Is Doom 3 worth playing today?

Saw that it got a stealth re-release on the consoles (Switch included).  Doom 1 and Doom 2 as well.

How does the game hold up?  The only thing I know about it is 'monster closets' and some flashlight issue that was resolved.

I picked up the newer Doom in the Steam sale, wondering if it's worth pulling the trigger on its predecessor too.

I didn't think it was particularly good when it came out -- a real departure from the other games.  If you have a big backlog, then I can guarantee you have games in it that are much more worth playing!

If you haven't played the Doom re-boot, I'm pretty comfortable saying that it is a MUCH better game than Doom 3.

Doom 3 is a large departure from the series. Slower paced combat, horrorish moments, dark environments. Its a game I wanted to like, but it just doesn't really do a good job in any one specific area. The combat isn't overly exciting or tense. Horror is probably the wrong word, but they were trying to give it that kind of atmosphere to the game. Nothing is ever really scary. I can't even remember what the premise of the game is, but if any of the other Doom games are an indication it probably wasn't anything to write home about.

Dead Space, Evil Within, Alien Isolation, RE2make, FEAR are all games I would highly recommend over Doom 3 if you want something that I think they were trying to shoot for.

If you want a DOOM game, get DOOM 2016 and Eternal is out soon.

It’s quite a slog. Some great moments but you’ll have to put up with a lot of filler.

I would actually say play the console version. They cut out a lot of the backtracking from the original PC one, and while there's the obvious graphical downgrade it still looks and plays fine. The Doom 3 BFG Edition is also back compat on the XBO.

I think that version is also a pretty big slog, but it does have some cool moments. I’m not sure I could play through the whole thing nowadays and I have a pretty good stomach for older game design.

Yes it was a great game for its time. There's a lot that goes under appreciated about it. But Doom 64 was a better Doom 3

DOOM64 is a forgotten gem of a game.

DOOM3 is okay at best. Now that the graphics are dated, there probably isn't much to recommend it at this point. Its technical prowess was honestly its main selling point. It was a decent enough game, but a really poor sequel to DOOM.

Speaking of DOOM 64...

Doom 64 has been unexpectedly rated for PC (PC Gamer)

Quote

A PEGI rating let slip the news. It's gone now, but not before Gematsu was able to capture the listing for posterity. "The Demons have returned even stronger and more vicious than before. As the only experienced survivor of the Doom episode, your commission is reactivated," it reads.

Slog is the perfect term for Doom 3. I've tried time and time again to actually play all the way through it and it's just too fucking tedious and boring. The originals are some of my favorite games of all time so I kept thinking I simply maybe didn't get it.

It kind of substitutes everything that worked flawlessly in the originals for miscellaneous "atmospheric" shit that's unfun to actually play at every turn. Ironically, both the Playstation version of Doom with its new soundtrack and lighting and Doom 64 were ten times as menacing as Doom 3 in my opinion.

I actually took the release day off work for Doom 3 and the disappointment was hideous.

I would love to play this again.

I have it on N64, but my brain can't handle playing shooters with that controller anymore.

There's Brutal Doom 64 (PC) which is a faithful recreation and all the Brutal Doom "extras" can be turned off. It also restores several previously unused Doom 64 enemies that were cut due to cartridge size etc.

Do yourself a favor and play it, it's fucking splendid, seriously.

Edit: Just wanted to check real quick and apparently there's a more strictly exact port of Doom 64 out there if you're more purist about it. Here's a comparison video. These run on basically anything as you can imagine:

Doom 3 is a 6-8 hour First Person Puzzle game of making the decision between holding a flashlight or a gun, because duct tape and taclights do not exist on Mars.

Funny part was that the game was no more fun to play even after the "duct tape" patch hit back in the day. Most of the encounter designs especially were kind of exposed as repetitive, boring and overly reliant on the amazingly fun gameplay feature of constantly toggling that stupid flashlight.

I still have a 7 foot long cardboard recreation of the DOOM64 box. It's 100% accurate to the original N64 retail box... only, you know, about 7 feet long. Got it from Babbages back in the day.

That's gotta be a pretty rare collectible. (my wife just loves it, ha)

The glue that holds it together has actually dissolved over the last 25 years or whatever, so it's currently flat and in two pieces... but I could get it back together in its full 3D state if I wanted to.

The game can be broken down to:

-Enter pitch black room

-Jump scare

-Wave of monsters

-Enter larger room

-Puzzle to get to next room/area

-Repeat

For a game reliant on jump scares it only had approximately two variations on top of it. There were attempts to mimic the old school Doom monster closets only devoid of any of the mayhem that would ensue in the originals and then there was this:

1. Enter pitch black room (yes)

2. Enemies teleport in front of you and behind you every single time allowing absolutely zero strategy

3. Take damage and screen shakes so uncontrollably people had to come up with a patch

Not to mention there was a max of maybe two or three monsters at a time, which slowed down the shooting compared to Doom/Doom II.

The more I talk about it, the more I remember how bad it actually was in terms of moment-to-moment gameplay.

I remember that specifically as well now, the encounters were always spaced out too far and lasted like five seconds because maybe three monsters or so would teleport into your area and done. The only time more monsters hit the screen that I recall were those stupid ass spiders and babies.
