Nobody was fired, wrongfully or otherwise. Rowling defended someone who was judged in court to have said plainly discriminatory and hurtful things.

Forstater was terminated from her job for her stated views. That’s what her employment tribunal case was seeking to rectify.

I'm not familiar enough with users and their personalities, but this is a joke post, right?

I thought they just declined to renew her contract.

Her contract was not renewed explicitly because of the views she expressed. She would still be employed had she not expressed those views. The mechanism isn’t particularly important. If she was an at-will employee, should would have been immediately terminated.

Basically, I just felt like narrowing it down :p

But that's still substantively different than being fired. You're explaining her right to sue better than justifying the outrage.

It really isn’t, she was only “not fired” in the sense that her employment ended by not re-upping her contract. She is no longer employed there because of what she said, this was explicitly stated by the employer.

In fact, I believe you recently posted a tweet saying Gabrielle Union was fired by Freemantle from America’s Got Talent, and they did so through the same mechanism: they didn’t re-up her contract seemingly in retaliation for her things she said about the culture of Freemantle/NBC.

Sure and I think it's fair to draw conclusions about both of their reasoning. But it's not fair to be outraged absent the context of that reasoning.

The reasoning for being dismissed is that she tweeted this:

Quote

“UK gov consultation on reforming the #GenderRecognitionAct - proposes to dramatically change scope of the law; from requiring medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria for change of sex on birth certificate, to using the basis of 'self identification' ...

I share the concerns of @fairplaywomen that radically expanding the legal definition of 'women' so that it can include both males and females makes it a meaningless concept, and will undermine women's rights & protections for vulnerable women & girls. ...

Some transgender people have cosmetic surgery. But most retain their birth genitals. Everyone's equality and safety should be protected, but women and girls lose out on privacy, safety and fairness if males are allowed into changing rooms, dormitories, prisons, sports teams.”

Lets give more context to the sorts of things the judge quoted Forstater as saying

Quote

“Thanks Arthur. Yes I think feminists and non gender conforming and trans people are natural allies. If you look at the people that are concerned about this they are lesbians, longtime LGBT activists, transsexuals, left wing campaigners. They don't want to enforce gender conformity.

But I think there are also a group of misogynist people, and others who want to undermine protections for women and children that have become entryists to the Trans Rights Activists movement that are not natural allies to women: gamergaters, incels, narcissists, extreme porn advocates.

They are exploiting vulnerable young people and everybody's empathy and concern to do the right thing in respect of them - (For an example see the recent case of ...
(I am not saying all trans people - -I know this sounds like 'moral panic' and I know most people just want a quiet life, but there is a dark side to some of the people making a political career out of arguing that males should be allowed into women's spaces. - - this vocal group is never going to be on common ground with feminists, or benefit people suffering gender dysphoria or depression etc)

You are right on tone. I should be careful and not unnecessarily antagonistic. But if people find the basic biological truths that "women are adult human females" or "transwomen are male" offensive, then they will be offended.

Of course in social situations I would treat any transwomen as an honourary female, and use whatever pronouns etc...I wouldn't try to hurt anyone's feelings but I don't think people should be compelled to play along with literal delusions like "transwomen are women"

She said something that was true of biology and it is also something that certainly could hurt feelings, but that’s a pretty low bar for losing your job. She also made rather clear who the target of her ire is, and it isn’t trans people.

Gender / biological sex. Same thing there are only two genders. It's a scientific fact. Biologically you're either Male or Female. I'm not wrong.

Guess you've never heard of intersex people. I used to have pediatric patients like that. So GTFO with your ignorance.

And for the people who still don't get it and honestly probably never will: Gender is a social construct. Look up the damn definition.

Science is pretty clean cut, you're wrong. Male and female is all there is, if you believe otherwise you're a fucking liberal snowflake. Science also says global warming is a fucking sham but what do I know.

On the small chance this wasn't rhetorical: literally fucking nothing.

Are you aware the positions you're taking in this thread mimic those of physicalist logicbro science fandom idjiots who unironically parrot Sam Harris and express takes like, "one mustn't let something so petty as the human emotion obstruct consistent logical thinking" and stuff like that which echos a 19th century "critical thinker's" thesis more than anything relevant now?

It's objectively true that every argument you're trying to make in this thread has been dismantled.  At no point during your rambling incoherence has a rational thought been expressed. And if you're trolling and don't genuinely believe the things you're spewing, the reason you suck at it is you either don't care or are incapable of knowing how to respect the intelligence and sense of humor of anyone here you're trying to prank, and that basic-ass approach to "satire" and your post history is why you've already been thoroughly rekt on this topic whether you choose to take the L or not ya dork :p

Speaking of changing nationalities and such, I had a patient last week who was just the typical southern American and when I met her daughter, she spoke with a pronounced British accent. Kinda threw me off, and the patient told me(with disapproval) that her daughter was born and raised in Louisiana but “decided she needed an accent that fit her better.”

I've never heard of someone training themselves to speak in an accent from a country they’ve never been to. First time for everything, I guess.

Wouldn't changing nationalities mean immigrating to another country and adapting to the culture? Also sometimes accents can change when moving somewhere where an accent or language is different.  My coworker I've known since highschool over time developed more of a standardized american TV anchor-sounding accent than his aussie one.  He said it just kinda happened and wasn't intentional.  The example you mentioned sounds a bit more unique though.

I mean, I have a pretty New York American accent without barely any accent and I was born and raised in Germany but...I've lived here for over 20 years. Randomly adopting a British accent because it makes you feel more unique and special sounds like a nutbag to me and entirely different.

The guy I was talking about has been here for 17 years, so there ya go. Yeah, the only time I remember seeing an accent change anything like that is when Madonna did it years ago as a publicity stunt.   Intentionally speaking in a fake accent until it becomes the one you use all the time seems pretty crazy to me.

Ah yes, the time Madonna was randomly Spanish for a few videos. I totally forgot about all these weird antics the past decades' mercurial pop mega stars would go through.

It's code switching and it's very common if you want to be taken seriously by the powers that be--dropping AAVE or a southern accent

Oh I didn't know that. Also pretty sure she only spoke with a british accent for like a year (assuming I'm not misremembering)? Oh, Madonna.

Huh? And you're saying these powers that be want you to sound southern or speak in a blackcent?  What do you mean?

Drop the southern accent or aave in the corporate world to come across as more intelligent. Then with friends and family you use your "normal" accent. After some time, you may end up changing your "normal" accent to the normal corporate one. Switching between accents/dialects depending on your audience is code switching, and is quite common

On a more familiar level, it's the same way you don't talk to your parents the same way you talk to your best friend. Everyone code switches (sort of) without even realizing it. Obviously there's a difference between changing your entire vernacular and not calling someone a cunt every third word, but it should be enough to help get the idea by. It doesn't sound like this is what happened with CNut (just sounds like someone extremely insecure trying to elevate their social station in the most lazy way possible), but it's an interesting topic nonetheless.
