U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Tuesday she will run for a 19th term in office, without saying whether she would seek to remain in the Democratic leadership role she had earlier said she would relinquish next year.
Quote

It was not immediately clear if she would honor an agreement she made to secure an unprecedented second term as speaker after the 2018 election to serve only two additional terms in the role and pave the way for a new generation to ascend to House Democratic leadership.

When a California Democrat in Congress recently engaged in an extended conversation with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, they prepared for a rigorous policy discussion like those they’d had with her many times over the last 15 years.

Instead, the lawmaker said, they had to reintroduce themselves to Feinstein multiple times during an interaction that lasted several hours.

Rather than delve into policy, Feinstein, 88, repeated the same small-talk questions, like asking the lawmaker what mattered to voters in their district, they said, with no apparent recognition the two had already had a similar conversation.

---

They said that the memory lapses do not appear to be constant and that some days she is nearly as sharp as she used to be. During the March confirmation hearing for soon-to-be-Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Feinstein appeared composed as she read pertinent questions, though she repeated comments to Jackson about the judge’s composure in the face of tough questioning. But some close to her said that on her most difficult days, she does not seem to fully recognize even longtime colleagues.

“It’s bad, and it’s getting worse,” said one Democratic senator. This person said that within the Senate, Feinstein has difficulty keeping up with conversations and discussions.

“There’s a joke on the Hill, we’ve got a great junior senator in Alex Padilla and an experienced staff in Feinstein’s office,” said a staffer for a California Democrat.

Not sure if this goes here but looks like progressives are about to screw the disabled movement on our one ask.

(HCBS = getting the 1.2m people with disabilities off the home care waiting lists, including people in nursing homes. Coverage gap = Medicaid expansion in the states that haven't done it)

I've hung my hat on the "let's not be ageist because that is actually bad" peg here, but you know...

Maybe if you're going to do a Dianne Feinstein piece, try to not have the photo look like the "after" image of a Sam Raimi makeup transition? Just a thought.

In no world is it ageist to say people suffering with alzheimers shouldn't be in government. This is not "She's gay!" Or she's "Just getting old!". This is a woman who routinely seems to forget who and what she is talking about, and has to be told by aids. They help her vote to make sure she does it correctly.

We need to stop pretending truth is offensive. Pretending an alzheimers patient is a better candidate than a junior senator is absurd. She did great work, that doesn't mean theres not a time to make her exit stage left, and if Chuck was any kind of leader, he'd have asked her to resign. And if she refused, he should publicly support a primary challenger.

At this point it seems like Elder Abuse to keep her in power, and she can't possibly be an effective lawmaker.

The trade comes just before Congress is set to pass the $54 billion "CHIPS-plus" bill, which would invest in US chip manufacturing and research.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi husband, Paul Pelosi, has sold all of his stock in NVIDIA on Tuesday as Congress is set to pass the "CHIPS-plus" bill.

Paul Pelosi sold between $1 million and $5 million worth of NVIDIA stock, or 25,000 shares, at an average price of $165.05 on July 26, according to a mandatory congressional financial disclosure filed Tuesday by the speaker. Members of Congress are only required to report the values of their trades in broad ranges.

The disclosure states that by selling the shares, Paul Pelosi suffered a "total loss of $341,365."

While there's nothing here that even remotely seems like "insider trading", it's just such bad optics.

It's not out of the ordinary for members of Congress to visit Taiwan, but a Speaker hasn't visited in 25 years.

I honestly don't have a good answer to that question at all.

Almost certainly to reassure leadership of our security commitments to Taiwan given the recent passage of the CHIPS act
