marioandsonic
I don't blame them. It's the most thankless job in the world. 1
b_m_b_m_b_m
Wife left for better pay, less stress, and better hours all while working from home. I can’t blame others for doing the same
Mr.Vic20
Its what my wife does and what my daughter is going to school to do. Its truly a "noble" profession. Low pay, impossible expectations and generally a thankless environment.

I'm telling her to take a total year off and figure out what else she'd want to do (with an emphasis on less stress, maybe remote).
SmugPrick
I could make 40ka year working a register at Micky D's dealing with adult asshats (minus the college expense) or I can make 40k a year dealing with children asshats with 50k in debt. ill take the path of getting ahead faster financially over getting a 1/4 of the year off. even if I doordashed during the summer, the debt load would put me 10 years behind the Micky D's homie. Yeah, you could probably make $40k/year here in California working McDonald's (because cost of living is very high and no one wants to do this shit for a pittance), but uh... not many other places. Lol They're getting close in a lot of places if they're working 40 hours, we had a dunkin that was hiring at 19, granted teachers here are starting in the mid 50s probably even 60s now here though, been a few years since i've looked at their contract. Keyser_Soze
Starting wage at McDonald's is $16 an hour now.
PaladinSolo
A big problem is school support staff are now often paid less than those jobs, like aides, cleaners, maintenance staff, with the only ones paid better are transportation staff and thats only because of almost emergency pay raises being passed in recent years cause you're not getting someone with a CDL for less than 20 an hour even with benefits anymore. Now, invest in better food. I’d even pay more for it, instead of almost never buying it. That said, I can still go for a big mac once a year or so. A little spring cleaning for the intestines. Guest
The district where I live has a starting pay rate for new teachers of $61k a year. You want to know who is underpaid? It’s people like my friend Sabrina who is a “teacher’s aide” in a SPED classroom that makes $15k a year working the same schedule as the teacher she is in a room with all day. Brutal. Here they are called IAs (Instructional Assistants) are are paid so much worse than teachers and other staff. Not unionized, either. Such an important job, too, and they are the resource that always gets cut to save money.
5timechamp
Dont blame them.. when theyre underpaid, under abuse from their pupils, and now part of political narrative accusing them of being groomers etc etc.. I was tempted to head into that profession because there are many pupils who are worth it… but the building ingratitude is ridiculous

Absolutely brutal, and the lack of interest in these aid positions leaves teachers in a worse spot. Aide's out here in my kid's districts start around $20-25k depending on the school and grade level. Hey, that gets up to like $35k with zero benefits if you have your bachelor's. I'm sure that'll pay those student loans back. What? Massachusetts is one of the most expensive states to live in? Substitute teachers also get it awful. In my district, they get a nice $150 per diem. That's awesome. We have 185 days of school, so that's a sweet $27750 for a position where you need the same qualifications as an full-time teacher and you have to fill in for a teacher that's out a full year. Also, that's exactly what they've been doing for teachers that are out with long COVID or teachers who just quit. Bring in a sub to fill out the rest of the year as a full time teacher for the same paltry sum. First year, licensed teacher in my city gets $53 if they hit the minimum education requirement of a bachelor's. A master's bumps that first year salary up to $58k and a doctorate bumps it up to $69k. Doctorate with THIRTY-FIVE years of teaching experience gets a whole $114k. That's a lot of school and a lot of experience to make less than me and a lot of people around here. It just isn't worth it at any level unless you REALLY have a masochistic passion for it.
AbsolutSurgen
The average high school teacher in Ontario makes 85k-90k a year -- and is going on strike every few years to make more. (This is not the "high", this is the average.)
DarkStar189
My wife is friends with 3 of the elementary school teachers where my kids currently go. The stuff they tell us is frustrating and sad. Most of them are at the point they know this job isn’t going to be permanent like they originally planned and how great it’s going to be when they move on. A lot of kids clearly have bad lives at home. It takes a toll on the teachers mentally having to get wrapped up in that. One kid in my daughters class refused to sit at his desk for weeks. He would sit under the desk. One time while he was down there he had scissors and was quietly cutting holes in other kids pants. That caused an uproar when multiple kids went home and parents found out. Teacher had done everything they were allowed to do but the higher ups were dragging their feet putting the kids somewhere else. That’s just elementary school. I can’t imagine older kids. I grew up in the same school district. Finished high school 18 years ago in it. Fights were such a rare occurrence. Last year there was so many fights at my old high school we saw in an email how they are raising security and having more officers permanently in the school. People are leaving the medical field and nobody is going to want to be a teacher anymore. Our country is going to be fucked.

I know it's a how bad teachers have it post but I can't say the story leads me to conclude the system is failing these kids. The kid with the in the example clearly needs help but they'd rather just dump it on teachers. Sounds like teachers aides are needed but no one wants to pay for it as well. I'd almost go Fox Mulder and say this is on purpose but it might just be a fortunate accident. Fortunate due to producing workers smart enough to do their jobs but not really question why their lives feel as if it's getting worse. My daughter needs a therapist. She's getting a quarter of the prescribed hours she got from her neurologist, but so far this year that's cost me $3500 in medical bills. Literally just maxed out my copay in two months. I'm alone with these kids and luckily working from home and making barely enough to keep up with those therapy bills. I can't help but know that's certainly not the case for a lot of parents with kids that need help.
