My job is kinda depressing when I think about it too hard

I manage the bar for a private event venue. Mostly I do weddings, sometimes burlesque shows, it kind of varies.

Tonight I'm working an anniversary party. That's it. Just someone's anniversary.

I'm not sure what year anniversary it is. Maybe it's a big one.

They must have spent $7k before the bar tab.

It's just like... I will likely never have the money that these people have.

There's "I have enough money that I'm not really worried about rent/mortgage" money, which is mostly where I live, then there's "I'm going to drop $10k on a party for my friends and family" money.

And then there's "I'm going to buy a smaller yacht to ferry myself to my bigger yacht" money.

I’m pretty happy that I don’t interact with outside people at my job. I still occasionally have to hear about my manager losing 4K in a bad night at the casino. I’m like damn, if you want to lose that much money in a night, just write me a check. I’ll flash a bunch of strobe lights in your face to replicate the casino experience if you want.

Somewhere online recently I saw people discussing child care costs. One person in Seattle said they pay over $5,000 a month for all of their kids daycare. I can’t imagine what kind of money you’re pulling in to afford over $60k a year JUST for daycare. Maybe for that person a $10k party is a drop in the bucket.

So it's depressing because some people are spending ridiculous amounts of money that you don't have? I think the word you're looking for is jealous. "My job makes me jealous, if I think about it too hard." :p

Mostly kidding, of course. That is a ludicrous amount of money to spend on a party, IMO. Do you get paid well, at least?

I sometimes feel that way. When I do, I go to a strip club with a stack of 50 1 dollars bills. I order a 15 dollar shot, drink it, make it 'rain' on the floor and then just walk out. It's an incredible waste of money, but the other patrons and staff see my blatant disregard for it and think 'this fucking guy is a baller'. And it makes me feel like a 'baller'. All for the low cost of 65 dollars.

You're fucking baller because all that money is tax free. I don't see any pennies on the floor!

I pay $2k a month for daycare in North NJ and it’s the cheapest place in the area that is reputable. It’s more than my mortgage. In just 3 years, it went up $500.  I’m glad it’s her last year in daycare.

That’s got to be for like 3 kids in daycare and having 3 kids under 5 is a special level of hell

but at least you get $5k/year pretax to spend on child care 🫠

I’m jealous of people who believe they love their job. I find it hard to believe anyone truly enjoys the grind of work. Getting up to go to work gets worse with each day. When I encounter someone who says “I love my job” it seems so foreign to me. I don’t understand it.
