Activision-Blizzard Case Update: Activision's internal investigation pats itself on the back for doing a pretty good job

Recommended Posts

He just got his $150m yearly bonus a couple months back. As long as Activision makes those "changes" within the next great, he's not losing out on the actually important part of his compensation. He'll argue that he helmed those changes and was an example by taking the paycut and totally deserves another $200m bonus.

The top executive didn’t inform the board of directors about some reports, including alleged rapes. The company is facing multiple regulatory investigations.

As usual, the sin for which Kotick may ultimately be sacrificed is not the one you’d hope.

Over the years, Mr. Kotick himself has been accused by several women of mistreatment both inside and outside the workplace, and in some instances has worked to settle the complaints quickly and quietly, according to people familiar with the incidents and documents reviewed by the Journal.

In 2006, one of his assistants complained that he had harassed her, including by threatening in a voice mail to have her killed, according to people familiar with the matter. He settled the matter out of court, the people said.

The Activision spokeswoman said: "Mr. Kotick quickly apologized 16 years ago for the obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate voice mail, and he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone in his voice mail to this day."

In 2007, he was sued by the flight attendant on a private jet he co-owned. The flight attendant claimed the plane's pilot had sexually harassed her, and, after she complained to the other owner, Mr. Kotick fired her. The defendants denied the allegations. In a separate action related to legal fees in the case, an arbitrator, citing what he said was sworn testimony, wrote that Mr. Kotick told the flight attendant and her attorneys, "I'm going to destroy you." A spokesman for Mr. Kotick denied that he said that.

In 2008, they settled by paying the attendant $200,000, according to the arbitrator's decision. A spokesman for Mr. Kotick said he couldn't have fired her in retaliation for complaining because she never complained directly to him.

CEO Bobby Kotick allegedly knew about sexual misconduct allegations but failed to inform the board of directors, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Down 28% in the last 6 months compared to EA and TTWO which both have slight gains. If the Vanguard sales are weak, maybe this is finally enough to make him “retire”.

If the UK is any indication...

Treyarch co-lead Dan Bunting has left the Call of Duty: Black Ops studio

Quote

The co-head of Call of Duty developer Treyarch, Dan Bunting, has left the studio after a Wall Street Journal investigation into a sexual harassment claim against him from 2017. Bunting’s departure is part of a larger story about Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick’s awareness of and response to serious sexual harassment allegations at the publisher’s owned studios, including Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch.

Bunting was the subject of an internal investigation in 2019 over accusations that he sexually harassed a female employee in 2017, according to the Wall Street Journal. The result of that investigation recommended that Bunting be fired, the Journal reports, but Kotick intervened and Bunting was allowed to keep his position.

An Activision spokesperson told the Journal that “other disciplinary measures” were imposed on Bunting, and the Journal reports that he left Treyarch after the newspaper inquired about the accusation and investigation. An Activision spokesperson confirmed Bunting’s departure in an email to Polygon.

Capital protects its own.

At the same time, this is the typical "confidence" statement a Board of Directors invariably releases publicly while privately suggesting to the CEO that it might be in their interest to "spend more time with their family".

I'd prefer they reported that Bobby "went on a fishing trip."

Stock down another 2.5%, early signs show Vanguard might not be selling COD levels well, and an employee walkout are all adding levels of different pressure on this situation. I don’t know if it leads to his “retirement” but it’s gonna be harder and harder for him to stay of this continues month after month.
