Getting passports for the whole family, help pick a country to travel to in 2022

Really not super picky, but want to start taking our kids to other countries since they will all be out of the house in the next 6 or 7 years.

What are your favorite places to visit? Maybe a region where it is easy to hit multiple countries in a 2 week trip.

You just described Western Europe in a nutshell.

This. I lived in Germany for nearly 10 years and not-infrequently would take a weekend trip to Spain, to England, to France, to Switzerland, to Portugal... It's easy once you're over there, either by rail or by short flight ( ~ 1 hour).

Other advantages are that it's very safe (current COVID issues excluded), and you can easily get by with English pretty much everywhere, especially in the bigger cities.

If you'd like any tips or suggestions, I'm happy to share my experiences if they would be useful. :)

One of the other things we would be looking for are times of the year when the weather is nice and kids are still in school. Don’t want to be on vacation and deal with busy places because the local kiddos are on holiday 😂

Spring Break in March but that's only 1 week. Don't go in the summer with the rest of the waddling Americans.

I've lived in Japan and Ireland.

Here's what I'll say. EVERYONE should go to Tokyo at some point. It's basically the close you'll ever get to being on an alien planet. I could never live there permanently, but everyone should go at some point. Unless you're a vegan, then maybe Japan isn't for you.

Edinburgh is absolutely the most beutiful place I've ever seen. It doesn't fit your weather criteria, but I LOVE Edinburgh in the winter. It snowed the first day I was there and I wanted nothing more.

For the most part, giant cities like London, Paris, New York, Tokyo, etc are best in small doses. Bangkok is another one. People are assholes, you might die from traffic accidents, you have to dodge con artists.. people are general douchebags.

Full ranking, taking into account that you're with your kids and can't like go on an acid trip at a beach bar:

1) Puerto Vallarta/Sayulita

2) Bali

3) Tokyo

I don't think your kids are old enough yet to appreciate somwhere like Dublin or Edinburgh. They'd probably think it's boring. Absolutely do Mexico or Bali, though. Or Thailand. I could even recommend an island off the coast of Thailand if you want. It takes a long time to get there, but once you're there it's fucking paradise.

Oh, an adendum: Taiwan can be a substitue for Tokyo. The east coast of Taiwan is fucking gorgeous, the west coast has great becahes and all the absurdity of Tokyo. It's worth noting that you'd better speak Mandarin or know someone who does, though. Taiwan is much less English-friendly than Tokyo. And if you want to get your Asian fix while still being able to get around, Japan has places like Sendai (I lived there for a year) and Okinawa that can hit all the boxes.

If you're going to Europe, I wanna throw Prague out there. One of my favorite cities I've visited, I try to go every time I go visit the family since it's only a few hours by train.

It just feels so old in a good way. The architecture is gorgeous, the food is great and it's cheap.

I too will wholeheartedly endorse Prague!

Also you can buy Absinthe ice cream on the street there and they mean it. I thought it was a tourist joke thing and got wrecked because I ordered two scoops. I still have a great, nerdy Kafka shirt from the Kafka cafe.

Italy. It hits the sweet spot of scenery, food, and museums. Hit up Florence, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast (probably the most beautiful place on earth). In Florence you can visit the Uffizi and Bargello which will take care of most Renaissance masterpieces. You can also see Masaccio's frescoes which are insane. Also you can plan a bunch of day trips throughout Tuscany while you're at it. Then in Rome just go see every Bernini sculpture you can. The Borghese has a bunch of Bernini and some Caravaggio and that will take care of the Baroque. Then the Amalfi coast for the relaxing part. Drink at least a jug of house wine at every restaurant you visit.

And I almost forget! Assisi! That is truly the most beautiful place you will ever see. I'm not Christian and I'm certainly not Catholic but watching the sun rise from the Basilica of St. Francis is probably the closest I've ever been to a religious experience.

Anyways, I recommend Italy.
