Development is being led by Osaka-based M-Two, the new studio founded by former PlatinumGames head Tatsuya Minami, which has been preparing for the project since 2018.

However, similar to how 2020’s Resident Evil 3 was led by company Red Works, Capcom’s internal teams and other external studios are likely to lend support.

It’s understood that the remake has the blessing of original game director Shinji Mikami, who officially declined an approach to lead the project himself but has provided informal advice on its direction.

The studio helming the remake has been in operation since 2018 and is comprised of many former Platinum and Capcom employees.

No. That's 5.

And jesus, how much shit will they cut out of this one. They can't even handle remake short as hell PS1 games with all content, what will this be? Village to final stage to end boss and brand it a 'reimagining' as an excuse?

They handled RE2 just fine. Resident Evil 3 was a game that was not on the same pedestal and that was already a short game (the remake is roughly the same length as a playthrough of the PS1 game, not that RE2 was really much longer) but Resident Evil 4 is held up to even higher standards than 2, so I imagine they'll put a lot more effort and probably time into it. Let's not forget that RE3 came out just one year after 2. I wager they wanted to push it out while these consoles were still relevant while also getting it out early enough for a Resident Evil 4 remake to get enough time in the oven for a new generation. If I had to guess, I'd assume that this will be a repeat of history where RE3 gets the shaft mostly because of timing.

Spoiler

I'd check out the entire thread, as I'm not an expert on original RE3, but a lot of the "cut" content does appear to me to be either moved slightly or condensed, with maybe less puzzles, while some areas are expanded and at least one is new. Based on what little I read there, seems like the weird design of the original game probably made it awkward trying to fit it all together with the modern design. But I haven't even beaten it yet so I'm just going off of the opinions of these folks. It doesn't seem as egregious as people initially made it out, though, but I'm also always in favor of more content when a game is good enough to warrant it. Too short, especially at full price, can leave me unsatisfied.

4 is pretty widely considered one of the best games ever.

@Bloodporne is in the minority on the RE2 remake, most people loved it.

I don’t buy the idea they can’t do 4 justice. Hell I’d love for them to cut some of that game down, it was too long.

I loved RE2R actually. I beat it like 8 times and had a lot of fun. That being said I still think it's disappointing purely on the remake front at the same time.

Honestly though I think I'm just pandemic-induced shitposting. I've been in a terrible mood and hating on shit nonstop, my keyboard needs a chastity belt type device man.

I thought with 2 they did an incredible job of capturing the feel of the original while making it more accessible to modern audiences. Like it’s hard for me to imagine them doing a better job pragmatically I guess, not to say it’s perfect. I love the original for reference and beat it 4 times last summer lol. I haven’t played 3 since the reception has been a lot more mild, but I actually really like original 3.

I like 2, 1 remake, and code Veronica all better than 4, but I’d like to see what they do with 4.

I don't want this unless it remakes the OLD RE4.

Well, I'd also be fine if they totally redid the island. It is the only reason I have never got any of the releases. I just hate that part. I hate the aesthetic, I hate the music, I hate the "levels", and I hate the enemies except for the regenerator.

I kind of love how ridiculous the island is. They could have easily shipped the game with the castle being the last area and it still would have went down as a classic, but nah, they wanted to add 25% more content and fill it with crazy action set piece after set piece. You've got creepy regenerators, bulldozer ride, Krauser QTE fight, Krauser one-on-one fight, that hanging shipping container boss fight, helicopter mayhem, the jet ski finale, guys with big machine guns, all of the enemies are new, the environments are new, and it's all packed in like 5 hours of non-stop gameplay. I love it.

I think the RE2make is ok. Not really amazing tho. They dumbed down a lot of stuff. I guess you could say they simplified shit, but I don't think that made for a better game. There really weren't many puzzles, they removed enemies, changed enemies, and the game became lesser after the police station. I still hate the random critical hit shit, and zombies taking 80 million years to kill. I get that you don't have to kill all the zombies, and I didn't, but it is still annoying that you could literally empty a whole pistol clip into a normal zombie and they would still be alive.

The regenerators and Krauser were fine additions to the game, everything else about the island just sucks. Especially the music. The escape was fun too. And all the bosses were fine, I wasn't really counting them in the normal enemies shit.

But as I said:

Edit: Also, I don't think the game should have ended after the castle. I think it needs a third act, but just one that isn't the island.

I loved how sturdy the zombies were. It really sold them as a proper threat and not the hilarious joke they always are in RE games. You can expend resources to kill them, which plays very well into the survival horror elements. But it doesn't just take 3 bullets out of your 12 bullets, it might take a full clip out of your 3 clips. Or you could get clever and take risks by downing them and quickly knifing them. You'd make the area safer for later at a greater cost to you now.

It also had the benefit of allowing you to fire more shots, which is great, because the combat for me was absolutely sublime. Controlled great and felt great to shoot enemies. Your guns, despite not killing zombies quickly, really had a huge impact on them, you'd shred their flesh and clothes off and send them reeling. It's like the opposite of FF7R, where Cloud is swinging a huge hunk of steel that has to weigh several hundred pounds with incredible force, but enemies don't even flinch, fucking sparks fly off a dog as you're doing these crazy ass combos as they literally have no reaction whatsoever to being pummeled with something that should be sending them dozens of feet into the air.

The firing more shots also looped back in on the survival horror elements because having to fire more shots means you're more likely to fire misses, which means you may be expending resources for nothing. This kind of was the case in RE4-6 but it didn't matter there because you had tons of guns and ammo and they were action games. In the original RE titles, the tank controls basically meant you had auto-aim and it was really hard to miss most of the time, though still possible of course.

Then this again looped because enemies taking lots of punishment meant you had to dedicate more space to ammo if you wanted to fight them, so in classic RE form, walking around packed to the gills with weaponry meant you might be making extra trips or killing extra enemies just to make room without "wasting" ammo, encouraging you to think more about what you took with you. Modding your weapons more able to easily dispatch enemies also generally made them take up an extra slot, so sometimes you might take a mod off a weapon and intentionally weaken it just so you have a free space.

The random critical hits were great because they're a small moment of satisfaction when you 100% expect to be using up a ton of ammo. They're like a breath of fresh air, a small moment of the game backing off for a moment. They're nothing but positive. If they weren't in the game, it's not like you'd somehow have crits otherwise. They only work toward your favor. I guess in the odd case where one happens after already pumping a lot of ammo into a monster you might be annoyed it didn't happen earlier, but other than that I was always happy for one to land, you can't give them based on headshots because headshotting slow moving humanoids at close range is easy as shit, which, again, makes the sturdiness of them really sell the actual reason why zombies are scary: they're relentless tanks, even if they're slow and clumsy.

Yeah I meant they could have had a third act using all of the existing assets. They didn't need to create a whole new area with new enemies, mechanics, set pieces, etc.

I still don't like it. Like, with that giant wall of text it feels like we played two different games.

I mean, you can just run by without much issue. There are a few exceptions, but normal zombies aren't a threat most of the time.

I mean sure, you can totally do that... in every single Resident Evil game that doesn't have arena-style rooms where the door locks until you win a fight. You ever see a speedrun of classic RE titles? It's just dodging zombies in even more awkward ways since it's tank controls. And the "puzzles," as much as I adore RE's dumb puzzles, are some of the lowest tier puzzles in video gaming. Examine the thing and take the gem out to put it in the slot. Click the button under the paintings in chronological order. They're rarely puzzles so much as chores. Like Professor Layton rejects.

I would have been fine with more, better, newer puzzles. I am fine with not needing to push a statue on to a panel to get a key item, but I wish there was something that replaced that. It just feels too simplified. Like talking out all the spices besides salt and pepper because the rest aren't necessary. It isn't really that bad of course, but yeah.

Frankly I don't think Capcom trusts their base to sit around solving decent puzzles at this point, and I'm not entirely sure I trust them to come up with "good" puzzles either. Have they made decent puzzles in any games recently? I wouldn't mind if they were actually good. But part of the reason I enjoyed replaying RE2 Remake so much is because there was no tedious filler. Once you knew the solution to the basic puzzles you could just memorize it.

Hmmm seems like my choice to wait  get this on sale was justified. I JUST bought REmake 2 a couple of weeks ago and got it for 25 bucks which seems like a good price to me. I beat Leon's campaign and I'm probably about a third of the way through Claire's campaign now. I didn't feel like I would be cool paying 60 bucks for either of these games at the time, so i'm cool with getting this on sale.

I've been saying for a couple months now it's for the RE4 remake. Give me that next gen with eye melting graphics and updated combat and I'm sure it will be good. I wouldn't be concerned after RE3R, 3 is just a worse game than 2, and they knocked the RE2R out of the park. 3R is worse because the original source material is worse. 4R will be fine, base it off what they did with 2R and not 3R. I am excite.

I'm on board with this.  It's strange remaking RE4 when it was over the shoulder to begin with.  I don't think I could enjoy the game in the same way if you could strafe, or even run and shoot.  Capcom will need to do a lot of fundamental redesign work.

The game is also campy in a good way.  Few games attempt humor like it anymore, most everything nowadays feels like it has to fit a certain mold.  RE4 knew that breaking the tension with some silly shit every once and a while could make it more enjoyable.  But they did it tastefully enough not to break the immersion.

It's pretty much the perfect stepping stone between PS2-era oddity and 'gamification' and 360-era melodrama and 'grit.'  Yet it managed to be better than what was on both ends.  Magical game.

So... good luck Capcom.
