Samsung had that already years ago. I had one... it was cool for what it was. The apple headset is standalone?

Yes, the newly announced headset has internal Apple silicon, it’s own operating system and apps.

I’d love someone to combine the tech we have right now with these birdbath glasses (xreal/rokid) just with 6dof instead of 3dof and  combined with some serious software via your phone and bam you got real AR glasses out in the wild. These companies making these glasses now don’t have the chops to get the kind of software out needed.

Thats probably the best part about all this is just knowing someone like Apple is finally working on the software side solutions to help guide AR forward to real functionality.

It’s huge for Apple to finally jump in. Regardless of how snobs feel, Apple is an absolute powerhouse in consumer electronics and computing platforms. They will do something huge here, which is draw developer and content support to their eco system in a way that others have still failed to do in a big way. And that will ultimately make platforms like Quest and PSVR stronger as well.

I would have zero surprise if Apple sells more of these things at $3500 than Sony has for PSVR2 after a year.

I'm deeply skeptical of mixed reality that doesn't have reality as passive passthrough (i.e., clear glasses), but Apple certainly seems to be giving it the college try and maybe they can pull it off. The big win here I trust apple to build a compelling OS around this kind of interaction more than almost anyone. This might not be "it" at V1, but I suspect this lets them lay a very solid foundation and I hope everyone copies everything that's good about it. Except facebook. Because fuck facebook.

This would be my biggest concern in the space where a $3500 AR headset makes sense. Apple is targeting this squarely at Microsoft. Their Hololens 2 retails for the same price, but good luck finding it for that much. I just don't know how much I'd trust Apple to build a reliable presense in this space. I can't help but imagine they'd dump them to old hardware and sparse updates as soon as they get a consumer-focused headset on the market.

Oh I don’t disagree with any of this, but at the same time was hoping for a bit more forward tech wise. It will definitely sell more than psvr2. Everyone is watching this, nobody outside of hardcore gamers even knows psvr2 exists. But yeah it’s a completely different product, this is just where people were talking about it here.

Eventually Apples play in AR ends up being something huge I just hoped the start was more compelling since they have been on it for so long it seems like. But like legend said if nothing else people can steal all their great software and usage ideas of which I’m sure there are many so it’s good stuff either way.

I think the Apple thing looked creepy as hell. Sit there and play with your kids while looking like a technology obsessed weirdo.  Laughed a few times during the reveal video.  "Stretch out the screen to make it look 100ft tall"- just picture everybody loading up Pornhub.  Comments aside, it looks neat and I'm more interested to see what it could become in another 5-10 years if they continue on with it.

I stand corrected. Apple didn't demo anything that would pit this against the Hololens. This seems even more consumer-focused than the Quest Pro and that headset is only $1000 with with a built in battery.

At $3500, who is this headset for?

Mostly @Mr.Vic20

Also, I might bite too if it looks like they actually nail it. That remains to be seen though.

In practice, this could effectively be a way to simultaneously build hype and get feedback for the eventual real product with a price and interface that works for the broader public.

To the shock of all, I just don't see the value yet. The software will make or break this product, and I suspect that generation 2 of this platform will focus on a more price conscious solution. I further speculate that generation two will be available right around the time they iron out said software! :p

I've been a technology obsessed weirdo since I was a child. There's been this weird normalization where suddenly the general public became more obsessed with tech like their phones than I was even though I was often laughed at for talking about how much I wanted devices like smart phones, but if we cycle back around to me being a weirdo again, I'll be equipped to cope :p

But I do agree, it looks kinda goofy that will be an issue for some people :p

I also want to see more details. For example, they didn't tout seamless screen sharing with people in the room with you, and I think that's critical for a device like this to pick up. I watch TV and movies with my wife and friends. Even when playing a SP game, it's nice to be able to share that experience with others. These AR systems need to make it very easy for someone to see the same screen as you to keep the social experience, otherwise I'll almost always choose a physical screen when that's a factor.

I think they're on the right road, but I'm not sure how close they are to the destination yet.

There are some things that seem like obvious changes Apple could make as per Marques Brownlee's review...

Drop the external OLED display. Using passthrough with a picture of your eyes on an external screen is not a replacement for taking off your headset to talk to somebody. Also, I get that Apple loves their premium materials, but they really should drop the glass and aluminum for the body of this thing. I get that it makes it feel premium, but it also makes everything unnecessarily heavy. Seems the only reason it has an external battery pack is because the device was so heavy thanks to the materials Apple chose. I also noticed the battery back didn't have a clip, so I guess it's supposed to just sit on the table or couch next to you. However, what happens when you stand up? I guess the answer is put it in your pocket, but I don't think that's such a great answer when half the population deals with clothes that often don't actually have pockets.

The tech sounds great, but this is a 2024 project and I do wonder how this will compare to a Meta Quest Pro 2 which will still be less than a third of the price.

Honestly, I was sort of expecting Apple to come up with something like a more sleek version of the HTC VIVE Flow. Maybe something that could actually do what Google was trying to do with Glass, but less dorky and I'm not sure this cuts it. I say that knowing full well I'll likely buy a Meta Quest 3 later this year, but that Quest 3 is also only going to be like $500.

Sounds like me.  I'm looking at this Apple headset through different eyes these days.  My "parent brain" has taken over some of my thinking. I'm picturing the parents who are glued to their phones constantly, letting their kid sit there and do whatever. Now the parents will sit there staring forward like a zombie with a big eye mask on.  What that will feel like for a young kid as they realize they get about half of mommy or daddy's attention.

I wonder how tiring the headset gets to be? You multitask the screen in front of your eyes, while also navigating the real world around you.  I imagine after a few hours you'll take the headset off and feel the hangover of sensory overload set in.

Or how tiring the headset looks like it could be.  As you multitask the screen in front of your eyes, while also navigating the real world around you.  Couple hours of that, take the headset off and feel the hangover of sensory overload set in.

Yeah I'm often annoyed with how often people are distracted by their phones. The people who spend a lot of time texting other people while they're out to lunch with others or something is crazy to me. These smart phones are tech I dreamed about as a kid, would get laughed at for dreaming about, and then it's the average joes who can't put it down and focus on their surroundings.

This could make that attitude worse. In which case the conclusion is the general public doesn't deserve technology :p

A little bit…

lmao for me it just wasn’t what I wanted exactly (was reallllly hoping it would have eye tracking, hdr, and oled, minimum) so I was hoping not to spend that much…but I remember what the default Q2 strap was like and I fucking hate dealing with storage and I have a decent library through the years but damn it added up.

If my Quest 2 wasn’t broke and there wasn’t an AC game coming I probably would have skipped it, but I am starting to get a bit excited at the improvements we do get and that color passthrough!

In this category of life, we are doomed to repeat our past mistakes my friend. I now just sigh and say, I’m your huckleberry under my breath, then click the order button…  :sun:

Im just going to have to eventually know how to better coax my initial impressions of tech reveals without saying “I won’t buy this!” so that I can stop embarrassing myself the next year when I buy it

Still trying to wait for Deckard news, but at this point it's a COPIUM meme. I'm still using the Index for a bit >_>

I also was hoping we would have heard any hint of this really happening for real real before Quest 3 came out :( Just one of those things I’ll believe it when I see it at this point.

I bought the Meta Quest II a few years ago and I know I won't buy another VR until its at least double the resolution and uses OLED because the lack of real blacks is a deal killer for VR.

Not being oled is such a bummer man. Having the psvr2 it really makes me appreciate what it brings to the table in VR so much. Especially a horror game like RE8 or Switchback, you just can’t really do that the same way on Quest. But then that headset isn’t wireless and doesn’t work on pc. But then Q3 also doesn’t have eye tracking. But psvr2 doesn’t have color passthrough or hand tracking. It’s annoying how you can’t really get one headset with all the current vr tech.

I would like a VR for watching movies but its not possible without real blacks because the side glow is just horrible. Like I'm already at the point where I only buy OLED monitors and TVs but the lack of real blacks in VR is magnified 10x. Anything that tries to be dark at all is just a big glowfest.

That and the screen door effect means I have no plans on buying VR until its 8K OLED.

For movies you definitely are better off with rokid/nreal right now yeah. OLED and just the clarity is miles better and the screen door effect doesn’t exist with it.
