Don't Look Up - Adam McKay makes Armageddon a Comedy

Looks incredible. The trailer gives away that the comet enters the Earth's atmosphere, and in any other movie I would assume that's a spoiler and that it hits the Earth and kills everyone...but in this one, I assume that something happens and no one dies (or just some third world people) and then the rich/powerful characters go "see, nothing to worry about in the first place!" And then no lesson is learned (which is the lesson of the movie).

I've always been a huge fan of Adam McKay and always felt he was meant for more than just the Will Ferrell comedies he was doing (even though those are mostly excellent, except for Anchorman 2). I really liked both The Big Short and Vice a lot. But apparently this is a really bad film, guess we'll see:

Don't Look Up is one of the worst movies of the year, although Leonardo DiCaprio still turns in a memorable performance.

Adam McKay’s obvious and condescending satire feels like a mediocre ‘SNL’ sketch stretched to 2.5 hours.

It’s at 58% on RT which is still in the mixed range. It could still drop more, but as of now I’m still willing to give it a chance.

The average rating on RT is a 6.4, which is still in the "good" range, and pretty much means that the people who *did* like it thought it was really good.

Satire like this doesn’t work in our current reality, I feel. Not but a handful of chuckles for me.

It's a shame because the premise is incredibly funny (that even an imminent asteroid/comet impact could be waived off as fake news/inconsequential).

Judging from history, I think that the next decade will be filled with mostly escapist fantasy since as you said, the current reality will probably drive people to avoid darker stuff.

I’m still interested in seeing this but I feel like the election of Trump sorta destroyed satire in general. Or at least has made it much harder to pull off.

Maybe it’s because of my lowered expectations but I liked this one just fine. It’s almost better to not view as a comedy. It might have worked better if it leaned more into the farce side of the premise but oddly enough I found the ending to be moving. For something this serious it hits a little too close to home given the last presidency. A lot of viewers will be turned off by that alone.

I agree that it's way too long, especially since it only really has one joke. I also agree with @Komusha that the tone is never really fitting. It's alternating between entirely too cartoonish and not quite cartoonish enough.

That said, I did feel the frustration of the main characters, which I think is very much the point.
