Merry 20th Birthday, Max Payne!

Recommended Posts

I've made no secret of my adoration for both Max Payne titles.  Even though the gameplay of Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is unquestionably better than its predecessor, I consider the duology to be a "total package" and the first game will hold a special place in my heart as the first game I installed and played on my first-ever PC build in the summer of 2001!  A few articles from around the web celebrating Max's 20th birthday:

The original Max Payne game, the first bullet time superstar, came out 20 years ago today! Happy birthday, Max!

Max Payne will celebrate its 20th anniversary next month. Going back to it now, particularly in light of its sequels and legacy, feels like picking up a piece of the industry preserved in amber. There is a strange brew of youthful naivety and borderline sociopathy in a narrative replete with tropes and clichés, while the gameplay trades on the cultural zeitgeist established by The Matrix two years earlier. And yet it remains one of the most impressive...

Remedy's slow-motion shooter is still worth playing today.

And a special message from Remedy:

Never played this series. Literally never even played a single second of a Max Payne game. Pretty sure this was the only game my parents wouldn't let me play despite letting me play GTA3, VC, and SA which were all around the same time.

My friend bought me Max Payne on PC for my 13th birthday.  I still have the original disc.  I remember being unsure if my computer would run it, but it did and I was absolutely blown away.  Max Payne 2 remains one of my favorite games ever, and I still replay it occasionally on the original Xbox.

Max Payne 3 was one of the biggest gaming disappointments I've ever experienced.

GD it. Why can't remedy make a MP3 and we just ignore the other game. =/ Both of the original games were fantastic and I found 2 to be such perfection after 1 (played both on PC back in the day).

Man gonna have to rummage through my digital collection, pretty sure I own a copy of both on one of the digital stores.

Max Paybe was a really important game for me too. Well, both 1 and 2. It always reminded me of The Crow (the movie). That level in the nightclub with the speeded-out boss screaming about fallen angels was cool as fuck.

FYI the bundle for both is on sale on Steam for $4.49. Apparently needs a patch but everyone in the reviews section says which. Might get this right now.

Also fuck the third game. The gameplay was awesome but first of all it let you play five seconds at a time between the bullshit cutscenes and worse, it had minus zero atmosphere and who gives a shit about Max Payne: Tropical Edition

I remember playing the pitch black follow the red line part with my friend on his xbox and it was scarrrrry.

Didn't that part have a baby crying in the background? I remember getting stuck on that level for a few minutes too long because it was a maze. It was very grating on the ears.
