Like, I remember shit like Smash players being diddlers and a bunch of streamers met their end, like MethodJosh, from twitlongers. So many allegations against e-celebs would have almost never have seen the day if not for twitter. Sure, there would be youtube videos and reddit posts, but far less people are willing to make videos and reddit is kinda stuck in reddit.

tbh, the handwringing over Musk buying Twitter is pretty silly to me. Who cares if the platform goes from being owned by a bunch of rich weirdos to a smaller bunch of rich weirdos?

My experience would suggest there isn’t a lot of moderation today. Illegal content is about the only thing that regularly gets nuked.

I follow Musk on Twitter, and one of the things he's proposed doing it getting rid of the bot accounts that are used to spam actual users.  I think this is a good thing.  For popular accounts/tweets, it's hard to get a tweet in edgewise because there are so many bots spamming a tweet.

There’s a lot of conservatives who complain about being silenced from twitter and he is on record that twitter is not allowing “free speech” by silencing them (often for doing racism or targeted harassment or similarly odious things) so it’s easy to see those policies being reduced or eliminated at the altar of free speech

There are lots of people who complain about lots of things that don’t actually happen to them on these platforms!

Musk, a self-described "free speech absolutist," has been critical of the social media platform and its policies, and recently ran a poll on Twitter asking users if they believed it adheres to the principle of free speech. More than 70% of the 2 million votes cast said "No".

After Twitter banned former President Donald Trump over concerns around incitement of violence following last year's U.S. Capitol attack by his supporters, Musk tweeted: "A lot of people are going to be super unhappy with West Coast high tech as the de facto arbiter of free speech."

That said! I don't think the left/sane should bail on Twitter, ceding it to the right makes the left weaker without an alternative.

Let me introduce you to the concept of branding :p

Where is all this moderation of speech? Ask anybody outside of your white straight guy experience about how Twitter moderation is going and you may be shocked to find out it is still mostly the Wild West.

Even for the blue check marks? Outside of illegal content or supporting illegal behavior, where is the moderation?

Anybody thinks Twitter is doing meaningful moderation probably believes The Onion was indeed banned from Twitter.

No one will leave the platform until they make a massively unpopular user experience decision you can mark my words on this

I’m not saying it’s good now I never said that. I have said it can, and given his inclinations probably will, get worse. He’s all about “free speech” as conservatives see it not as it exists as on a platform.

because he is a conservative

“We are being censored!”, they scream from their social media feeds, and appearances on major news outlets, where they say all the things they want to say. This is a perfect example of how the right is sooooo much better at narrative building than the left.
