You can definitely play without a mic. I've done so quite a bit with randoms. Played a few missions last night with @JPDunks4 @Mercury33 and @ARZ without my mic because I was on the phone at the same time. We accomplished our missions for glorious Super Earth with no problem.

We were also playing on Medium.

Harder difficulties def need a mic.

I know the developers said they wouldn't add in PvP because they want to avoid any toxicity forming in the community, but I took that as Helldivers vs. Helldivers, but what about Helldivers vs. player controlled bugs/robots ala Left 4 Dead? That might work.

Let's allow the development team stabilize the servers first, shall we?

Well yes of course, that should be their number one priority right now, I meant in a future update much further down the line from now. Just a random thought I had while bored at work.

Hell I don't even own the game yet, which I suppose should really change soon so I can hopefully hop in and play with some of you guys.

Read this game uses an anti-cheat called nProtect GameGuard, and reading the complaints about that AC, make me second guess installing this game on my computer :s

Doubt Arrowhead could/would change to a less controversial, and invasive AC at this point either.

were they communicating? bc a fireteam with no mics is def going to hard as the game progresses. we did a side mission and had to align a comm array in the right direction. someone needs to stand at the terminal and the other person needs to go rotate the array. only way we were able to do it was shooting when it was in the right spot.

Helldivers 2 is making milestones in the war against server load. While its latest patch was just to prepare for its unexpected playerbase, I can at least personally report that my quickplay and public games issues have been fixed—no more trawling the Discord for fellow soldiers to deploy with.

Meanwhile, Arrowhead Games' Johan Pilestedt has continued to be uncharacteristically—and refreshingly—outspoken on Twitter/X for a CEO, replying to fans with a mixture of reassurance and sassy remarks. To his credit, however, he's aware that the situation isn't exactly ideal.

To one player mourning an empty wallet in the face of players' rave reviews, Pilestedt replied: "If you have no cash, get it later. While we made a really fun game it's worth waiting until the servers can support the capacity … As a CEO I of course want the game to be as profitable as possible, but if you spent your last $ and got stuck in server queues I'd be [heartbroken]."

In a separate comment, he confirms that Sony has been sending engineers to help with the back-end. However: "It takes time away from our engineers to onboard new ones" says Pilestedt—which tracks. Online games are complex beasts, each holding their own unique server infrastructure with its own quirks.

As noted on Monday by Christina Pollock (a writer and game developer who recounted Dauntless' turbulent debut) the slightest breeze can knock the whole house of cards down unexpectedly, and in multiple ways.

Any engineers currently working on Helldivers 2 would need to train up their new peers, even if they're the brightest minds in the back-end trenches. Unfortunately, expanding server capacity is a little more complicated than gunning down Automatons.

Pilestedt also gave a "massive shout-out" to his team's engineers—a group of four people—as they've been working on expanding server capacity by "[five times] the max of what they designed for in one week, and are now looking to go beyond."

"I don't think you understand what a massive feat this is," he said. "It's like tuning a Vespa to compete in F1."

I've done that mission without mics. The person at the terminal can press a button that tells which direction you have to point the dish in. There's also an audio cue for the person turning the dish that sounds when the dish is in the right direction. They have to design these missions to be able to done solo as well. I'm not saying playing without a mic is ideal, byt it CAN be done. I don't necessarily like chatting with people I don't know or sometimes I'm playing while on the phone, so if I'm playing with randoms, I'll hav voice chat disabled. They did a REALLY good job with in game chat options so if one, or a couple of people don't have mics, they can still communicate with the team. As @JPDunks4 said, this will probably not work at higher diffculties, but on medium it's doable.

Yeah I feel like this would get more attention if it weren’t for the server issues. It’s a bummer because I’m not going to buy the game because of this and I feel like in another timeline Arrowhead could have been convinced to ditch it.

Lol yes the other 3 of us were. Plus it was on Medium which a couple of us could solo no problem.

For that Comm Relay, there is a very slight “beep” noise when you get the dish in place. Tough to hear but once you know what to listen for it’s easy.

It's not even the fact that it's a kernel level anti cheat since most of the good, effective ones are anyway and I've played games like Warzone that use them, it's that this particular AC is so sketchy, and has a lot of negativity around it, apparently not even uninstalling properly once the game is uninstalled.

I'll probably crack anyway and still get this game, but damn I'd feel a lot more assured if they decided to switch to a different system. Probably only went with this one because it was cheap or something.

One of 2024's most renowned games has proven that even discontinued software can be employed to create something stunning.

Quote

Every once in a while, we witness artists and game creators diverging from mainstream development software, choosing to replace common tools like Unity and Unreal Engine with obscure applications rarely seen in use. It appears that Arrowhead Game Studios was one such developer, who, as recently discovered, employed a dead engine that you can no longer access to power their sensational third-person shooter – Helldivers II.

Brought to our attention by Lead Game Developer Andy Touch, it turns out that the second installment in the Helldivers series is powered by the same engine as the original 2015 game, with that being Bitsquid, known in its later years as Autodesk Stingray.

Built with support for the most popular PC, console, and mobile platforms in mind, Bitsquid was utilized in the creation of various games, including Escape Dead Island, Hamilton's Great Adventure, Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and, as mentioned above, the original Helldivers. Following its acquisition by Maya and 3ds Max developer Autodesk in 2014, the engine was integrated into the company's game development toolkit and renamed Autodesk Stingray.

While on the surface, it seems like a good idea to leverage the same software for both the original game and its sequel, the thing you need to know about Autodesk Stingray is that it has been discontinued since 2018. Consequently, it has not received any updates in the past six years and has been officially declared dead by its developers.

As Andy noted, there's a strong possibility that Helldivers II entered production before the discontinuation of the engine, which likely prompted Arrowhead to take matters into their own hands and enhance the software themselves, molding it into the tool they needed instead of abandoning their progress.

I guess being "unable to access" is something both the engine and the actual game have in common!

Finally got to try it out after a few days of ownership. It's a lot of fun but it has a lot of problems beyond just the server issues. My first time loading into my ship the game froze. My very first mission the random that joined me got stuck interacting with something, so I had to kill him to reset. Another mission landed me on top of some geometry, and the game clearly didn't know what to do with me 100 ft in the sky, though I did make it down fine. I think the map could use some work, though I think the Konami code ux for strategems is nifty.

I got up to level 5 and unlocked "challenging" difficulty and decided to give that a go. I got paired with a lvl 15 diver, which was good because I was unprepared. After I started using his weapons I became much more useful. I think I'll unlock a few more things before doing that again, but it was fun to have a helpful teammate in a difficult mission and to get a glimpse of what the game looks like after a few levels up.

I don't think this is a game that I'll play forever and it doesn't seem like something that would consume me, but it is a lot of fun to mess around in. I think the fate of this game is going to rest in the hands of the community. Right now everyone is just figuring things out, and if people can remain genuinely helpful and co-op minded, then I may keep playing here and there for a while. If people end up getting hyper focused on optimization, it could suck the fun out of it.

Surprisingly good.

I have had the problem of finding a group through. I'm guessing people aren't turning their matchmaking to private when they want to be alone. I had a run this morning where as soon as I joined people (via the quickplay button), they either kicked me or left immediately five times in a row. In a couple cases even when joining a mission in progress.

It’s decent. Goes without saying doesn’t compare to playing with a buddy or ideally with several buddies. But it works well enough. My understanding is the game doesn’t scale to number of players (aka make it easier cuz you just have 1-2), so playing on even medium or shit even easy with 2 people for certain types of missions was hard for two of us.

Although there seems to be some inconsistency in “easy” between mission styles. Most of the time it is easy but there’s an escort type right now that sucks on basically any difficulty.

Some of my fears are already coming true as players try to "optimize" their time. I played a bunch of games yesterday and found it difficult to find a group that wasn't just trying to farm the easiest defend missions. I saw similar complaints on reddit who blamed the phenomenon on youtubers and streamers telling people the fastest way to level up is to just grind those missions, but who knows. They are the easiest for sure, but you hardly get any samples and I just don't find them that fun. I think the joy in this game is in the craziness that is occurring as you're exploring the map and trying to complete the objectives. When I'd start my own mission and hope people join, people would just drop out. Playing on hard with only two people at ~15 is not great.

Hopefully that was an aberration and not a new normal. The existing matchmaking system is dead simple, but it makes it difficult to find players who want to play in a specific way. There's no good way to advertise that you want to collect all the samples and not just rush main objectives.

That said, I've overall had pretty good luck in finding random teammates, and when you do have a full squad that is working together on harder difficulties, the game really comes alive. It's a great sandbox to muck around in and I still have plenty of toys to unlock.

Interesting... I've found the opposite to be true personally. People that join on me usually want to go around the map completing as many objectives as they can and collecting the most samples they can find. I just did a couple of missions today and that was they case... we roamed the map completing as many secondary objectives and finding as many secrets as we could find. Maybe it was because I was in my own game and people joined on me? I don't know. It wasn't just High level players... in most of the matches I play, I'm the highest level player (level 21) or there's one guy my level or higher. I'd suggest starting a mission on your own so you players can see what mission you're running... folks who want to XP farm won't join if it isn't a simple defend mission or destroy X many bots mission. Also I'd recommend not trying to tackle Hard missions unless you have a full squad. I'm level 21 and have yet to solo a challenging mission solo.

That's kind of the problem. I want to play on hard, but I find it a struggle right now with fewer than 3 people. So if I start a mission on hard and can't get two other people to stick around, it's kind of a problem.

Hopefully I just had bad luck with matchmaking and it won't be the norm going forward. I had good luck this morning. Found a couple groups that were generally good teammates playing well and working together and were playing through all the missions in a group (whatever that's called).
