‎The same game we saw on PS4 but taken to the next level thanks to the graphic power of PS5 and some interesting additions that bring even more to Kojima's work.‎

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is a game with a ton going on. It’s an easy recommendation for anyone looking for a creative and enjoyable experience. The only question for those who played the original version is whether or not they enjoyed their first trip through Kojima’s brilliant creation. If you did, or if this is your first time playing Death Stranding, you are absolutely going to love every second of the Death Stranding Director’s Cut.

I don't have much to say about Death Stranding that I didn't already say back in 2019. The game remains the excellent and unique piece of art that it is. The "Director's Cut" stuff is an absolute bust and I'm disappointed that such cynical "blockbusterisms" have been applied to Kojima's work in particular. However, this is more than outweighed by the utterly different tone that eminates from the game, now that it comes across as reflective rather than prophetic. It might be sobering, but it's worth musing over.

With this remake upgrade, again with Sam, in a more comfortable game experience, to go back to this "connected journey", presumably there will be a new feeling.

Every new line of code written enhances the original experience, bringing new ways for existing players to enjoy Death Stranding again. Whether you're here for exploring the factory and playing with the new toys like I am or want to challenge friends for top spot on the racing and firing range leaderboards, odds are there is a reason for you to come back. Reworked missions will aid new players into the world more smoothly than the original release, too. I definitely felt as though the difficulty spike wasn't nearly as harsh thanks to this. Keep in mind that while the Director's Cut expands and adds delicate touches here and there, this is still a game that requires patience and time for the best results.

Screen Rant - 5 / 5 stars

Quote

New Director's Cut content - including the Maser Gun, Firing Range, Racing Track, Cargo Catapult, and more - offer new experiences and tools for those who have played Death Stranding before, but are spread across the course of the game to accompany the steady inundation of items and activities the game already had. For new players, this means the Director's Cut is the definitive version of Kojima Productions' masterpiece. It delivers an incredibly pertinent story, with more content than ever before, to be experienced through ingenious integration of the PlayStation 5's DualSense.

TheGamer - 5 / 5 stars

Quote

Death Stranding remains a bizarre masterpiece on PS5, and the director’s cut only further cements that reputation with a number of worthwhile new ideas that enhance the act of delivering packages across a picturesque landscape of nothingness. The story of Sam Porter Bridges is overblown and wondrous, taking hold of you and refusing to let go as you’re dragged into an adventure that takes the medium to places it has never been before. It’s mindless self-indulgence of the highest order, and it’s rare to see a game deliver upon its overarching ambition in such a bold, uncompromising way in the modern era. For that very reason, it deserves to be celebrated.

In 2019 as in 2021, death Stranding remains an essential for the curious who are looking for something else in their PlayStation 5 game library.

Hobby Consolas - Spanish - 93 / 100

Two years after its original release, Death Stranding is still a masterpiece, with a moving story, unforgettable characters and impressive visuals. New gameplay mechanics, missions and minigames don´t add much to a game that already felt as a director´s cut.

CGMagazine - 9 / 10

Death Stranding the Director's Cut is the definitive way to experience the game and is worth checking out for those who may have missed it on other platforms.

Hideo Kojima is the physical manifestation of the Director’s Cut. Often times his idea of a nice neat package is like having a 6 hour version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I’m ever so grateful for his presence in our industry. He’s not scared to take chances and make something people don’t like, and more often than not, he makes things I like or can at least appreciate. Death Stranding is some combination of all those things. I appreciate it, enjoy playing it, and on this third playthrough became more convinced than ever that there’s something really special here for those willing to take the time to stare at their boots.

Everyeye.it - Italian - 9 / 10

Quote

Death Stranding makes its debut on PlayStation 5 with a Director's Cut that, while offering players a good dose of unpublished content, does not consistently alter the quality balance of Hideo Kojima's latest work. The ludonarrative essence of the production has therefore remained the same as two years ago, with all its merits, its defects and its overflowing expressive power.

GameMAG - Russian - 9 / 10

Death Stranding: Director's Cut is great way to revisit the game, especially if you enjoyed your first playthrough. And now it's time to go back to the roads most taken with your fellow BB in hands. Unity always beats isolation, you only need to make the first step.

While the new features and missions are nice, the world around us has made Death Stranding better.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut offers a second chance to make a first impression, offering a great technical presentation for the PS5 platform and DualSense controller.

Push Square - 9 / 10

Death Stranding Director's Cut is a fantastic port of a fascinating game. It introduces lots of new features that enrich the experience, the graphics and performance get a big boost, and PS5's bells and whistles are all put through their paces. It all adds up to make this the best way to play Kojima Productions' insane adventure, whether you're new to the experience or want to pick up where you left off. It's not going to change anyone's mind one way or the other - it's still Death Stranding, like it or not - but Director's Cut certainly presents the game in the best light.

Siliconera - 9 / 10

Now Death Stranding Director’s Cut is on its way to the PS5 and makes the original game less cumbersome to play, more appealing to return to, and prettier than before.

SomHráč.sk - Czech - 90 / 100

Quote

Death Stranding Director's Cut is an excellent game, but the two-year old original title was already excellent as well. The new content is nice, but don't expect wonders. The game still remains an one of the kind masterpiece, but this rerelease doesn't really offer anything groundbreaking.

Twinfinite - 4.5 / 5

Quote

Death Stranding Director’s Cut continues to impress with its fearless commitment to fetch quests on top of fetch quests, and again, it’s not going to change your mind if you didn’t already buy into what it was selling back in 2019. But if you did, the Director’s Cut enhances and enriches that original experience, and you’ll be happy you jumped back into this one.

We Got This Covered - 4.5 / 5 stars

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is an oddly named excuse to get addicted to delivering all over again. The visuals are stunning, but the haptics and new gadgets take things to even greater heights. Its themes have never been more relevant, and its gameplay never more fun.

The Games Machine - Italian - 8.8 / 10

Quote

On the PS5 Death Stranding is as beautiful as ever and this Director's Cut gives players a bunch of new and (quite) interesting content, but not enough to make it feel really new and fresh.

Worth Playing - 8.7 / 10

Quote

I very much enjoyed Death Stranding on the PS4, and that hasn't changed after playing through Death Stranding: Director's Cut on the PS5. It's not perfect in its overall story and gameplay execution, and it isn't a game that everyone will enjoy. If you can get past that, it's still is a uniquely rewarding experience that looks and plays better on a PS5, and it's one of the few PS5 titles that doesn't demand a fortune to upgrade for existent owners. At the same time, the content additions are a bit thin and don't add a lot to the experience, so the upgrades in visuals and performance are likely the main reason to upgrade your version.

Wccftech - 8.6 / 10

Easily the best way to experience building bridges across America, Death Stranding Director's Cut is less of the final cut one might expect from Kojima himself and moreso a collection of novel enhancements to make this the best looking and best feeling way to experience this unique title.

Merlin'in Kazanı - Turkish - 85 / 100

Death Stranding Director's Cut took a good game from Playstation 4 and brought it to the next generation in the best possible way. Every Playstation 5 player should try this game.

PlayStation Universe - 8.5 / 10

Quote

Though the additions to this newly reinvigorated version of Death Stranding might be considered to be superfluous by die-hard Kojima fans, there's no denying that Death Stranding Director's Cut is the definitive version to play Kojima's most recent opus on console, thanks to an opulent visual makeover and a wealth of quality of life improvements. Though still remaining divisive at its core, Death Stranding Director's Cut is absolutely the best way to see the hype surrounding Kojima's most esoteric work.

Press Start - 8.5 / 10

Quote

Death Stranding: Director's Cut is easily the best way to play the game. The additions are numerous and bound to help players make their journey across America much more palatable. If you're someone who gave up on Death Stranding because you found it to be too frustrating or long-winded, the Director's Cut additions could be enough to lure you back. If you're someone who's played the game to death already, there's probably not a whole lot of reason to come back given how little extra content there is.

‎Who is this new version of Death Stranding for? The answer is extremely simple: for those who enjoyed and appreciated the work of metal Gear's father. Of course, it is also a product designed for those who at the time, overlooked it for whatever reason. If you are in this situation and you are already the proud owner of a PS5, I would tell you that this is the best opportunity to try one of the best titles of the last generation of consoles and discover for yourself, why it is that we say it is so special. I repeat, as someone who spent several tens of hours two years ago with the game, I would have loved to have an expansion the size of Iki Island that allowed me to know more about the lives of all these characters who made me go through such good times, even so, it was a delight to go back through these desolate landscapes with Sam Porter Bridges.‎

Attack of the Fanboy - 4 / 5 stars

Quote

Overall, Death Stranding Director’s Cut is solid as a PS5 port, but underwhelming as a Director’s Cut. If you were expecting a big new story expansion akin to Iki Island, then you’ll be disappointed by this Director’s Cut. If you just want to jump back into Death Stranding for a few hours in 60 FPS, then you’ll have a decent time. I wish more could have been done on the story front, but Death Stranding Director’s Cut is still a solid experience on PS5.

Daily Star - 4 / 5 stars

Quote

If you played the original and feel ‘done’ with it, there may not be enough big tweaks to bring you back for another go. But the upgrade price point is good and it’ll definitely appeal to those gamers who missed out on playing the original and now fancy jumping in on PS5

GameByte - 8 / 10

The improvements to the early part of the game really help you feel ready for the rest of your adventure. Although it shares elements of lots of games it also does a great job in feeling unique. There isn’t much else like Death Stranding and the Director’s Cut helps refine an intriguing game to be the best it can be.

Gameblog - French - 8 / 10

Death Stranding Director's Cut comes to rekindle the flame for this extraordinary epic. The new additions allow you to see this adventure from a new angle. And innovative by the addition of new features targeting neophytes. It is above all to them that this title is addressed.

GamingTrend - 80 / 100

Quote

Death Standing: Director's Cut is the definitive version of the game. It's gorgeous and runs at 60 frames per second, while including everything from the PC version. The new missions are a bit too light on content, but they round out the experience nicely.

Nerdburglars - 8 / 10

Quote

Death Stranding: Directors Cut adds a lot of new content that greatly enhances the base game. For those who have never played Death Stranding, the Directors Cut will provide a version of the game that is far more exciting and enjoyable than the original. For returning players, you may not find enough substance to make it a worthwhile purchase. The firing range, racetrack and new mission will give you some moments of fun but unless you plan on playing the game from the start, the new content will not occupy your time for long.

Oyungezer Online - Turkish - 8 / 10

They polished the original game a little bit and drove it back in front of us with a little innovation. I have no say in the quality of the game, they will play for the first time.

PSX Brasil - Portuguese - 80 / 100

Quote

Death Stranding: Director's Cut on PlayStation 5 is without a doubt the best way to get the most out of the title. If you haven't played it yet, this is the perfect opportunity to give the game a try. Unfortunately, its add-on content doesn't shine as bright as it should, and much of it could have been offered through free updates.

Saudi Gamer - Arabic - 8 / 10

Quote

An enhanced version of a polarizing game, one with a unique gameplay mechanic that can become monotonous and an intriguing story that falls apart at the end. This release doesn't change much, but it makes a stunning game look even more beautiful, and adds some appreciated tools and variety to help you on your journey

IGN - 7 / 10

Death Stranding Director's Cut is more accessible than the original, but feels like a compromised version of the director's vision.

Death Stranding Director's Cut improves the flow of the campaign considerably by cutting down on a lot of the grind. If you've never played the original, you'll find a truly bizarre experience only made possible by the mind of Hideo Kojima.

Brand-new players, by all means. Tear into this poignant, artisanal, off-the-rails hiking video game, even if it’s slow at first. And don’t forget to smash that “like” button.

If you've never played Death Stranding, I think you should. Whether it's the original release or the new Director's Cut, the game is worth experiencing. Not to say it's perfect by any means (read Game Informer's review for a second opinion). But there's nothing like Death Stranding. And there may never be again; I struggle to think Sony or any other publisher will ever let Kojima be this free a second time – at least not with this kind of budget. That's what makes Death Stranding worth experiencing. Gravity Gloves, race tracks, and cargo catapults are just icing on the cake.

So here’s the thing – Death Stranding is Death Stranding. It is a highly divisive game that some will love while others will hate with a passion. If you don’t like it, nothing in the Director’s Cut will change your mind about the game. If you do like it? This version simply elevates the experience.

Polygon - Polygon Recommends

Quote

Death Stranding is replete with questions of whether any of this is worth it - the solidarity and togetherness of it all. If catastrophes will keep piling up, and humans will continue to isolate, and communities will continue to fracture, then what's the point of ever coming together? For all of its preaching, the game doesn't end with tidy answers. To tie a bow on these questions in a final cutscene would undercut all of the work its gameplay has already done more elegantly than its thousands of words.

Shacknews - Unscored

Quote

The Death Stranding Director’s Cut adds enough new tools and toys for players to utilize to make the experience worth replaying for those diehard fans. And for those that were unsure about getting in, the shuffling and redistribution of tools ensures that the early game is more approachable, while still retaining the sense of scale and progression offered at launch. The other features, like the firing range, racing track, and new location elevate an already rich experience. So collect your order and tie up your laces, because you’ll want to walk another 500 miles or more to experience what’s on offer here.

A pandemic later, Death Stranding feels even more powerful, meaningful and precious. A once in a lifetime experience that you should definitely live, to learn more about yourself and how big our achievements can be when we are determined to work together.

Strap a baby to your chest, lob some grenades made of out your own urine, deliver a pizza, zipline across America, laugh, cry, die, and then take a nice dip in a hot spring that helps your bowel movements. It’s nuts and it’s still brilliant, but with 60fps and a new gun or two.

Death Stranding Director's Cut adds new content to the PS5 version of the hit Kojima Productions game, but are these additions largely superfluous?

Quote

Death Stranding Director’s Cut does deserve to be judged on its own merits, yes, but it also begs analysing in the context of who spearheaded the creation of this game. The re-release of Death Stranding is an indulgence from Hideo Kojima, an exercise in what a creative can reasonably get away with when they’ve already got a solid foundation with which to work with and a dedicated audience that’ll return no matter the product. If Death Stranding was the rockbed on which America’s societal identity was challenged in the context of disparate players helping one another, juxtaposed against Nicolas Winding Refn dropping dead every 20 minutes and a 1980s version of Lindsay Wagner excruciatingly referencing Super Mario, the Director’s Cut is a gleeful second helping, dripping in self-indulgence from one of the most recognisable game creators on the planet.

I did the $10 upgrade so I can go back to this now! You get upgrades to the digital deluxe version as well with the ps5 upgrade so that’s a neat little extra. For $10 it’s a pretty good deal with all the updates.

Looks wise for me the surprise is how great the widescreen mode works. At least for me, (I do sit a little too close to a 65” tv in my bedroom so I can lose a little screen real estate) it’s kind of perfect. Setting it to widescreen and quality gets you 60fps with the same iq as native 4k and a greater fov. It looks really quite stunning.

Forgot this was only a $10 upgrade. Now I'm glad I didn't put a lot of time into the game originally. Definitely upgrading to this.

I really can't tell if I'd like or hate this game.

I expected to fucking hate it and it ended up being one of the games of the gen for me. It's an oddly hypnotic, addictive and fascinating game but when you watch videos, it looks like the opposite. Despite loving it and still thinking about it regularly, it's one of those games I'm not sure I'd recommend because it's super weird and I'm not sure who would like it particularly.

Wanted to circle back to this thread because I finally got a chance to start a new PS5 Director's Cut playthrough. I'm in the middle of Chapter 3 by now and the additions so far are all nothing but improvements in my opinion. The addition of the Ruined Factory especially, with a much better introduction of combat/stealth in the opening area, really lifted the pacing and the location is great.

I also really like the Firing Range and the many small QoL improvements and additional items so far. None of them suddenly make the game easier, fundamentally different or anything. I think they simply improve the pacing and options available.

Also, the game is fucking gorgeous on PS5.

This is still on my list to really get to but I would say it’s worth $10 @Biggie, it’s a pretty decent value because of the plethora of added gameplay content. Really seeing a lot of people coming around more to the game and appreciating it in this version which has me excited to dive in maybe after Deathloop. It also of course looks and plays much better at 60fps, and I think the widescreen mode is gorgeous.

One game I'm waiting on for a ps5 and haven't had any part of it spoiled for me. This and Ratchet and Clank I'm just waiting till I'm with console, same with the spiderman games, havent played or watched any story content or spoilers other than trailers. Only good thing about the scarcity of the ps5 is the games out early will be dirt cheap. Demon souls, R&C, Ghosts (upgrading that one if possible), etc. Gotta find the positives where you can I guess.....

Why wait? Get it for the PC, I'm sure your rig is highly capable.

Simply because I'm backlogged from hell and back like always. Just getting the Series X didn't help and that's a fun thing. I was really content with my PC lately, grateful to have built it when I did and glad I spent a good amount matching the i7 9700k / 2080Ti. Knowing this PC holds it's own and will continue to do so in these crazy times is humbling too. I have the XSX hooked up in the Home Theater plugged into my LGC1 and it's just jaw dropping gorgeous along with just the bad ass sound system we already have in there and are only going to make better once the TV is paid off. I don't need to buy Death Stranding anytime soon, must finish this small amount of games I have committed some serious time too or I'll end up never finishing them and I'm getting tired of doing this. Especially to some fantastic games like Ghosts, and Far Cry 6, even Metroid on the Switch that is also hooked up to the LGC1. Got tired of all you guys drooling over that new Oled switch I thought I'd one up you and see what it's like on the 83" lol. Thank good ness I finished God of War, what a fantastic game even though that took over 3 years.

I know we seem to always feel the grass is always greener yadda, yadda but I really did want the PS5 this generation. My PC like you said was doing me just fine, but I'm grateful to have the XSX I / we know the difficulties in getting one for some. I did sign up for the "CHANCE TO GET ONE FROM" playstation.com I guess we'll see if that goes anywhere. Man I just wish I could just pay 600 for a disc version and be done with it, but I have so much, I really should slow down and smell the roses a bit for awhile. Not saying I will, or that I can, I just know that I should.....

Is this worth the $10 upgrade @stepee

I have quite a bit of time in the DC version and currently playing, I'll second that it definitely is worth the $10. There are small additions that improve the pacing noticeably, at least to me. Stuff like them introducing a bike with a small cargo trailer in between the bike and truck, the addition of a location and a full stealth mission in the first chapter and so on.
