I'm one of the few that thought the first 2/3's of Spectre were an incredible Le Carre-type spy movie and then the movie shits the bed when Bond gets back to London at the end. So I'm excited for a follow up with Craig but it'll all depend on the director. I was excited for Boyle. Almost a teen slasher flick with the protagonists being picked off one-by-one as their plan falls apart, and the desperate attempts by the ringleader to survive long enough to pull off taking over the world. When he's on, he does excellent work like GoldenEye, Casino Royale, The Mask of Zorro, and arguably Edge of Darkness and The Foreigner. But he can also be absolute trash; see: No Escape, Vertical Limit, Beyond Borders, The Legend of Zorro, and Green Lantern. So it all depends with journeyman directors like him. As long as the Broccolis are so opinionated in the making of these films, I don't think we'll see anyone with too much style take the reins on a Bond film. I'd love to see a Bond movie where Nolan had complete creative control. Edgar Wright would be a great choice, though I'd like to see him get a new lead. Make Bond fun and campy again. More Marvel than DC. Again, that would probably only work if he had real control over the project, otherwise we'd end up in another Ant-Man situation. I'm a big fan of the way he handles an impending threat in his films, and then pays them off with a sharp sequence. Monsters was a creative low-budget thrill, Godzilla had a genuine sense of foreboding, and Rogue One gave Vader the sort of mythos you would expect the Rebels to hold him up to. He knows that your imagination fills in scarier gaps with subtle clues versus showing everything. I think those skills applied to Bond as the "monster", plus the fact Edwards can clearly get fresh work done in a studio driven environment, would make him a good fit for 007. I think that's a bit of an exaggeration - Casino Royale is very much a Martin Campbell film, Quantum of Solace is very much a Marc Forster film, and Skyfall and Spectre are very much Sam Mendes films (except for the last part of Spectre - what the fuck was that?). All of them have clear trademarks of their directors - I'd argue with the same scripts those movies would not come out the way they did except for having these specific directors at the helm (visually, etc.). Hell, Campbell might be a journeyman director, but Marc Forster and Sam Mendes have clear directorial styles and talent. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
