CitizenVectron Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/01/politics/trump-india-trade-status/index.html Quote The Trump administration announced Friday that it's ending special trade treatment for India, removing a status that exempts billions of dollars of the country's products from US tariffs. "I have determined that India has not assured the United States that India will provide equitable and reasonable access to its markets," President Donald Trump said in a proclamation issued by the White House. As of June 5th, India will be terminated from its designation as a beneficiary developing country. The move adds one more front to Trump's global trade wars. It comes as Trump took new aim at Mexico this week with threatened tariffs if the country does not step up its immigration enforcement actions. The President has also promised new levies on China amid an impasse in negotiations over a renewed trade deal, and is considering a ban on foreign auto imports. India will be removed from the preferential trade program, known as the Generalized System of Preferences, which gives developing countries easier access to the US market and lowers US duties on their exports. The White House also removed Turkey from the GSP program. The bigger news (ban on foreign auto imports) is buried here, but both items are newsworthy. Can you imagine if Trump unilaterally decided that cars built outside of the US were illegal? I mean, Canada and Mexico make a huge amount of cars that are shipped to the US. Quote

We are going to cut off Opium from the Orient. It's a big problem. Big deal. They don't like when I say it. No, they don't, I'm serious. But they, the opium, also the spices. The spices. Unbelievable. You won't believe the spices that they bring back. You could swim in them. But the opium dens are a big problem. Nobody's saying it, but it's true. Commissar SFLUFAN Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 CNN can't even summarize the links to their own articles right. It's not a "ban" on auto imports - it's a 25% tariff on them. Quote

TwinIon Posted June 3, 2019 Posted June 3, 2019 A 25% tariff is insane, but it makes more sense than a ban. Quote

TwinIon Posted June 4, 2019 Posted June 4, 2019 Apparently the GOP is considering a vote to prevent the tariffs on Mexico. Doing so would require Congress override the southern border national emergency declaration. That would effectively remove the wall funding that Trump secured. I have a very hard time imagining the GOP actually getting the votes together to stop this. It's too direct a challenge to Trump, and with wall funding on the line as well, I can't imagine reaching the critical mass necessary to override the President. Quote
Snaynay1 Posted June 5, 2019 Posted June 5, 2019 I am all for free trade and no tariffs, but doesn't India charge something like a 75% tariff on American autos going there? Quote
