FFVIIR deserves the recognition its getting.  It's not quite GoTY quality and has its controversial bits, but it ended up being a great RPG in its own right.  Between it and DQXI, SquareEnix is finding their groove again.

I kind of thought they were getting there with FFXV. It was like 75% of a great game, which was a bummer, because when FFXV was good, it was *really* good. I haven't played FFVIIR yet as I don't own a playstation, but I'm looking forward to it.

I did hear Kingdom Hearts 3 was pretty mediocre, though.

I'm kinda surprised to see TLOU2 isn't cleaning up, seems like the kind of game that I'd expect to win it all. It doesn't really do much new, but I'd argue it's easily best of breed.

While I'm glad that Alyx is getting some recognition, I hoped for a bit more. I realize PC based VR is a lot to ask, but it's a great experience, and probably my personal GOTY.

I should probably play Hades.

FFVIIR is a big step up from FFXV.

First successful run on run #20. This is probably my game of the year. The speed of the action is awesome, handles great even with dashing all over the screen, and I've barely touched the surface of the boons system with all the combinations (duos, legendaries, etc.). Looks like there's a lot of endgame content as well. The story and lore is also very well done and I love the way it is revealed a bit through each run.

Gah, can't stop playing...

Hades is just a such a well made game, care was put into so much of it's design. People always say they don't like roguelites but like Hades, well that's only because they put a different type of game on top of roguelite. It's so good even Max is hooked!

Wouldn’t agree with that.  Pyre was much more of a fusion of different genres (arcade sports/rpg/visual novel).  Hades just sprinkles a few bits on top of the rogue-like core giving you more reason to return.

The difference is that Hades is just mechanically one of the best 2d action games ever, with upgrades and weapons you’re always excited to pick up.  That’s the secret sauce.
