Quake / Quake 2 were some of the best times I had playing games online.  Odds are it was because it was new and I was a teen with tons of free time...but Rocket Arena was just so much fun....and you didn't have to mute everyone since voice chat wasn't really a thing back then.

The original Quake had slightly more story than the original Doom.

Very slightly more.

They should have zero story in any of these games.

DOOM 2016/2020's story should have been... "Oh no!  Demons! I'm going to shoot them in the face!"

Couldn't they both be summarized as humans opened a portal to another world which leads to them being overrun by murderous demons/aliens?

Speaking of Quake, today is the 25th anniversary of its release!

After revolutionizing PC gaming with Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, id Software pulled off a hat trick with Quake, released on June 22, 1996. Quake mixed polygonal 3D graphics, networking, and grunge into a groundbreaking hit with wide influence. Here’s what made it special.

I enjoy the Quake 2 -> Quake 4 universe, I actually think Q4 was better than what people were shitting on back when it came out. Yet with that said I would love for them to go back into the more gothic style of Quake 1 again.

I really liked Quake IV as well!

Remember the part where you were Stroggified?

Yeah but really the memory I have the most of Q4 is the improved portal physics in multiplayer. Nothing more fun than killing others by lobbing rockets and grenades through the portals at other players.

Earlier today the schedule for Quakecon 2021 went up, with a surprising bit of spoiler-y news to be found if one clicked into the calendar event for Friday's "Let's talk Quake" event. John Linneman of Digital foundry will be talking with Jerk Gustaffson of Machine games about a "revitalized edition" of the game Quake. Which appears to be a co-production between iD and Machine Games.

I admit I never really liked the Quake games despite being a massive Doom fan. I loved the atmosphere and soundtrack in the first one but always thought the guns and hit impacts felt weak and boring compared to Doom so I never even finished it back in the day. Quake 2 looked amazing when it came out and the gameplay was much better but I didn't like the switch in aesthetics at all so I dropped that one eventually as well. I'd play a reboot with the original's atmosphere etc. in a heartbeat and maybe it'll be another shot at getting a non-cartoon-cheese version of Doom since they're going all out with the Nickelodeon shit in that series now.

And Quake 3 Arena, the best one, you never played. :(

I am concerned in that I find Doom too slow. I like what they are going for but I feel the game would be more enjoyable with Quake 3 Arena speeds. Be cool if they made the PC version as fast as Quake 3 and keep the current speed of Doom for the Xbox version.
