Olive Garden Fires Manager Who Sided With Racist Customer

Olive Garden patrons reportedly launched into a racist tirade against a black server and hostess at an Evansville, Ind., location on Saturday, demanding to the manager that a white server take over the table. The manager, who acquiesced, has been fired from the chain of Italian restaurants, the company says.

Amira Donahue, a 16-year-old Olive Garden hostess, told local ABC/CW affiliate WEHT/WTVW that it started when the customer asked for hot water. Soon, the diners were dishing out prejudiced remarks, saying they didn’t want to be served by a black person, Donahue said.

“The lady also made comments about me to another co-worker,” Donahue told a reporter, “saying that I am not family-friendly, that I should work at a strip club instead of an Olive Garden, that am I even black, am I from here, am I from America — just offhand comments like that. And referring me to ‘the other one.’ ”

Instead of asking the customers to leave, the manager allegedly changed out the server for a white one. Donahue didn’t think the manager should have complied.

“I do agree that was a bad decision at the moment,” Donahue told local media. “There was a way, a better way, that this could have been handled.”

Olive Garden looked into the incident Sunday and Monday and then made the decision to dismiss the manager, company spokeswoman Meagan Bernstein wrote in a statement to The Washington Post.

“We have zero tolerance for discrimination of any kind, and the manager involved no longer works for our company,” Bernstein said. “We completed our investigation on Monday. As a result of our investigation, we made the decision to separate with the manager involved.”

Bernstein didn’t respond to questions about what prompted the probe and when the manager was let go.

So the manager got dismissed because Olive Garden doesn’t tolerate discrimination “of any kind”, but the correct answer was to discriminate against racist who just wanted a white waiter/waitress?

I’m not saying Olive Garden is wrong and manager is right. Olive Garden let the manager go to avoid bad PR. I think their excuse is bull shit.

The manager should have made them leave because they were abusive. doesn’t matter if they’re racist, sexist, or just assholes. The manager looked for the least confrontational solution. Hard to blame them for wanting to minimize confrontation. But it’s a poor message to enable that behavior in a customer and a poor way to treat your employee.

The only answer to a customer doing that was to toss them out, he didn't just ignore it he did the worst thing you can do in that situation.  I used to be a manager in the service industry and I had no problem showing customers the door if they were being abusive to staff.

When I was a manager at a movie theater in Philly, I yelled at an old lady who was treating one of my black employees like complete shit. I told her I’d toss her old ass out if she talked to any of my employees like that ever again. She tearfully apologized.

The fact that manager didn’t stick up for his employees is bullshit.

I guess you just ask for white breadsticks. That is crazy saying she wasn’t family friendly and should work at strip club. Then questions is they are American.

Her husband probably jerks off to black women in porn every night and now she can only see them as objects more sexually desirable than herself.
