James Gunn sacked from GotG 3, Disney severs ties due to previous "offensive material"

Recommended Posts

Always be careful what you put on social media. People can dig stuff up on you in an instant. I do think it's a bit of an overreaction from Disney too though. Gunn doesn't seem to be like he was in the past or at the least he knows how to control himself.

I saw a bunch of those last night...I subscribe to the belief that a talented joke teller should have no limits, and that there should be no topic that can't be made fun of if the joke is done well.

James Gunn is not a talented joke teller. Even I was offended reading them, and I typically don't get offended over anything lol

This is total bullshit! Shame on Disney for caving to the mob. Now this will just embolden the other hate mobs out there like the ones going after Kathleen Kennedy.

Jokingly linking to child pornography is pretty bad. Hopefully Gunn has actually grown as a person, but these tweets were made by a man in his 40s. It wasn’t some youthful indiscretion.

Was it confirmed to be an actual porn site?

I assumed it was a fake link. If he linked to actual CP itself under the guise of a joke...that’s waaaay worse.

Of course his jokes were in bad taste, but he has since apologized and changed as a person. The optics of this are terrible since it was the MAGA assholes just trying to get at him for being outspoken against Trump, and Disney caving to the faux outrage just sends the wrong message.

I don’t think it’s faux outrage. It may have started that way, but I know plenty of people who don’t know anything about Gunn that read some of the tweets and we’re happy to see him fired.

This though is exactly what we are going to get so long as we think it’s fine to target people for their bad opinions, jokes, etc. It is only going to happen more frequently as the social media archives fill up with our worst moments.

And it will fall on all sides of the political spectrum.

It's the same tactic used by GamerGaters and 4Channers. It's complete bullshit and Disney caved, and set a bad precedent. They knew who James Gunn was when they hired him, and he had apologized for his old jokes years ago.

You don’t care about his previous comments, others do. I also don’t think it’s accurate to say he had apologized for them, he just said he has a different approach to life and art now.

His previous comments are absolutely disgusting and I'm not defending them, but they were made a decade ago, and he has indeed apologized for them.

“I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies,” Gunn wrote. “For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out.”

You can be both disgusted at his old jokes, and realize that he's not the same person and shouldn't have been fired because conservative assholes like Posobeic, and Cernovich (who is a PizzaGate conspirator) got mad at him for making fun of Ben Shapiro and their orange, pussy grabbing overlord.

Disney hired the guy who wrote this scene:

I would have expected them to know that going into the arrangement and be more willing to stand by him. The tweets were bad, of course, but that was his humor at the time he was selected for Guardians. They knew who they hired.

He wrote them when he was 40 years old, give me a break with that “it was a decade ago!” defense. He gave a non-apology apology.

And give me a break acting like this wasn't a smear campaign.

they were apparently ok with his tweets when they hired him for the first 2 movies. There is no way you get 200+ million for a movie without the mouse crawling ALL the way up your ass.

I think you would be surprised by how backwards Disney is. I would not be at all surprised if they hadn’t seen them.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if they knew and didn’t care. Same way Nerdist scrubbed Chris Hardwick from the history of the company even though it’s now clear that a lot of people had problems with him over the years.

Are you having difficulty reading? How it started and why they pulled the trigger are two different things. The outrage is real even if it was started by right wing trolls.

Ehhhhh - let's not go overboard here.  There was absolutely no "mainstream outrage" yet, not even close.

This was a pre-emptive strike by Disney to head it off before it got to DEFCON-Roseanne level.

Oh sure insult my reading capabilities. Classy. I don't believe for a second that Disney didn't know who James Gunn was before they hired him, and had they never hired him because of those old jokes, different story, but they knew full well, and caved into a mob mentality that made the outrage seem larger than it is. This is the same company that still hires Johnny Depp who actually does horrible things like beat his wife, rather than making shitty, offensive jokes. People change; James Gunn is not the same person he was a decade ago, 40 years old or not, and he's proven that he is no longer all about making controversial, edgelord jokes, and is one of the better auteur directors for the MCU.

Like I said, I can be both mad at Gunn for making those tasteless jokes, and mad at Disney for firing him.

When you make a comment that is refuted by simply reading what I already wrote, I’m going to ask if you’re having trouble reading.

To be clear, I didn’t read anything else in this post past that and I’m not going to read anything else you have to say on this subject so don’t waste too much energy responding.

Goodnight.

Cool, good to know you're not worth debating with.
