Clerks 3 Trailer

Recommended Posts

I was a big Kevin Smith fan, and I am a big View Askewneverse fan, but Smith simply hasn't made anything good since Red State and Tusk (for me). Once Johnny Depp's character shows up in Tusk, Smith's entire talent seems to have left him (Tusk, I would argue, was quite good up to that point). Like am I getting good Kevin Smith or am I getting Jersey Girl, Cop Out, Yoga Hosers, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Kevin Smith? And I know most didn't like Red State or Tusk either.

I will say Clerks II was pretty good (not as good as Clerks but I didn't expect it to be) so hopefully Clerks III maintains the quality. I really enjoyed Zack and Miri Make A Porno as well, shit was super funny to me.

I think Red State is the last Smith flick I’ve seen. None of the trailers for any of his subsequent movies made me think it is worth watching.

I like Clerks and Clerks 2. I like Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back. But I didn't seen the new Jay and Silent Bob cuz it seemed kinda cringe. This seems far less cringe and more like Clerks 2, but I'm also tired of nostalgia bait that offers nothing but nostalgia and that could be Clerks 3. The trailer certainly pushes that which is not a good thing.

And I loved clerks 2. Like, I know it wasn't for everyone, but because of my Dad, I saw it in theaters 3 times and many more times on DvD. Haven't seen it in fucking years tho. Like 10+ years.

This might be a hot take but I actually think the second was better than the first.

I...kind of agree? I love Clerks but somehow Clerks II nailed some sort of sweet spot for me. I really like that movie and that scene where they go to the go kart track hits me every time. It's very sweet in a not corny way and that's hard to do. I also think Rosario Dawson is great in it.

One of those movies that blew my mind with how much better it was than it seemed to have any right to be. Just for that reason, I'll give III a chance despite not getting much from the trailer.

Clerks and Clerks II are a couple of my favorite comedies, but the trailer for Clerks III isn’t really doing it for me for some reason. It all looks a bit forced. Outside of the first two Clerks movies, the other Kevin Smith movies that I’ve seen (Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) are kind of mixed bags IMO. I think that I like Zack and Miri Make a Porno the most out of them. I haven’t seen Cop Out, Red State, Tusk, Yoga Hosers, or Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. Are any of those worth a watch?

I think Red State and Tusk are worth watching for a very different Smith who is really trying to evolve his storytelling and directorial abilities, and largely succeeds. Red State is some dark, damning stuff at times with an excellent final punchline to end the movie, and Tusk is some weird body horror shit for half it's runtime with wonderful one takes of emotional moments in both movies. General audiences and critics didn't like either movie, but I was impressed by Smith's skill and growth. I wouldn't bother with Yoga Hosers or Reboot.

I hate to say it because I love the guy and he's a fellow Jerseyan but Kevin Smith is no auteur. I does FAR better directing TV than films. Zack and Miri was ok but that was mostly due to the cast. He's a great host and every fanboy's dream, but yeah...

Nobody ever claimed he was though.

But sometimes, movies are just fun and nostalgic, and thats ok.

Kevin Smith makes Kevin Smith movies. Most of us who are fans grew up with smith, and enjoy revisiting these characters. Im not sure the "Smith isn't a great director" takes matter, because I don't think anyone ever believed otherwise, Kevin included. But every time theres a Smith movie, theres a bunch of people reminding fans that his movies are bad and we shouldn't like them.

Red State is a good movie, I really enjoy it, and Reboot is fun if you're interested in the Viewaskewaverse.

Confused Liam Neeson GIF

I seriously have no better answer than nostalgia and weirdly enough I can't think of any other film series where I'm cool with that. Usually I'd rip the shit out of something like this lol

I kind of just want to hear Randal and Dante talk shit to each other, have a bro love moment and I'm good.

I find the idea that every piece of art requires a reason to be a bit odd.

Kevin had a heart attack, and realized that he had something he wanted to say about it inside of this ridiculous world he created, with these crazy characters many of us love from our formative years.

Why does it need to be more than that?

He's not preventing anyone else from creating their art. He isn't forcing anyone to watch. He likes to make weird movies  and has earned a lot of love and goodwill with a small, dedicated fanbase which has been able to support it.

I don't know if you've seen Red State and Tusk, but Smith's direction is leagues better than a lot of other directors in those (until Johnny Depp shows up in Tusk). He has these beautiful one takes in both movies, some extremely unsettling scenes and beautifully directed monologues. There's one pull out shot of Haley Joel Osment's friend crying from a mirror that pulls out from her face as she talks and cries and reveals herself until the camera moves into the next room backwards to reveal who is listening to her. Red State's act structure is bold and exciting, reminding me of a Coen Brothers movie where new main characters took over and you had sudden deaths of other main characters.

There's another scene in Tusk that is just a held two shot of Justin Long's and Michael Park's characters as Long interviews him and it's incredibly tense and unsettling. It shocks me over and over how these two movies didn't elevate Smith's directorial talents. He even uses darker color pallets, not his typical overly brightly lit and shot comedies. Both movies are worth a reassessment I think.

This is me just completely making shit up, but I had the sense that he really put a lot of effort into those movies (Red State and Tusk), really challenged himself to do something different. But then when they weren’t critically or commercially successful, he decided that level of effort just wasn’t worth it when he can just have fun with his friends making something dumb.

Lol, tusk came out of a twitter poll based on a joke from one of his podcasts.

Red State was definitely him doing something different. I think he did a good job with it, and got shit on because of his antics at that time (auctioning to himself, bitching at press). Pot pretty much changed him I think, mellowed him out a ton and made him just want to be kevin smith.

I absolutely agree with this. The dip from those two movies in terms of effort to Yoga Hosers and Reboot was very surprising to me. I think you're right as to why.

Technically, it is pretty bold to make a movie from a twitter poll based on a joke from a podcast. :p Either way Tusk was very different, like I said, people should give it another watch, particularly the first half and everything not including Johnny Depp's character who is irritating as fuck. It is very well directed and shot. The seal shit did have me aghast but also kind of like wtf at the same time, all in a good way. There are few movies like Tusk, for good or ill.

I think if a person goes from Cop Out, then Red State, then Tusk, then Yoga Hosers, then Reboot, the contrast is so stark in improvement and then back down that it must be due to the critical and commercial reaction to those two films. Red State is more on point in real life than ever, and Tusk's weird body horror predates recent films like Possessor, Crimes of the Future, and Titane, etc. (came out ahead of what has clearly become a trend if you add in Swallow,  Raw, etc. as well) and is actually a dark movie but also darkly funny as well.

Kevin Smith is an odd duck.  I’ve seen him in person doing his appearances and run into him randomly on Red Bank at his comic shop.  There’s no real denying that the man is a natural storyteller, he can take a normal experience that someone could tell in a few minutes into an entertaining hour long yarn.

That said, I don’t think he’s a very good screenwriter or director.  Not horrible, but not much better than above average.  I don’t think that it’s a coincidence that his best scripts focus mostly on retelling the mundane and things that he clearly experienced to some extent himself.
