Since I'm isolated at home... @Joe @Bloodporne up for returning?

I'm still in the middle of a movie so I might be back in the gaming weeds this weekend if time permits? I also gotta shake the rust off. I played the Tower for a night recently but then had to start putting all fun on hold for the move argh.

If I get better I'm going on vacation this weekend. But it'll still be here when I get back.

What about @Joe?

Hopefully the Steam port is good. Haven't other Sony ports, like Horizon for example, not exactly been the best with their PC optimization?

HZD was shaky but GOW was good. Returnal should probably be pretty good especially since the developer have made PC games before.

Achievements have been localised on the as-yet unannounced port…

In May, SteamDB logged the presence of a new product in the database which goes by the codename ‘Oregon’.

While it wasn’t immediately clear what the game is, certain localisation strings in the game’s listing make it clear that it’s a PC port of Returnal.

Now the site’s history page shows that the in-development game continues to get new builds on a daily basis.

On Thursday, for example, the game’s achievements were updated with new localisations, with 19 new languages added.

Although the Oregon codename doesn’t give away that the game is Returnal, its localisation strings include such phrases as ‘Atropos’, ‘Tower of Sisyphus’, ‘In Helios’ and ‘Returning’, making the game’s identity clear.

The Steam database entry for what is almost certainly Returnal has been updated again, refuelling speculation that Housemarque’s 2021 shooter will soon be revealed for the platform.

Now eagle-eyed users have noted further updates to the listing, with several rapid changes being made within the space of a few days.

The following updates were spotted by ResetEra user Mocha Joe:

  • 8 depot/app changes on 7/11 UTC time
  • 10 depot/app changes in the past 24 hours
  • 6 depot/app changes on 7/9 UTC time
  • External_ship got an update, the first time in 20 days (doesn’t happen often, but it’s an interesting coincidence)
  • Steam deck controller profile

While this doesn’t infer anything about when the game is likely to be revealed, the frequency of updates to the app itself could suggest a short time between the announcement and release. Sony’s PC ports so far have typically only seen a few months between confirmation and release.

Just read this. Did this make things easier for you guys?

"Returnal 2.0 update, which allows you to create a suspension point in-game. This doesn’t work like a traditional save point, though. Instead, it preserves your progress so you can quit the game without worrying about losing your progress".

I haven't played it yet, but why would that make it easier? From the sounds of it, you can't reload if you fuck up, you can just quit the game and pick up where you left off, which just does a better job respecting your time and it's shocking to me it didn't have this support before!

I don't think you could quit the game and load up where you left off originally. The new patch allows that now. So you're not wasting time or losing progress if you have to stop playing for some reason.

Unless I'm not understanding what you mean?

Right, which is not something I would classify as making it "easier." It's just as hard to complete now has it was before, but you don't have to have dedicate time to do it in one go.

This just makes it more convenient then, not easier like I claimed. Well the article I read said it makes the game more approachable and easier.

I own this but at my age I'm absolutely God awful in games now. It just looks really cool but if it's over the top difficult I'll have to pass on it. I regret buying it when I got my PS5.

Yes, I agree with that :) Sorry if my first responses came off as hostile. I just wanted to make sure you weren't interpreting it as allowing you to save scum or something or if I misunderstood the feature.

I can sympathize. For me, I've come to enjoy hard games again, even in my older age, but only when they are not big time sinks. If I'm going to have to retread hours to get back to a challenging point, it's probably not something I'll enjoy because I don't have huge time blocks to dedicate anymore. Hades was borderline for me, because it would take ~hour to get back to the final boss (Hades) to practice the fight for just a minute, but I did eventually finish that and then some, and enjoyed it.

The thing I like about hard games, assuming they respect your time and are fair, is they remind you that you can still get better at something if you work at it. It's easy to fall into a mentality that if you can't succeed at something quickly that you just cannot do it. But this is basically never true and is a counterproductive attitude to form. People who are good at things failed a lot to get there, and playing hard games reminds you of that.

Returning the original topic, if you're new to Rougelikes, you might want to consider Rogue Legacy 2. It has a whole bunch of "house rules" to literally make it easier with no restriction (you still get the same achievements), and many of the built-in mechanics make it possible to jump straight to the new boss you're fighting so that you don't have to retread ground.

Something to consider about Returnal as well is that it is absolutely an arcade game at heart. I know it sounds almost weird to say this in 2022 but it's not so much about beating the game in my opinion as the moment-to-moment gameplay and, not sure how to put this, micro-achievements maybe? I can't tell you how much this game reminded me of playing Contra on SNES back in the day, stuff like that. I rarely beat games back then, it was just about how much better can I be this time, how much further can I get, how much slicker can I do this...that type of feeling. I had almost forgotten that's a thing and Returnal REALLY baffled me for minute before that clicked for me again.

I Platinum'd it before the Suspend Cycle feature if that tells you just how fucking good I think this game is. I have never Platinum'd a game before or since. Once I realized literally any time I booted this game up, I was gaining towards new permanent weapon unlocks and so on, it became irrelevant to me whether today I played 15 minutes and then quit a run or played for two hours. Not saying that the game would function like this for everyone but yeah. It's a super unique game through and through in that it isn't really one genre, it pulls from many different things and creates its own mutation.

The update makes the game more convenient I think. The game absolutely has a strong learning curve just because it's so different and seems to give zero shits about other games' rules, it just kind of exists in its own bubble. If I had to relate the difficulty to anything it'd be imagine playing a Contra or a Metal Slug as a modern TPS. If you end up playing and need tips or tricks, I could talk about this game all day.
