The thread of movies we haven't seen for some weird reason

Recommended Posts

Trying to find an appropriate title, but the gist is, what movies haven't you seen that people go like "WTF you haven't seen that?!"

To be fair, I've never been a huge movie buff, so there's tons of classic films I haven't seen. Tonight, I decided to finally watch Goodfellas. Husband have never seen it either. Here we go! Will post thoughts when I'm done.

Just finished it. I really liked it. Really thought Henry was gonna get whacked at the end. I went into it knowing absolutely nothing except it was about the Mafia, so everything was a surprise.

I remember reading how Joe Pesci has to make those garbled noises in Home Alone because he dropped so many f-bombs while filming this. His character was pretty great.

Think I’ll watch Scarface soon. Another I haven’t seen.

There was a while during the beginning of Covid where I would just binge movie series that I had only seen one of if all of them were streaming.  I watched all the Robocop, Jaws, Alien, and Predator movies.  Boy there is some trash in there.  I tried to watch all the Godzilla movies, but having to read the subtitles meant I had to dedicate too much attention to them.

I’ve never seen any LOTR movie.

I’ve seen Goodfellas, but there are some other big Scorseses I haven’t seen, most notably Taxi Driver and Raging Bull.

I saw Raging Bull a few years ago and weirdly can’t remember anything about it.

Godfather series here as well. It’s a wonderful life. Bunch of Hitchcock stuff I’m sure I’d love. Raging Bull and Taxi Driver also here. Apocalypse now, Deer Hunter. All the Presidents Men. There’s so many and I love this thread because I’ve been meaning to start just going through some of them.

I think it's surprising to see so many classics mentioned in this thread. It definitely happens with people but still surprising. Is it because such films at this point seem intimidating to watch? Because they aren't, they're just really good movies. Next time you want to throw in another Netflix streaming movie time waster or a mindless DC or MCU film, throw in a classic you haven't seen instead. Most classics (outside of epics like Lawrence of Arabia) aren't any longer than modern films so it's not more of a time commitment at least.

I don't watch a ton of movies in general. I prefer reading or gaming. And when I do watch stuff, I like to get invested in a good show. But there are a lot of classics I've missed over the years and I want to fix some of that.

Yeah you make more sense as not having seen some classics as I know you aren't as big into movies than reading and games, which is nice because not enough people read these days I feel like.

LOTR - none of them.

I'm sorry for your wasted life.  :rose:

I'm sure there are many classics I've never seen (the Godfather and Casablanca immediately spring to mind for me), but I also just started watching "Heat" yesterday. IIRC that movie is pretty beloved.

It makes me sad how little people read nowadays. And those who do read but limit themselves to 50 Shades and Colleen Hoover. :/

I had a longer, more rambling response that got lost, so I’ll try it again, more succinctly:

I watched a lot of “must see classics” while becoming the moderate film buff that I am today (enough that I’m “the movie guy” to family and coworkers, but greatly outpaced by you and other real ones). A lot of those movies I could maybe appreciate on some level, but can’t say I particularly enjoyed all that much. Eventually I stopped making an effort to see those classics, and unfortunately that means there’s a lot of movies that I probably would enjoy that have just completely fallen off my radar. These days, if I’m looking to fill in gaps in my film knowledge, I’m probably reaching for something made in the last 10-20 years.

Anyway, what this thread reminds me of:

I just saw Casino for the first time recently myself and thought it was really good too.

As for why I haven’t seen some classic movies, it’s different for everyone, but the main reason for me is wanting to wait for “a good time” to see them.  As in, these are movies that I want to actually pay attention since I heard good things about them, so I won’t just throw them on while playing a video game or working or whatever else I’m doing. This applies for movies as they come out as well, not just classics.

So while I’m not really into superhero movies that much either, I’ll definitely put on some pure crap instead of a classic I haven’t seen, but it’s because they serve completely different purposes (a movie I’m watching vs  more passive background noise).

That makes a lot of sense. Out of curiosity, what movies were turning you off? Everyone's mileage varies on old movies (depending on decade, etc.) so it depends on which movies you went to first. Doing Barry Lyndon before Goodfellas I could see throwing people off of doing classic movies at all. :p I'm glad you tried though! So I'm curious.

While we are talking about seminal movies of the 90s to be added to a playlist I've found a shocking amount of people haven't watched Trainspotting which is one of my favorite movies of all time.

The sequel is surprisingly good too, though obviously not as good as the original. Great film, but heavy though, be ready.

And since so many are mentioning them, a great film series watch is Martin Scorsese: Taxi Driver - Raging Bull - Goodfellas - Casino - Gangs of New York - The Departed - The Irishman. Then you get his entire "gangster" filmography. Though my personal favorite film by him is Silence, but it's a dense watch.

I’ve never even heard of that.

It's directed by Danny Boyle (28 Days Later, Sunshine, 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, etc.) with starring roles by young actors who are now famous from Ewan McGregor, Jonny Lee Miller, Ewen Bremmer, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle on down. Difficult film about drugs, but with more energy and fun than, say, Requiem for a Dream. A great watch, a must see in my opinion. Has a sequel made by Danny Boyle 20 years later with the original cast returning that's almost as good called T2: Trainspotting.
