Sure it is slower, but Greatswords and Ultra Greatswords have been new player weapons of choice for a long time now. I find for bosses that the more damage you can deal in a single hit the better. Fast weapons just don't seem to cut it in ER. Also, I jump attack like a motherfucker. It is literally the best way to get in a lot of damage in one hit.

I have like 30ish hours in I think, just completely addicted.  Lvl 52

 

Also haven't progressed farther north after beating Godrick.  Just spent all 30 hours exploring the opening region, Limgrave, and some of the east Caelid.  I did clear quite a few dungeons in Caelid, even though it is a very difficult region.  But get my ass kicked by a lot of the open world bosses there. 

 

Think im gonna focus on main story stuff and head north finally.

 

Unless the game completely falls off, I think it's definitely up there as one of my favorites of all time, if not the favorite of all time.

The range advantage is so good. It's makes it hard to use a halberd especially since I claymored my way through DS1 and DS3. Thankfully it seems the halbe4d is better in ER. It's easier to hit flying enemies.

I think I just think what I wrote because I never played Greatswords or anything 'heavier' in these games. I tend to stick with stuff like Falchions and so on, so this feels kind of hard for me in terms of finding openings. That being said, the jump attack on this thing is one of my favorite aspects, especially with the jump attack buff talisman, damn. It just feels punishing.

Im using a great axe and I love it, but only in some places. Axe and Board exploring inside Stormveil Castle, absolutely incredible. For bosses I dropped the shield. But outside, those birds? I had a long sword. I absolutely hated them

It is a great weapon for newbs and vets. I guess the downside is that you can make other weapons stronger faster. I have had it plus 2 for a while now, but the other sword I dual wield is +8 and deals more damage. Doesn't have bleed tho. 

Fortunately for me, I went a long time before discovering it so I was able to take it to level +6 right away and man does it pay out!

I played 8 hours today for a total of 30 hours played. I killed 3 bosses today, found golden seeds, and open the map twice by finding the pillars. 

 

I absolutely love this game. I've never been this addicted to a game in years. It's so fucking engrossing and fun to play. It's probably one of the best games I've ever played. 

 

When I'm not playing it all I do is think about playing it. I'm done for the day but I can't wait to get back at it tomorrow. 

 

Also, I love how some bosses allow you to summon help from others. I had no clue that was a feature. It makes the game so immersive. This has exceeded my expectations by a long shot.

Your Bloodhound's fang is +6? how the fuck. I've been +2 for like 15 hours. Never finding a +3 shard.

You can find a bunch in the underground River area if you haven’t done that already. Just sprint around on your horse mashing triangle and don’t stop to engage anything 😂

I'm at +7. Gonna go hunting then for plus 8 tonight based on the advice in this thread. Mmm i wonder if that underground location is a good grinding/farming spot.

Only underground area I know of is Siofra River and the wiki states it only has somber shards of 2 and 5.

That's a normal weapon. Bloodhound's fang is a special weapon. I mean, people can obvs take different paths in this game, but +6 seems pretty high for special weapon seeing as they can only go up to +10. Normal weapons go up to +25  tho.

I want to add Sekiro, Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 1, and Elden Ring to my list of games I play annually but dats mad time. Guess I could do one a year.

 

Also protip the first 100 points in physical defense are the most valuable. You get diminishing returns after. Magic is different going over 100 is ok.
