Commissar SFLUFAN Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Microplastics found in human blood for first time | Plastics | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Exclusive: The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may lodge in organs Quote Microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood for the first time, with scientists finding the tiny particles in almost 80% of the people tested. The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may lodge in organs. The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as microplastics cause damage to human cells in the laboratory and air pollution particles are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year. Huge amounts of plastic waste are dumped in the environment and microplastics now contaminate the entire planet, from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest oceans. People were already known to consume the tiny particles via food and water as well as breathing them in, and they have been found in the faeces of babies and adults. The scientists analysed blood samples from 22 anonymous donors, all healthy adults and found plastic particles in 17. Half the samples contained PET plastic, which is commonly used in drinks bottles, while a third contained polystyrene, used for packaging food and other products. A quarter of the blood samples contained polyethylene, from which plastic carrier bags are made. Quote
LazyPiranha Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Given that they found it in such a large portion of the sample, I’m just assuming it means they’ve never looked before. Quote

Kal-El814 Posted March 24, 2022 Posted March 24, 2022 Look if they didn’t want me to eat the board game tokens from games like Azul, they shouldn’t have made them look delicious. That’s not on me. Quote

Commissar SFLUFAN Posted April 6, 2022 Author Posted April 6, 2022 Microplastics found deep in lungs of living people for first time | Plastics | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Particles discovered in tissue of 11 out of 13 patients undergoing surgery, with polypropylene and PET most common Quote Microplastic pollution has been discovered lodged deep in the lungs of living people for the first time. The particles were found in almost all the samples analysed. The scientists said microplastic pollution was now ubiquitous across the planet, making human exposure unavoidable and meaning “there is an increasing concern regarding the hazards” to health. Samples were taken from tissue removed from 13 patients undergoing surgery and microplastics were found in 11 cases. The most common particles were polypropylene, used in plastic packaging and pipes, and PET, used in bottles. Two previous studies had found microplastics at similarly high rates in lung tissue taken during autopsies. Quote
CayceG Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 I wonder what this will mean for long term health effects. Because I don't think this is going to get the same response that removing lead from the atmosphere got. Quote
stepee Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 Sounds like the problem is we need bigger plastic! Quote
ThreePi Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 Plastic is strong and durable and lasts a long time. Why wouldn't I want to be partially made up of something as strong and durable as plastic? Quote
Keyser_Soze Posted April 6, 2022 Posted April 6, 2022 We just need to heat the human body so hot that the plastics melt. Easy! Quote
Ricofoley Posted April 7, 2022 Posted April 7, 2022 Let's try and be optimistic here. Maybe microplastics will exactly cancel out COVID lung scarring. You know, like Three Stooges Syndrome. Quote
