So I set an appointment for today, last week, with the cable company. They were supposed to come out and are going to run a new cable. I'm sitting around waiting and they aren't showing up so I think, "do I have the wrong day?" so I contact them and they tell me it has been rescheduled to next week. Well isn't part of the rescheduling actually contacting the person and rescheduling with them? I feel like this is a reverse Seinfeld episode

Well @Nokra here's the resolution to this.

They did indeed show up on Thursday. They were actually calling all week but I can't answer the phone in the afternoon so I thought they might have "rescheduled" again.

So a dude shows up, he's actually an hour early. These cable guys seem to have no people skills at all. Just like the guy before he didn't introduce himself, didn't say hello, didn't even say he was a cable guy. I think he might have been a contracted person or something because he didn't have the cable dude garb on. So instead of introducing himself I did it for him, "I said you're early, and then there was an awkward pause and I was like you're here to do the cable [?]" and he said he finished a job early that's why he was here.

So he was supposed to run a new cable down from "the attic" to replace the cable in the wall. Well after and hour or so he kind of failed. But he said there is a "plan b" which is to drill a hole in the wall and run it from the outside. I said the HOA probably won't like that, and it sounded sketchy but he said "some HOAs are okay with it if you hide the cable" - So I wound up letting him do it. It looks fine from the outside the only gripe is on the inside it's just an ugly cable through a drilled hole in the wall. I hope home depot has something that can make it look nice.

In the end I gained an additional 50-60+ Mbps download and 1.5+ upload speed so... no regerts? :s

So in Bangkok I got a Thai massage, and they had you get changed into special massage clothes, and I didn't button up the shirt. Then when the massage started the woman started giggling. And I said to my friend I was there with, "I'm gonna take a wild guess that the giggling is about my body hair." And then a few minutes later she started twirling it, at which point I called out to my friend that my guess was right.

Wildly inappropriate and unprofessional but hot damn was it funny.

I went back to play again a couple of days later and I got to join in on three other guys' game for a few rounds, that was

This just the regular Mario Kart arcade game that Bandai Namco makes? There was a big VR center in Kabukicho/Shinjuku that had a VR Mario Kart which was a cool little gimmick. They bulldozed the place within the past year, but I think they relocated all the VR stuff to a more family-friendly location in Ginza.

Yes regular arcade game not VR. But Mario Kart was unexpectedly boosted with a racing sim setup instead of a controller.

I always find it kind of funny that discrimination and harassment training material always goes with people being completely over the top cartoonish about it. It seems like it would be a lot more useful to show you cases that kind of just inch over the line a little bit.

Do you struggle with the concept of appropriate workplace behavior?

pretty clearly the opposite of what I'm saying

Or don't even approach the line, that's the best possible solution.

I say this as an ER nurse, as soon as my coworkers start discussing anything near those topics, I remove myself from the area or I tell them this shouldn't be discussed at work, now nobody talks about it around me. People should just work at work, this isn't a difficult concept and I don't understand how people struggle with it.

When my now gf first told me she took a contract in my ER two years ago, I immediately backed off of her, stopped flirting stopped talking and told her it's best to keep it professional/we can be friends as I wasn't trying to make her uncomfortable at work. She obviously was not ok with that answer and the rest is history, but when word got out we were dating my colleagues were shocked due to my very by the book topic workplace fraternization.

Speaking of gf, Jersey girl tried to match me at the bar last night watching the game, she can not. Was a fun game too.

People truly do not get it. At the end of one of those very obvious scenario videos we watched at met last company, one of the leads of engineering protested to the group, which consisted of about 1/3 of the company at the time, that he thought it was unfair that the corporate policy was that he couldn't look at porn on his work laptop / have porn on his work hard drive, assuming he didn't watch it at work or download it while on the work network.

Okay, you apparently think what I meant is that I want to know exactly how far I can go before HR smacks me upside the head, when what I meant is that I want to see trickier examples to help me be better able to distinguish when I should go report something (whether it's happening to me or to someone else) to HR. The cartoonishly brazen stuff in the videos doesn't really happen at my job so learning about such easy examples isn't really helfpul.

It does, you just don't know about it or see it. I was a middle manager at my last job for ten years and the shit people who reported into me would tell me on the regular was unbelievable. The stuff you think would be common sense just isn't. I've had to tell dudes they cannot talk to their female coworkers and ask them what underwear brand they wear because they didn't have panty lines on their skirt and framing it as looking to be able to tell their wife what underwear to buy does not make it better. The reaction to feedback like that was almost always shock. Or when someone was projecting their screen to me in a slide review meeting and an email preview popped up with the subject line "new office vag" and their comment was "shoot I gotta turn notifications off" followed by, again, shock when I told them we'd be talking to HR.

I wouldn't have believed until people brought it up to me all... the... time.

Entirely possible. But regardless the point was that kab had it completely backward on why I'd prefer that these trainings be about cases that aren't so flagrantly over the line. :p

Yo I was busting your balls lol

I just honestly don’t understand how it’s hard for people not to do this. I don’t even touch my gf at work.

If you're wondering about what the edge cases are, you're wildly ahead of the curve for the people that those trainings are targeting. "Man I hope I don't do a sexual harassment," doesn't occur to people who think it's okay to tell co-workers, "I wish I was 20 years younger so I could try to fuck you," because in their minds they literally said they weren't going to try, so how could that be harassment???

EDIT - again, I have had dudes come up to me after these trainings and say stuff like, "I think it's ridiculous that it could be considered harassment if I accidentally grope someone," as if we're all just constantly pratfalling and happening to grab a titty for balance.

This is honestly one of these situations where I don't think I can be hyperbolic enough. Women's expressed concerns are largely, "I'd really like to be able to work without being harassed or assaulted," and dudes are all, "pretty fucked up that John got in trouble for sending a nutscaping photo to the wrong person because Outlook autocomplete sent it to the wrong person."

Obviously not all guys are like this, blah blah blah, but you know what I mean.

I can think of a couple things I have said to women that were staggeringly stupid. I like to think I apologized adequately but I still feel badly about them. And I hope that behavior prior and after demonstrated that they were isolated events and not a pattern of larger behavior. The difference is (or at least I tell myself it is) that I realized I fucked up as soon as the words were out of my mouth and didn't need someone to tell me that what I did was out of bounds.

Again, I think the point of the "obvious" trainings are that no matter how wide the sieve, it's going to catch someone.
