It was indeed also marketed as that but the "official" title that stuck was simply Superman. On the wiki page for the film, for example, it's called Superman but it was "also marketed" as Superman: The Movie. So that's something. On IMDb, the 1978 Superman doesn't even get an "original title" where it will say: "Superman: The Movie" like some films will have (particularly foreign films) and there's also no "alternative title" listed either. Over time between the two marketed titles it seems Superman won vs. Superman: The Movie.

It officially called Superman The Movie... people later shortened that to simply Superman, but all you have to do is look at EVERY POSTER, DVD, VHS or BLURAY ever made for this now over 40 year old movie and you can see what the "official" title was. That's why they are simply calling THIS one "SUPERMAN". Because there has never been a major motion picture simply called Superman.

Just before the destruction of the planet Krypton, scientist Jor-El (Marlon Brando) sends his infant son Kal-El on a spaceship to Earth. As Superman, he battles the villainous Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), while, as novice...

The literally included it in the Title treatment.

I'm just cracking up at the idea that calling this movie "Superman" was somehow pissing on Christopher Reeve's grave.

Was calling the Deadpool movie "Deadpool" pissing on Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry because his last movie was called "The Dead Pool"?

No one is disputing what you're saying, just that in terms of how it's titled almost everywhere, the subtitle of "The Movie" isn't used. It's there but that isn't relevant to the public consciousness, which is what one would be worried about with overlapping titles. Also, it's a bit of a stretch to say this is why this one is simply titled Superman. I imagine James Gunn just didn't care, not that this was some heavily thought about aspect given how cavalier he was in interviews about how it was he who introduced the infinity stones broadly to the MCU (for example). Anyways, I don't care myself either way, the previous movie is so old it doesn't matter, call it Superman, but most people know the 1978 Superman movie as just Superman, not Superman: The Movie and just because a film was marketed a certain way with its title doesn't mean that's the official title the film takes on

It's in the same way that literally Fast & Furious 6's title on screen in the movie itself is "Furious 6", which is what Justin Lin wanted to officially name it but the movie's "official" title is "Fast & Furious 6" which is how it is listed pretty much anywhere online, which is what matters. On IMDb for instance, it is officially "Fast & Furious 6" with its "original title" listed underneath in small font (as per usual on IMDb), saying "Furious 6".

It's not even a couple of posters, it's just one, and that one poster is practically a bot anyway.
