It frustrates me knowing that Nintendo are sitting on both Zelda and Metroid Prime HD collections.

It’s the most confirmed, not confirmed rumour with Nintendo at the moment - but it feels wrong that these games are awaiting a suitable release date when they could have been in my hands. I could have been sat on a bus playing through all the Prime games, but no…


Or lay hungover on the sofa making my way through the Twilight Realm.

Not really, most corporations know that frustration means less money and people can turn elsewhere. Nintendo almost literally doesn't care whether they succeed or not. For every Wii and Switch we have an N64, a GameCube and a Wii U. For every (theoretical good online feature here) we have a friend code system or shoddy online bullshit.

it happens in movies and tv too. Creators make something they want and audiences go crazy for it. Then you have studios trying to follow the trends and “what fans like” and it fails miserably. 
 

it’s the difference between telling a story that creates fans and leaning too heavily on fan service to tell a story. It’s the difference between a passion project and a paint by numbers cash grab. The difference between creating trends and chasing them. 
 

Nintendo doesn’t care what we think, because they don’t have to. They end up being validated more often than not. Sony and MS wish they could not care as much as Nintendo can.

Yeah, and they fail a lot too. That's what I literally just fuckin' typed. The Wii U, Gamecube and N64 were not "succeeding a lot," hell, the 3DS launched in a disastrous state they were lucky to come back from.

 

The console right before the one we have now failed miserably. That's Nintendo. Big ups, big downs.

My Switch library is so small, I feel like the games that hit the high bar of quality I know Nintendo can occasionally deliver on shrinks every gen.


I definitely like to try a lot of weird shitty games, but not from Nintendo. I have expectations of them, I don't have expectations of Jimmy Sisterfucker making a game in his basement and selling it for $2.99.

There’s a lot more Nintendo games I’d play and enjoy if they dropped in price as they should at this point.  The Switch hasn’t been as exciting for me as many of their past consoles, perhaps for that reason.

 

It doesn’t help that their Mario Sports games since Aces have been half baked.  Mario Party sounds equally underwhelming when it was prime for a comeback.  Smash Ultimate input lag was a killjoy for me.  And with online subscription fees now, I don’t think I’m interested in Splatoon anymore.

 

On the positive, we got Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, 3D Kirby that works, and a stellar slate of Xenoblade games.  Animal Crossing, Luigi’s Mansion and Fire Emblem all got strong entries.  And two Mario+Rabbids games that were better than they had any right to be, maybe even moreso as a Ubisoft colab. BoTW is also great in spite of being a different flavor, but I’d sooner count the sequel as a genuine Switch title.

This is way too reductive though.  They’ve been at least a strong second place in their 1st party output the last decade.

 

Truth be told, the quality of their games hasn’t changed much since the GameCube era.  Except for Mario and Zelda, which have been on the up ever since. :p

My original point stands.  None of these corporations give a flying fuck about you, they care about profits and nothing else.  Microsoft was about to release an online only console and told everyone who wasn’t happy about it to kiss their ass and buy a 360.  Sony could make the PS5 backwards compatible or let you cloud stream your online PSN purchases without some barely understandable subscription service, but they don’t.  None of them give a single shit if you’re happy or not, they are coming up with the best way to extract more money out of you.  Every one of them has turned the screws on you the moment they think they have the leverage, Nintendo at least has the common decency to make eye contact with you while they fuck you.

That was back 6 years ago and I fell for the gimmick. I had a ton of disposable cash in that time, too. I don't even know if I'll play the new Zelda this year.

Go play the Xenoblade games.  You have an excellent remaster of the first game on the system to start with.

 

Probably shouldn’t be complaining if you haven’t at least given them a shot.  Monolith Soft is Nintendo’s Insomniac Games, in terms of how they support the system and how well they know the hardware.  Their output has been bonkers lately.

Torna's combat is still the best, but only marginally so.  XB3's main gameplay flaw is that chain attacks are boring.  Optional, but boring.  I feel like they need to bring back the risk/reward of the first game, where using chain attacks drained your party revival meter.  XB3 makes it more of a get out of jail free card.

 

Great game in any case.  If XB3's is expansion as much of an improvement as Torna was to XB2, I'm going to be very happy.
